Perhaps the biggest reason to choose the 7x57mm Mauser is that the case head is the exact same size as the .30-06 case head. This means no modification of the bolt head and as you noted, it fits the original magazines quite nicely also.
I got the best pre vid advert I have ever seen on TH-cam, dramatic music and the Bovingdon tank museum ragging their tiger tank, it’s the only one left running and their driving like they stole it nice!!
When I was in Vietnam on my second tour the M-16 fiasco began. Some very concerned parents got help froma Auto Rifle specialist. He bought several Browning BARs. Removed the stock and fitted a Composite stock to the weapons, added military sights and sold them to them to the parents who shipped the assembled weapon to Taiwan. From there they found their way to the rightful owner. They made arrangements for 7 MM custom loads with AP tips. Hence when Charlie saw hid partners head blown off and helmet shredded they retreated.
This sounds like a lie, unless you are blackops you don't use specialized equipment or non issue calibers, how would they possibly get enough 7mm to carry out their missions and train adequately to muscle memory the rifle. I could maybe see .30-06 being used, if anything before 1968 they could have easily bought their kids M14 style rifles, even if it was Italian mag fed Garand, BM58s so they could use .308 which was there for the M60 which is what most of the units were cottoning onto during the M16 fiasco along with 12gauage, 1911s and 40mm Granade launchers.
I love this gun! It’s a classic BAR, but with some sensible modifications added to it that were intended to make it a blast to shoot. It looks used, and looks good used. I even like the amateur build quality; it has a Fallout-esque, post-apocolyptic feel that I find really cool. Edit: Hey Ian, if you can get some 7mm Mauser on hand, would you do a video on the range with it? It would be interesting to see how the mods worked out in comparion to, say, your experience with the Monitor.
Back in the late 70's I had a 1895 Chileno Mauser and surplus ammo Berdan primed & corrosive was 8-10 dollars per 100, I couldn't even reload regular brass for that price. It was all full metal jacket stuff and loaded with nitrocellulose flake powder. I still have about 50 rounds of it left in a ammo box loaded in bandoleros somewhere. The 30-06 stripper clips worked just fine with it.
Man never understand why it's easier for someone to write a bitchy comment than read o me of the ones right above theirs... he said he forgot to click 'public' this morning, no pattern
A military ball 7x57 is only about 10 grains lighter than a standard .30-06 military ball. However the .30-06 gives more muzzle velocity(at least compared to most present day 7x57 loads) and with a much larger powder charge and blast. Some of the loads during the era of 7x57 military service were actually quite punchy achieving about 2750fps with a 140gr bullet and one heck of battle range.
Collectable? No. Desirable? Hell yeah. Ian, please beg JDJ to let you run a few mags through that BAR; tell them it would be good advertising to bump up the hammer price.
Robert SPENCE just keep practicing and be patient with your bead, dont just watch the puddle be the puddle man. Though id assume you've got plenty of practice in the two years since you posted this lol
you have it wrong. "worth" is subjective. I own an (simpliest way to explain) M-16. it is "worth" the multi thousands I paid to me and many other people. cost? well before 1986 an AR could have been bought for $400 and a gunsmith could have made it an "M-16" for $200 or you could have done it yourself for $100. then either way there is a $200 tax. so worth is decided by supply and demand.
Mongo63a I hope not. That would completely ruin the gun. The whole point in it was to make the best shooter's BAR possible using various available parts.
Rather, I think this is already what it's supposed to be: a shoulder-fired full-auto full-size blaster. This is for exploding watermelons, old paint cans, and burnt-out television sets, for shooting at junk cars being towed across a field with a winch, and generally grokking the nature of the "Giggle Switch" and why it is called such. It is superior for its existing historic nature; a BAR of any sort is desirous, it need not aspire to more that it may not have total claim to.
Michael Carnes: There should be a classification, not for guns that one is allowed to own, but for guns that one is not allowed to destroy, like the UK's listed building status. Awarded not just to historical buildings but to INTERESTING ones as well. This is a firearm of outstanding shooting interest and should be preserved.
You know, I found a M1 Garand converted to 7mm Mauser at a gunshow by me; actually it was there both in the spring and fall run of the same show. Maybe I'll pick it up this April if it's still there! Along with the description it had the name of the gunsmith who did the work. I didn't pay much attention then, but I wish I had taken note of it now. I wonder how common 7mm Mauser conversions were? Pretty neat and clever way to take advantage of the (then) cheap surplus and low recoil as you mentioned.
One day, Gun Jesus will be hired as technical consultant for a big historical action movie. He will appears as an extra, as the disposable guy, the first to die five minutes into the movie. It's only line will be "Hi! I'm Ian ... " right before been shooted by the enemy.

