    Ostara is a wonderful celebration in the Wheel of the Year. Falling on the 20th-23rd March/September it is a celebration that ultimately became Easter and holds a special place in the hearts of many Pagans.

    I am from Germany. The Goddess' name ist Pronounced like A-Os-tray. At least that's the closest I can explain it for English speakers.
    Thanks for the video btw. It is a great inspiration. Have a blessed Ostara.

    I know a lot of atheists or agnostics celebrate Christian holidays because everyone else is celebrating but why not pagan holidays? I may not believe in gods or goddesses as actual beings but I like the idea of celebrating how beautiful and ever-changing this earth is. I'd rather take the time to appreciate the seasons and nature than whatever hallmark is pushing. Is it okay to observe these holidays if you don't really believe in the gods or goddesses behind them?

    • @torib796
      @torib796 5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Absolutely! It is completely valid to celebrate pagan holidays without involving deities. I practice secular witchcraft and never involve deities

    • @fruitandveggies24
      @fruitandveggies24 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Of course! These holidays are simply the cultural celebrations of our ancient European ancestors. I know a lot of agnostic people that follow the pagan wheel of the year because it is our birthright, something our ancestors have done for millennia.

      of course. not all witches are wiccan (who are theistic). btw - all major christian holidays are based on pagan holidays, it was an incentive to convert people!

      Honestly a lot of witches do that, a good amount of ‘pagans’ don’t actually believe in gods, you’re all good mate!

      I grew up Catholic and Pagan (Dad was Catholic, and my grandmothers were witches. Interesting combination, right?) I am now Atheist but still celebrate the Sabbats rather than the Christian holidays because Paganism is still more in line with my spirituality and I've also just absolutely loved that the Sabbats actually pay homage to our mother Earth and nature and everything that she provides for us :) I don't believe in God or any deities, but I believe in the one thing that I can see, hear and smell, and that provides for us: Earth. Have a blessed Ostara!

    This is my first year celebrating Ostara and I’m sooooo excited. I live with my parents so unfortunately there isn’t too much I can do without them getting suspicious. But I plan on paint eggs, making hot crossed buns, taking a nature walk, and doing some spring cleaning!

    I am not really allowed to practice my craft since it makes my mom uncomfortable even though she knows I identify as pagan. So I will be secretly celebrating by wearing a pastel green dress and doing a lot of cooking. I started yesterday with making tomato sauce from scratch. Today I will be making a chocolate Strawberry cheesecake and hard boiled eggs, tomorrow it will be using the left over egg whites from the cheesecake to make meringue cookies, then finally finishing out my celebration on Saturday the day of Ostara with a family dinner of spring salad with fruits that are in season for my area and stuffed peppers. I made my menu based on things that are in season to be able to participate in my first Ostara. I am excited especially as each day that passes I fill the energy around me growing and become lighter and less stagnant.

    Ever since the early 2000's I've always enjoyed decorating the house according to the equinox colors and buying bedding to match it also. Does that mean I'm a pagan "at heart"?? I really enjoy the ritualistic aspects the pagans do. I see people who practice this are very kind hearted people and seem happy for the most part. This is a relief from the Christianity I grew up in. This is why I'm becoming more attracted to paganism. I want that same inner joy. I'll always believe in God of course, I just want to celebrate something happy that doesn't pertain to the end of the world (Christians love this) and just enjoy life once again. And strangely Odin has been on my mind for the past few weeks. I just recently bought a book that tells you your diety based on numerology. Who you click with......and surprisingly.....Odin is one of my Nordic gods. I don't know if he's calling me or what. I'll do a tarot reading on it later on today. I come from a different background and was nervous about all this. Oh, and I found out yesterday he's one of the most powerful ones. Hmmmm......happy early Ostara everyone!! I'm going to try and celebrate it too. To bring me happiness. Haven't been happy since 2014 and I and you all deserve happiness. Sorry for the rambling. 😂😃💖

      Nakita Tillis Hi! It definitely sounds like you might want to read into neopagan spirituality. I’ve been a witch for a couple of years; for me it is about moving with the earth, celebrating the seasons, and finding reverence for nature and those I love. It helps me live a more fulfilling life. The best thing about modern paganism is you can practice however you wish and build what works for you ❤️ Much love

      Witchcraft also isn't connected to any religion :) You can be christian and a witch without problems (except vlose minded people, but they are a problem anyway,sooo). I happen to not believe in any god(s) / goddess(es) and I still enjoy working with the energies within me and the world. Something else worth looking into is shadow work, it's an amazing aspekt of witchcraft. I really hope you find your happiness.

    I really appreciate all the research you do into the themes of Sabbats. I never knew the Easter bunny was part of German folklore. I always thought that was just a Christian thing. Thank you for teaching me something new not just today but with every video.

      There isn't really anything in christian easter traditions about the easter bunny. Its usually considered a "secular" easter symbol. (Unless there is some modern attempt to make it seem to be christian like the recently invented story of the candy cane being a lesson about Jesus)

    • @KandicePolut
      @KandicePolut 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Almost all “Christian” traditions are variations of borrowed(stolen) Pagan beliefs and rituals. Pagans existed waaaaaay before Christianity. I too have just recently learned this. Cool huh?

