Lifting scientifically has changed everything for me. And, contrary to prevailing sentiment, it has sucked precisely 0 fun out of lifting, as far as I'm concerned.
Really a personality thing, for some, optimizing what you do and learning about *why* and *how* things are scientifically optimal or not is a boring chore, and for others it’s a passion and lights up their brain in a good way. That’s what really got me into training consistently as well is that instead of it being purely physical busywork, it’s something that challenges my mind and intrigues me to learn which keeps me coming back for more
I actually think it's more fun with the slow and controlled. The results are unquestionable and getting that super focused pump where you actually want it is the best.
Really slowing down to focus on full rom and intensity has helped me a ton. I also watched a Jeff tricep tier list video and decided to try out overhead trice cable extensions, loving them.
While that is funny, that sport doesn't teach striking making that kind of wrestling more of a supplement to actual martial arts, not making it the central focus. It should be a supplement. I'd suggest PMA and Muay Thai 😏

I've definitely noticed myself getting stronger, but what I've really noticed is that I'm getting injured much less often. I've struggled with tendonitis in my shoulder for years and I'm 40. Following RP has changed the game for me and I feel stronger, more flexible, and more durable. Thanks, guys! Keep it up.
When Jeff gets close to failure he fidgets with he legs a bit, repositions them, just shakes out stress out of them. It makes me very happy that I am not the only one doing that. Jeff's the man.
Yes! I was struggling with 25s dropped to 20s and still was only getting 6 to 8 reps. Definitely makes me feel better about it. Might even try it with 15s. I normally curl with anywhere from 25 to 35 depending on the exercise
This video made me rethink the weights that I've been using, only issue was I had reached the 25-30 rep range and my workouts were taking way too long to finish.
The difference is he's failing with 15lbs with the best form for hypertrophy which he can muster. He could easily throw that weight around and do more reps if he was focusing on strength. Most people who claim they're doing 25's or something are most likely on steroids for a while, or they've got very bad technique in regards to muscle growth. If all they want is strength, then all power to them. But they can't complain their muscles aren't growing.

Jeff's point about there existing a point where muscular fatigue just physically won't let you do another rep is correct in theory. But in practice I've seen soldiers break through plateus in selection that seemed completely impossible. You're just never going to replicate the stress response in the gym that you get from true desperation. To give one example, day one of selection there was a cut off: if you can't do 30 pushups (with full gear) you're out. This was completely rested and most did it comfortably, but this one guy barely sqeeked out the last one. Like we're talking the last rep took like 15 seconds. Then just three days later, after pretty much no sleep, no food and constant physical badgering for the entire time the sargeant drops this bomb: same test, anyone under 50 is out. With the accumulated fatigue there was not a single one of us who wasn't terrified that they would fail out. It just seemed impossible. But the kicker was this time we had 3 instructors literally screaming at us for the entire time to push through. Every single one of us passed. And I'll never forget seeing the guy who just a few days earlier completely rested had barely done 30, now completely covered in mud and shivering from the cold fucking powering through to 50 and somehow a lot more convincingly. And mind you, this was still not a real fight or flight response from a do or die situation. Would love Dr. Mikes critique on my current workout split as an intermediate lifter. I’ve tried a bunch of splits but I actually like this the best so far. Mon: Chest, Back Tues: Legs Wed: Longer cardio Thurs: Chest, Back Fri: Legs Sat: Bi, Tri, Shoulders Sun: Rest
Doesn’t mean you should just turn a blind eye if you’re able to help. Everything dies eventually does that mean we shouldn’t try to stay alive, shouldn’t try to find cures, doctors should stop helping people? You see someone getting abused, kidnapped, beat, or raped and you should just walk away from it because it happens everyday? It could be your kid, mom, dad, close friend, wife, husband, etc and you wouldn’t want someone to step in if they could? There are so many things wrong with this logic. You’re either lying to yourself or have some form of psychological disorder.
