    I'm surprised that Carrie wasn't on the list. I think it conveys the feelings of teenage quite accurately. However, the first King book I read was Salem's Lot.

    • @DaveReadsKing
      @DaveReadsKing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did consider it, for sure, and it works perfectly well as an entry point - I guess I was aiming more for ones that are ‘so good you have to go and grab another right away’ level of good, and Carrie probably doesn’t quite fit that bill for me

    I guess your place titles(?) were good because I was able to guess almost all of them, based on your clue. I also imagine there will be a lot of people chipping in their two cents for "What about...?" It would be easier for me to warn people away from particular books, or if King is their Thing then suggest saving certain ones for last. Desperation and The Regulators usually hold the worst place, but I greedily consume anything he writes including Fairy Tale, his newest. At the top of the charts, for me, are his short story collections and novellas (with the exception of Four Past Midnight. I still read it three times, but it is the weakest.) Night Shift, Skeleton Crew, Everythings Eventual, If it Bleeds, After Sunset, Nightmares and Dreamscapes are sure bets. The novellas and work as Bachman is also really good, but more homerun and strike out. Under the Dome and Dreamcatcher are a little radioactive in my opinion because they deal with aliens or vague inscrutable antagonists. Another reason to delve into the b9oks, and short story collections in particular, is many are likely to be made into series and films because of King's congenial wish to let anyone have the right to adapt his work into other media. That is a pretty rare privilege and uncommonly generous gesture. Great video, sir.

    I started reading IT after IT chapter 2 was released in theaters. But I never finished the book. I had a hard time getting into the book and I think it was because I saw the films for IT before I started the book. My first King book I completed was Pet Sematary. Then I just finished FireStarter. Now I’m currently reading 11/22/63. I own the books; IT, Pet Sematary, 11/22/63, The Shinning, Misery, Carrie, Cujo, FireStarter, and The Stand. I have a question for you. I recently started a project of reading King's fictional works in as close to chronological order as I can manage. I will soon be to the point at which the first volume of the Dark Tower series will be next on the list. However, a lot of other works were written between the publication of the individual Dark Tower volumes. With multi-volume series, I prefer to read them straight through. Would you say that continuing to read King's books in chronological order of publication will work for the Dark Tower series? Or would it be better to read that entire series as one giant book? If I do read it as one giant book, should I knock it out now or later? Or read the Dark Tower series after completing everything else? Thoughts? Suggestions?

    • @DaveReadsKing
      @DaveReadsKing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, it’s a good question - I’ve done both routes and enjoyed them immensely. Reading them in publication order definitely works, it just depends if you’re happy with the big gaps between some of the books. I actually found the gaps made me appreciate the tower books more when I came back to them. Also, you might be interested in my guide to the Dark Tower: th-cam.com/video/4pmxpfPfzOw/w-d-xo.html

    You want real horror? Take Pet Sematory - real gruesome and a good book.
    You don't want fantasy and horror? Different Seasons! Two great and tow good novellas. Good literature.
    Something new? Take Billy Summers. Just take it. Wonderful book.
    Something epic! Needful Things. The story of a microccosm and King destroys it. No one can do it better.

      The go-to one would be The Eyes of the Dragon, and I'd also throw in The Body too. After that, it depends on how much that young person can deal with, scariness-wise...The Institute has plenty of YA vibes, as does Gwendy's Button Box, and maybe The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. If they want darker, then Christine, Carrie and night Shift are all fun but quite bloody. And, of course, there's IT - the kids in that one are all around 12, but it is also very scary! Depends how much they can take!

      In my opinion, From a Buick 8 is good and very underrated, while Lisey's Story is fantastic

    Christine is great but such a odd change up in perspective from the first half to the second half of the book. The movie is so bad though!

    I prefer reading what pretentious people call "High Literature" currently reading Over Heroes and Tombs by Ernesto Sabato, but I will give Stephen King a chance. Planning on starting with The Shining. I'll be reporting my thoughts around here, even if no one cares! See ya!

    Where to start reading Stephen King? Seriously this is a thing? Pet Sematery is actually a dark comedy.

    • @DaveReadsKing
      @DaveReadsKing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I...I don't understand the point of your comment. Yes, people wanting recommendations of where to jump into the bibliography of an author with more than 70 published works in a range of styles and genres is definitely a thing. As for Pet Sematary being a dark comedy, I disagree - I think it's an exploration of death and grief. Needful Things is a dark comedy, a satire of the greed of the 80s, but not that cursed burial ground.