  • @roisinnigcrainn7722
    @roisinnigcrainn7722 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    In Ireland we pronounce it "yustruh" - the E and O are sort of blended in pronunciation, and the last E is a soft sound. I think our pronunciation is similar to the French one. But of course any witch, pagan or Wiccan can pronounce it as they feel called to.
    Edit: We love to make hot cross buns at Easter in Ireland! They're one of the first foods we're able to make after winter due to their simplistic ingredients, and they incorporate currants and sultanas left over from last autumn. We also traditionally eat the largest spring lamb on the farm during Eostre. Not only that, but we often make flower wreaths to wear on our heads, or we wear flowers pinned to our jackets as a more practical option.
    I hope these suggestions help you!

    These are some beautiful recommendations, thank you so much. I love the story of the easter bunny, very nice for children.
    Just adding to the hot cross buns: they are a catholic tradition from England. They were started as a way to celebrate the middle of lent and were baked by members of the clergy and handed out to the poor. They used what back then was seen as luxury items like spices and dried fruit, which were just not available to the celts who lived in England before the roman occupation. So the cross really is just representative of christian belief, but that doesn’t stop it from being adapted to pagan beliefs. So many pagan beliefs were adapted to fit christian beliefs, so why not have it the other way around. And i love that you mentioned the 4 solstices/equinoxes as a way of interpreting the buns.
    Have a lovely celebration.

    May I suggest a web site called "Forvo" for pronunciations? It's a great site where you can find many words spoken by those who speak the language (German, French, Dutch, English, etc.) They even let you know where in the country the speaker is from. This helps to understand dialects (America's "Southern Accent", and things like that).
    It's a really great place to get help with pronunciations.
    For the main page - forvo.com/
    For Ostara in German - forvo.com/word/ostara/#de
    P.S. I have no problem doing earth tones for Ostara, but pastels...? Not happening.

    As a German i'd say you pronounced the name pretty perfectly (although I haven't seen it written like you did - I know it by "Ostern")

    not sure if it's been pointed out already so sorry if it has, I'm not meaning to nag! I just noticed the description has an error on the dates for when Ostara takes place 💖 love your channel 💖 😍

    Hey Hearth!! As always, I absolutely love your holiday videos (as well as all the others!)!! Thank you so much for the folklore about the hare and the chicken! I've been listening to a few podcasts and they have all been a little hard pressed to explain the rationale for the hare. I'm assuming that the last link you included: blogs.loc.gov/folklife/2016/04/ostara-and-the-hare/ is the one with the information?
    I need to watch this video again and include the information into my BoS. I realized halfway through that I was just watching and not taking notes, so that's definitely something I need to redo. Anyways, thanks again! See you around!

    This is going to be my first Ostara celebration, I am so excited ^_^ Although, I am kind of still confused about my own faith. For example, I definitely worship nature, the energies in nature that create life and I want to give back in some way, by meditating, connecting with those energies, setting up an altar with offerings but...I don`t know exactly who I am worshiping or making the offerings for...Does that make sense? I am still new and I am learning about deities but I know so little and I still haven`t found my way. So, I don`t know where to direct my energy when I pray or make an offering. I want to direct it to Earth and nature but I don`t know if that makes sense. If anyone has some advice I would appreciate it ^_^

    My favourite bit about this story is how sassy this goddess is when the male hare whinges about not doing birdy stuff she’s like “well sure here lay some eggs” probs not what he had in mind 😂😂

    I found your videos a month ago and have been very helpful in helping me understand the path I have chosen for myself. Thank you so much for sharing all this great information. I did have a question and I hope you can answer it. I want to make a sabbath altar and I was wondering when I should change the altar for the new sabbath. Please help if you can. Thank you so much and please continue your videos.

      I change mine based on when I feel it's right, I've had my Imbolc altar set up now for over a month, Imbolc has long passed but I have only felt the need to change it in the past few days. I would go with your gut, if you start feeling the need for change, then it's the right time.

    If you live near a Rita’s Waterice, you can get free waterice. If you’re willing to deal with the lines.

    Is that Harmony Nice’s book? I’m planning on ordering it to read through and solidify my commitment to Wicca and choose a path as I’m leaning towards becoming a green Wiccan/witch and am excited to experience my first Ostara in the coming weeks :) Thank you if you see this!!

    If you can find and watch a 1993 documentary by the BBC with David Attenborough as narrator called "Shadow of the Hare". Gives a great overview of the origin of Easter and its pagan origin. Including the Hare and the lap wing. A bird whose nest resembles a hares scrape. I think it is pretty easy to see how the myths got their start. Thanks for the ideas and another great video. Harmony be yours Hearth

      maybe make an altar outside? I've never done it myself but I've heard other people doing it! You could probably find a video on youtube :) (I'm also 14 btw!)