I'm doing the same sort of case study. I've been bodybuilding training for over 15 years. Hired a bodybuilding coach this year and told him I want to compete on stage naturally. So far, I'm up 7lbs of muscle since January this year. The training intensity is crazy high to reach the growth stimulus. You can see it in Jeff's face in this video... that intensity gets real, real fast.
After a few years of bodybuilding, there are still things I'm learning of course, but it's so reassuring to have the validation of certain training choices. Like integrating the arms into the chest/back equivalent and changing the order according to priorities. Beyond personal satisfaction, it shows that the pedagogy of (real) gymtubers works, and that the message is received.
@@TheCitizenPain True, smaller/shorter muscles. But I swear the dude’s shoulders have gotten so much wider in the last six months, he looks like he’s doubled in size.
@@TheCitizenPain Half right. Shorter dudes look good in solo pics and all but they get mogged by taller dudes even if they don't lift. Also, taller dudes have more potential. This is why most Mr. O's are NOT 5'5.
I don't understand why he still wants to bulk, that's already a nice body, a bigger muscle on his body would look a bit weird with his height. If he's taller with proportional muscle, he'd look bigger than Jared.
I totally understand where Jeff is coming from on the matter of reps in reserve but I agree with Mike, the mental drive you have can definitely push you further than what you're normally capable of.
@@Vincent_Beers At the same time, it's a bit like dialing back on safety measures. In the gym setting, agressive encouragement can probably eke out a bit more and not be a problem. The guy heroically lifting a car in an adrenaline rush is going to hurt BAD once it wears off. Your body doesn't want to let you do that for a reason, life and death is the exception.
I'm just quite surprised someone as experienced as Jeff would find the point so controversial. If someone stabs you in the leg and screams they'll end you, the adrenaline from the pain and fear will obviously do a number on you and give you added strength and endurance. Or does he doubt this is true? I haven't been in that spot, but I would be surprised if it weren't true.
Of course its harder for Jeff cause he doesn't train that way, I bet if he implemented this style his body would get used to it, kinda like working out for the first time again haha
I really liked this video and honestly I wish RP uploaded more energizing video like this, like at least twice a week.. but may be that is why they have a members section
Came back from a cold with this workout. Loved it Joints never hurt and didn’t tax the nervous system. Arms pumped up like a wacky inflatable man!! Thanks guys
The amount of strength and jackedness in that gym that day, with Jeff, Jared, and Dr. Mike, then Milo killing it in the background. Also, this looks like one HELL of a good time. Absolute cooker of a workout. I love the "We got 'im again, Scott." during the upright rows.
Getting there at the first half of your session is something worthy but getting there towards the end…. That’s where you gotta find that Super Saiyan in you
Death metal definitely helps to achieve SSJG while training, for me it’s the moments when your bestfriend betrayed me or the love of your life tells you it’s forever and leaves you or when your dad died. You whole life shatters and crumbles before your eyes. These things are great motivators to shatter the ceiling and destroy the whole fucking building.
Nah the drug response from the body is very real. I've trained to failure hundreds of times and beyond many. With adrenaline in my system I could have done more reps, but if you also put me under immense stress and anxiety with my life on the line in a dangerous environment I think I would either just match the reps that I did on adrenaline or maybe crap out earlier due to the immense stress. Either way, your muscles will run out of resources regardless of mentality and determination. The drugs released by the body are what makes it possible, not the mentality. It is just PEDs making you more capable. You can reach a state of mind that makes you want to train insanely hard just for fun, you will be crazy tired after though.
It’s mildly disconcerting that you can’t really tell if he’s joking about the dead children and dinged cars. I mean yes he’s joking…but is he really joking…
I'm reminded of the movie dodgeball. The scene where the dude is paying the kid to clean his truck over and over again. "Get in there all nice and deep like" dr Mike's comments took me right there. Lol
That was great. Love Jeff. Great workout. Jeff’s enthusiasm in the face of pain was awesome. And the Jordan Peterson impressions were a great bonus. Good work guys.
Especially that conversation from like 4:09 onwards. Kinda blew me away that Jeff was making that argument, as if he's trying to prove the point Eric's been making all along when criticising pencil neckery/being too caught up in the science. IT'S ABOUT THE MINDSET!