Do we have an idea when this rifle was produced? For a few decades the BAR's firepower was unmatched for a shoulder arm. This looks like the best shooter of any BAR I've seen. It's got the major upgrades. However, by the time this was produced you may have had M2 Carbines, StG44s, and other lighter fully-automatic rifles available, which don't fill the same role but do offer fully-automatic firepower beyond that of SMGs in much handier, more versatile rifles. 7x57mm Mauser is a superb cartridge and better suited to an automatic rifle than .30-06. If it functions in the BAR, 6.5x55mm would have been a good choice as well, for even less recoil while still maintaining first-rate rifle accuracy and excellent terminal performance.
I was searching for a wildcat cartridge created for the AR-15, called the 7mm VAR (Valkyrie AR), and ended up here instead. Interestingly, the website for this cartridge compares it to the 7mm-08 Rem, but sized for the AR-15 platform (overselling it a bit , I think); the 7-08 Rem is itself essentially a 7mm Mauser sized for short action rifles (it uses the 7x51/308 case, necked down to 7mm, and loaded to the same COAL). I loved this video and would love to get my hands on the BAR.
Interesting, someone actually made an M-BAR (Mauser BAR) and it functions! Who cares if its a bastardized BAR, I bet that'll be hella fun to shoot! I wonder if the guy who made this also addressed the BAR's other faults?
Nice. Wish u had equipnent to weigh it. The actual weight difference would be interesting. I would love to have a semiauto in 7x57. Seems like there was something semi chambered in 7x57, but i can't remember what. I know about the Venezuelan FN49's in 7x49. I think a few FAL's were so chambered as well. A Ljungmann AG-42 chambered in 7x57 would rock. It's such a great cartridge. I assume when you said lighter bullet u were referring to the later military loadings with the 139 gr bullet. We all know the original 1890's load was a 173 gr bullet☺. Of course, the heavy 30-06 load used in MG's (and probably BAR's sometimes) was the 178 gr (i think) boattail load. One of my shooting buddies was in the Army in the late 50's, and shot that load in competition. Better long range performance than 150 gr ball. I think it was also the sniper load until the M40 and the M21 rifles came along. All of this reminds me, i still haven't test fired the 1895 Chilean that i've had for a few years. Great video as always. Thank you
Wow that gun is cool as shit. These are the type of videos I like. Guns that have been improved and are more practical. The ancient stuff is cool too but this is the sort of modifications that personalize the gun.
I wish I was rich. This would be the perfect birthday gift for my room mate. He's got an unhealthy obsession with BARs and pretty much anything that has a wood stock, blued steel, and full power cartridges.
This is how M1918 modernisation should look from the beggining. Added grip, rechambering for "weaker" cartridge that's actually better than 30-06, shorter barrel for better handling and less weight instead of long-ass anti-tank rifle style barrel that doesn't add absolutely anything besides making the gun heavy and awkward. If he also added a better muzzle device and invented working drum mags or belt-fed conversion for this then holy shit, US lost a lot by not having this guy in ordnance department.
I was thinking about a BAR with this configuration. If you ever have the opportunity to shoot this one or something similar, please make a video on it. :)
I can see this being a blast to own and shoot, but, ya just gotta ask why is it up for auction? $15 to $25 thousand? I don't think you can get an M-16 for that anymore. I know its the starting guess a bid but that's not right somehow.
Perhaps the biggest reason to choose the 7x57mm Mauser is that the case head is the exact same size as the .30-06 case head. This means no modification of the bolt head and as you noted, it fits the original magazines quite nicely also.
Dale E
Someone worked hard on this and knew what they were doing.
Plus it recoils less and should be a little flatter shooting.
Question is 7mm Mauser still available to purchase
@@omartorres5688 Yep. 7x57 is still available with not much difficulty

Someone's 'What would Browning Do?' project?
Sometimes Bubba's on to something. This looks so fun to shoot, plus it would totally make you look like a badass going full-auto on the range.
He gave us the BAR we needed, not the BAR we wanted.
I wonder if Ohio Ordinance Works can make this into an HCAR.
i wonder if gun jesus can make a review of an HCAR (if he haven't done allready so...).
"Lots of shooting and lots of fun." Beautiful.
It's got a "shoulder thing that goes up"!
The predator had one of those... I do believe they're called uhh... barrel shrouds.
No! That's a Barrel Shroud!
Lol
Seriously though, what's the thing at the end of the stock for?
Thats what I say hahaha
What a lovely home defense weapon ☺
You never know when the home intruder may break into your house with an APC while wearing an EOD suit
Possibilities are low but never 0%
I got the best pre vid advert I have ever seen on TH-cam, dramatic music and the Bovingdon tank museum ragging their tiger tank, it’s the only one left running and their driving like they stole it nice!!
I'd call this a Bubba job, but this guy actually knew what he was doing...
Based bubba?
Can’t be bubba because he had the foresight to piece this thing together instead of use a complete and original weapon.
Fascinating. I would have never thought of someone doing that. Then again i always wanted a BAR in 25-06. No real reason, Just because really.
That actually sounds awesome and isn't that reason enough?
All those Thompsons behind you 😍
Now that looks fun. Having it on a T&E tripod would be pretty sweet too.
when I first read the title I thought someone made a 7mm Rem Mag BAR. As soon as the words "improve shootability" were spoken I knew I was wrong
When I was in Vietnam on my second tour the M-16 fiasco began. Some very concerned parents got help froma Auto Rifle specialist. He bought several Browning BARs. Inb4 it winds up in the background in one of the future Forgotten Weapons/InRange TV as part of Ian's collection.
Better off with Ian instead of moss pawn.

