    I recently had a chance to deliver an "elevator talk" on ham radio, and was looking for a video that would sum things up in a nutshell for someone who expressed interest. Nice job, Josh, and good to see the ARRL taking advantage of your presentation skills! 73 de N2PEZ

    Excellent video. I have a few acquaintances in the prepper community that, while they use radio, are not licensed but are thinking about taking the Tech test. This will go a long way to talking them into getting licensed. Thanks for what you do. Hoorah Bro --KD0FKI

    The hard part in the beginning is getting the funds to start the hobby. Getting your first HF transceiver. Years ago I was able to use my tax return to buy a used Elecraft built in 99.

    Something that needs to be said is the cost of equipment. That Icom shown in the early part of this conversation goes for three thousand dollars. By scanning around your shack, I would guess there's in excess of 20,000 dollars of equipment - including the parts that aren't showing: the antennas. You CAN start with small money, but the fact of the matter is that it's an expensive pass time....

    • @robertfwagnerjr9480
      @robertfwagnerjr9480 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I got started for less than $50 with a Baofeng UV5R on a local repeater. Local network every Saturday morning at 9 am. Joined the local ham club that puts on the network for $15.

    • @robertfwagnerjr9480
      @robertfwagnerjr9480 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think a Xiegu G90 is $500 to get on the HF bands. It has a built in antenna tuner.

    • @robertfwagnerjr9480
      @robertfwagnerjr9480 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My HF antenna was and still is a 29 foot piece of copper wire, say $3.

    Just who is the audience for this video? I love when we hams use "commercial off-the-shelf" equipment, we get a pan of a Ham Radio Outlet? Which is a niche store...
    I was half-expecting you to go into a WalMart and MacGyver yourself a Part 97 radio... so far as I know FRS has retail market supremacy.

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you're saying the radios we buy at HRO are not commercial off the shelf?

    • @kc0itf
      @kc0itf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HamRadioCrashCourse Again? Who's the audience? We hams go to HRO among others, what about the lay person?
      Can you go to WalMart and buy a Part 97 radio or not???

    A "service" for which we are not allowed to make money or advance our business interests, but the Feds CHARGE US for volunteering to perform...welcome to the USSR, A...USSA

    • @dougearnest7590
      @dougearnest7590 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you discussed this with your Congressman or someone from his or her office? Personally I don't think a lot of people see it as a lot of money, but if it's important to you then drum up some support from like minded people and make something happen. That's something we do in the USA, as opposed to the USSR.
      In addition, even if you can't get anywhere with the Feds, what about tackling the issue on the state level? Granted, the state can't override the FCC, but you might still get some sort of recognition in the form of -- maybe eliminating sales tax on HAM equipment? Or a break in your state income tax if you have one? I'm sure you or others could think of additional incentives to balance out what the Feds charge you for volunteering.
      Let me know what you come up with. As someone interested in advocacy on the state level I'd love to hear more ideas.