Just did the curls laying down. That was gnarly and something I had never heard or seen before. Excited to put them in the routine. A killer pump indeed.
Tricep muscles act as stabilizers, primarily for the shoulders, during pull ups and rows. They are involved during lowering (eccentric) portion of the pull up and row and they also flex your elbow. You will feel more of the long head with wide grip pull ups.
How do y'all not know this? The long head performs shoulder extension. Sure it's not working maximally but it is noticeably working and if you did absolutely nothing else for triceps but pullups you would still have significant long head development (albeit far from your potential). You can increase the stress on the lats and long head a bit by pulling yourself behind the bar rather than going straight up. If you really want to prove it to yourself, do lying pullovers. Even without your elbow moving, and in any elbow position, it czn be a great long head exercise.
@@gracefool This is like saying squats work the hamstrings and you'll get significant hamstring development if you only do squats because the hamstrings perform hip extension
@Karsius1 no, with squats the hamstring has minimal tension at every point because as the hip extends the knee also extends and the hamstring stays the same length. Whereas with pullups the long head significantly helps the beginning of the pull where the lats and biceps are in their weakest (fully stretched) position.
Yes, he said it as an argument to back up the claim that direct long head work is overrated. Yes, it's a ridiculous take. Mike can be wrong. No need to defend it.
@@Swanson-hs5df yeah I've definitely never had sore triceps organa pump in my triceps from doing back work. Mike has actually been wrong on a lot of things
I feel like their debate was slightly tense since Dr Mike pushed the you’re not training hard button (jokingly ofc) and Jeff had to deal with that for years 😭
Yeah and Mike was full of shit there. It's not very difficult to train triceps or biceps to real failure. Sometimes it seems Mike is just looking to disagree and argue for it's own sake when he is coaching.

Was looking for this comment 😂
Great to see everyone just working together even if they don't agree about every little thing. Good stuff
Would love Dr. Mikes critique on my current workout split as an intermediate lifter. I’ve tried a bunch of splits but I actually like this the best so far.
Mon: Chest, Back
Tues: Legs
Wed: Longer cardio
Thurs: Chest, Back
Fri: Legs
Sat: Bi, Tri, Shoulders
Sun: Rest
I love how you guys can collaborate. This is incredible
Kids die every day, Jeff... quote of the day!
Yeah, that was dark. Said as if it was just in passing.
Awesome vid, love the energy. Jeff is the man and Mike just consistently cracks me tf up 😂❤
After a few years of bodybuilding, there are still things I'm learning of course, but it's so reassuring to have the validation of certain training choices. Like integrating the arms into the chest/back equivalent and changing the order according to priorities.
Beyond personal satisfaction, it shows that the pedagogy of (real) gymtubers works, and that the message is received.
Jeff looking extra buff, dude is pushing the boundaries of what natural physique can look like
His height helps. Short kings generally can look buffer than tall dudes.
@@himeshsinghshishodiya total bullshit. The majority of Mr. O winners have been under average height.
Yea prob true but i would assume the massive fatigue is not good for gains
Of course its harder for Jeff cause he doesn't train that way, I bet if he implemented this style his body would get used to it, kinda like working out for the first time again haha
I really liked this video and honestly I wish RP uploaded more energizing video like this, like at least twice a week.. but may be that is why they have a members section
Came back from a cold with this workout. Loved it
Joints never hurt and didn’t tax the nervous system.
I love that this a conversation between people, like the arms day conversation. Great video.
Jeff just seems like the absolute nicest guy ever.
Jeff is more nicer than last time
Yeh on camera
@@ItzGamerYt9565 🤣🤣🤣🤣
💯
Facts 🙌🏻
I already know it’s a w video and I haven’t even watched it yet. Two of my favorite exercise scientists in the same video.
It's really cool to see how so small weights used proper targeting the bicep and tricep gives huge results. Love this workout!
That work out was outstanding. That last bit by Jeff talking about being a guinea pig for science was da bomb baby!