John Browning: Well, I tried. But at least I made a good LMG.
Some guy: I got you bro!
Except the BAR is not a good Light Machine Gun.
The optional tripod would add to the day's fun, shooting down aircraft. A real enthusiast's rifle!
That's going to sell for A LOT of money. Congrats to whoever wins! Sounds like it would be great to shoot.
NOTHING is cooler than the BAR, no matter what the chambering! That "shoulder-thingy" assists in off-handed full-auto fire, à la the M-14 and BM-59.

*does the thing with the thing*
C'mon man, you know the thing
The guy who made that thing is my hero.
Gun Jesus, you need this in your collection!
We need a youtube channel dedicated to franken guns
That looks like it would be fun to shoot, maybe not a collector but definitely a fun shooter.
I actually love this, it looks amazing
That thing is awesome hats off to the man that built it damn fine weapon

Their expected price if pretty low for a US BAR. It would nto surprise me that someone gobbles this one up and converts it to a 1918A2 configuration.
True, but it is a full-auto gun, that gives it something of its price back, I would imagine.

Shot by the enemy
That looks pretty good, I think the term parts bin special may apply to that resto-mod bar
He used the word bastard 🍷 cheers to the greatest of bastard guns and the minds behind them
Whoever buys it should do the next Desert Brutality with it
This gun is similar in concept to the brush war BAR the US Marines developed in the early 1930s.
Apart from the calibre, obviously.
Bastardized fun-machine?
THAT'S. MY BAG, BABY!!!
I wish I could afford it. :(
Looks like a fun range toy.
7mm 7min
Small, but perfectly formed...
I never thought I'd see a BAR and think... " Cute!"
It's kind of a hodge podge, but I like it
I put a 20 rnd mag on my G43, reminds me of this except its a 8mm.
Whenever I see gun Jesus post a video I get so excited
I was searching for a wildcat cartridge created for the AR-15, called the 7mm VAR (Valkyrie AR), and ended up here instead. Interestingly, the website for this cartridge compares it to the 7mm-08 Rem, but sized for the AR-15 platform (overselling it a bit , I think); the 7-08 Rem is itself essentially a 7mm Mauser sized for short action rifles (it uses the 7x51/308 case, necked down to 7mm, and loaded to the same COAL). I loved this video and would love to get my hands on the BAR.
That's cool as fuck actually.
That really is a cool one of a kind.
Man, thats a lot of tommys!
I guess they got their money's worth out of it at least
Really wish you get to run that one day
Many Thompsons
I would kill to see him examine the entire Thompson family..God, that's a wet dream right there.
Looks cool man
Jun gesus is back at it again
Thank you
The Venezuelan FN49 fires 7 x 57; I have one in my safe. It's a sweet shooter!
All i want for Christmas is one of those Thompsons!!!!
I thought that it might be a post war FN model. But, I was distracted by the row of Thompson SMGs behind him.
Interesting. Thanks, Ian.
The BAR should have always had a pistol grip.
Pretty much if you make a video about a BAR, I'll watch it
That looks like if someone had a bar but really wanted a m16.
Buy it Ian, dooo eeeetttt! And sell that sub gun you got that you cant get ammo for..
I am intrigued.
Wouldn't the long range sights come in handy when mounted to a bren tripod?
I aint even mad...thats amazing
I was thinking about a BAR with this configuration. If you ever have the opportunity to shoot this one or something similar, please make a video on it. :)
It's like the What Would Stoner Do project AR. What Would Browning Do, perhaps?
I can see this being a blast to own and shoot, but, ya just gotta ask why is it up for auction?
$15 to $25 thousand? I don't think you can get an M-16 for that anymore. I know its the starting guess a bid but that's not right somehow.
That’s great custom BAR. Can you do video about shortened BAR “Clyde Barrow style”? Or maybe Vietnam-style SOG shortened RPD?
Sure would like to see the final price on this baby...
Also mad max style Bar
Bubba... ya did alright today. Ya did alright.
Praise be Gun Jesus
Funny isn't it, how the first improvement on the BAR by basically everyone except the US army was to put a pistol grip on it
That gun is cool also love your vids man
Amazing gun
ian really wanted this
Beautiful
A gunsmith could get that cleaned up pretty easily. Definitely fix those welds.
Maine? Oh that explains it.
Loving this ratio of thumbs up
Good gun for.chasing package thieves as those thieves don't know what the gun is
"You are gods mistake"-John Browning
Oh wow is it a BAR or an FAL cause both of these guns look similar ( the BAR is the one that is in this video not actual BAR)
Theres those Thompsons again
video? it would be nice to see them all
Rifles are meant to be fired not mounted on the wall! As Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones said once about Guitars mounted on the wall!🤨🔫🎸🇬🇧
Sweet, & I bet it was mounted on a vehicle as well🤔
Nice Thompson wallpaper...
The good thing about Texas is that one can own a gun like that once the paperwork has been cleared
Please do a Thompson timeline like what you did with the sten guns
If it works, it's maybe the best BAR in the world. (Low bar lol.)
Thanks for the vid sir.