Mike, Jared, AND Jeff in one video? I just got a forearm PR!
The physiological aspect Mike talked about is very real. Not many people can get to that place
Getting there at the first half of your session is something worthy but getting there towards the end…. That’s where you gotta find that Super Saiyan in you
That’s why I listen to deathmetal/deathcore it summons inner demons to get me through
Death metal definitely helps to achieve SSJG while training, for me it’s the moments when your bestfriend betrayed me or the love of your life tells you it’s forever and leaves you or when your dad died. You whole life shatters and crumbles before your eyes. These things are great motivators to shatter the ceiling and destroy the whole fucking building.
@@Ssjgnolan If you have to think of your dad dying to go to failure on a set of tricep extensions, you just don't know how to train.
Dr and Jeff again, let's gooo
I fucken LOVE Dr Mike!! You're sense of humor is the best 👌
He’s so funny but such a troll. He’s like a trickster character from mythology
It’s mildly disconcerting that you can’t really tell if he’s joking about the dead children and dinged cars. I mean yes he’s joking…but is he really joking…
12:05 jeff breaks character 😂 got to be one of my fav collabs yet!
Jeff: “That’s the Jeff Nippard way”
Dr. Mike: “Cool”
Hahaha
4:09 Greg is going to have a field day with this
😂😂😂
please do this for every major muscle group.
Jeff is always a welcome addition on the RP channel
Favorite video so far 💯
I'm reminded of the movie dodgeball. The scene where the dude is paying the kid to clean his truck over and over again. "Get in there all nice and deep like" dr Mike's comments took me right there. Lol
10:10 This is the rythm of the night
The rhythm of the mike* ;)
Is it the reeboks or the nikes? 👀
Why does Jared Feathers hair make me feel genetically inferior in my nether regions
It's because the girth of his hair is unmatched...
I just tried triceps exercise 2 and it is BRUTAL! Thanks for sharing this awesome content
That was great. Love Jeff. Great workout. Jeff’s enthusiasm in the face of pain was awesome. And the Jordan Peterson impressions were a great bonus. Good work guys.
I love the passion of Jeff's beliefs 5:30
eric buganhagen going to be stuck in an infinitely long rant when he sees this
I would pay good money to see them get Eric in for a workout. He'd be yelling about pencil neck weight while doing 225 lb skull crushers lmao
Especially that conversation from like 4:09 onwards. Kinda blew me away that Jeff was making that argument, as if he's trying to prove the point Eric's been making all along when criticising pencil neckery/being too caught up in the science. IT'S ABOUT THE MINDSET!
the split screen of jeff lifting with dr mike staring me in the soul is so sexy
Just did the curls laying down. That was gnarly and something I had never heard or seen before. Excited to put them in the routine. A killer pump indeed.
Always good to see Jeff collaborating
6:47 Jared, when will you do a tutorial for johnson gains? That second left leg is crazy.
1:20 Pullups and rows hit the long head of the triceps? I think your tripping mike
I heard this and thought it might be the most curious (and possibly one of the only wrong) things he's ever said.
Whereas with pullups the long head significantly helps the beginning of the pull where the lats and biceps are in their weakest (fully stretched) position.
only watched 5 minutes but already a banger… love the exchanges between Jeff and Dr Mike
These three guys are fabulous. I always learn when someone comes to workout with Dr Mike and Jared.
Jeff asking those goddamn good questions as always…love it! 👏👌
Did you say the long head is hit really hard during pulling movements? I'm very confused here
Yes it's hit on any shoulder extension, but not maximally unless the angle is good (like with pullovers).
@@ActivateTrueHealthlat push downs are a good example of this
No need to be confused, Mike is wrong and has the worst long head tris in the game
6:50 GAHDAMN JARED
my man is packing the entire burj khalifa in his pants
he just got a tight sack so it pushed his burj into the shorts, you can see him adjust it to make it relax just a couple of seconds later
Editor is killing it with these vids 🔥🔥🔥
Great to see these gents together again
