The actors and extras went through a two week crash course with my local Iaido club and learned a bit of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu, so there's definitely a lot of care given to historical details on that front. That said, I think the swordplay in the show itself strays pretty far from what was taught for the sake of on-screen aesthetics. I can only assume that would also be true of other parts of Shogun, besides just the swordplay. Balancing historical accuracy and entertainment isn't always easy but I think they did a pretty solid job in the end.
Great video! I'm in Osaka now, have been traveling all over Japan. Last week I was in Kyoto and went to the Tozando store because of your videos there, I bought my first Iaito, I have knowledge in martial arts, used to practice Kendo, my height is 180 cm so I got a 2.50 shaku and the lightest one they had which weights 760g. Even got the Dogi and the Hakama to start practicing. I'm really happy with it, all thanks to you!
Reminds me of buying a musical instrument, there’s the student models that are cheapest, intermediate nicer ones that cost a few hundred more, then the fancy professional ones that you need to pay in installments cause they’re so expensive. 7:50 hexagon! Does it sound like a kaiju or tokusatsu villain name to you? Hehehe
Speaking from experience, most people when they buy their first iaito wind up with one that's slightly too long. My ryuha demands a length that when the sword hand is held by your side, the tip of the blade clears the floor by 0.5" or about 1.25 cm. Regardless of the chart, that means a 2.2 Shaku length. Great I thought! Not so fast, and here is where everyone makes a mistake. That 2.2 Shaku length is from the tip of the Kissaki to the hand not taking into account the length the Habaki adds, approximately 2 cm. Now it's slightly too long but manageable. By contrast, I just bought a real antique katana with a nagasa of 64.1 cm or 2.12 Shaku. The Habaki is 2 cm long so now the length is coming right at the perfect 2.2 Shaku. Always take into account the extra length the Habaki is going to add, even a little bit makes a HUGE difference starting out.

My wife bought me a iaito several years ago when she found out that I like swords. It coincidentally has just the right length for me. Must be a sign that I should take up formal training…

I’m 1.85cm tall, but I prefer a longer Iaito. The one I use is 2.60 shaku, I find it has a few advantages being longer. It definitely helps me to use my left hand more when doing Nikitsuke.

I was visiting my friend that I go way back with, and was able to host him at my house up until April 30’th, 2024. I come home from school, sad that my friend had gone, when I remembered… in the days before he left, we got out my katana and started dueling. Him having been teaching himself for the past years, said I really needed to get stronger and better at the katana. So, as I remembered these things, I looked up, “how to handle a katana.” I scrolled past the first three videos, and then I saw this. I've never owned a Iaito, only real katana and bokuto. I only recently discovered there was an alternative to bokuto (Iaito) for training. Your videos have been enlightening and shown me things I did not know prior to watching them, thank you for sharing your knowledge wigh everyone.
I got luck and found one for $10 at a pawn shop, I live in America, and luckily it was the proper size and weight for me,only thing that it's missing is the string on the saya

I started with 2 shaku 7 sun and after 4 years was able/forced to change to the full 3 Shaku by my teacher (Erwin Steinhauser, first Non-Japanese in the All Nippon Kobudo Organisation) But thats what we inherited, it was earned by the (Tosa) Yamanouchi and passed down through their Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu (Yamanouchi Ha) and legalised for practice with real katana in 1947 already.

I got an iaito nearly the same weight as my shinken, but I have done bladesmithing for several decades and I am used to controlling a decent weight of metal.
I purchased an Iaito for my birthday last year from Tozando (linked in the description). Since it was my first one, I selected mostly "basic" options. Thankfully, I have owned a bokuto for a little over a decode that is fairly heavy (even more than my iaito), so by combining what I've learned about my own preferences from the bokuto with Tozando's charts and recommendations, I was able to customize the iaito to pretty much the perfect proportions for myself.
When I started in Kobudo, initially I had a fairly old, lightweight Iaito, probably better suited to a teenager, so I went to Nosyudo and ordered something more suitable. My instructors didn't have many stipulations: standard length and weight, nothing too flashy. Once nagasa and stuka length were determined it was more time consuming selecting the koshirae, but overall was able to get something really nice and mostly bespoke for about 57,000 yen. It's definitely worth spending a little more initially, and perhaps save up for something special in a few years.
I'm jealous of those suits of armor you have behind you. 😮 Wise folk will say that money 💴 can't buy happiness. But it can buy swords, and that's pretty much the same thing. 😉 7:52 Hexagon is the word you're looking for. The name for something with 6 sides.

I've a steel iaïto much heavy and longer than my light alloy iaïto, when you're familliar with one blade it is interresting to discover and adapt your moves with another blade.
I use Iado training with real Katana the result Saya Sheat is damage & I must order new Sheat and now I open My real Katana very slowly and carefully, & I will buy a training Katana for Iado training.
By the way, buy a katana with a leather tskamaki, not a fabric one. The leather has a better contact with the ray skin underneath, so the knots don't move along the hilt. A high quality katana has a very strong wrapping, so the knots don't move. A fabric tskamaki has a weaker contact and friction with the ray skin than leather.
I think it depends on how it's wrapped. I've had cotton and silk tsukamaki that don't move at all after years of use. On the other hand I've seen cheap swords where the tsukamaki is coming unravelled after a year or two.
I have a question! When I was much younger, I purchased a beautiful sword from a nearby shop. It is certainly not a traditional katana, but I still find it beautiful. Based on the research I have done, its shape and style is what is called Unokubi Zukuri. I have seen a similar looking blade on your channel and others on Naginata: two sets of grooves on the blade, and the ridge of the back of the blade thins out quite a bit closer to the tip. Is this a traditional style of blade construction? Can you discuss more about things like repurposing old blades like Naginata into Katana in historic Japan? Thank you!
Honestly regarding japan law about sharp weapon. What is the definition of "sword" from Japanese law? If something can cut and above 6 inch, why dont make blunt sword made from actual steel in the first place? Definitely something more than just that
Great video! Can I ask for your opinion? I'm going to be nidan in May. Currently I have steel iaito, quite heavy. Because of it's weight it's hard for me to practice exact angles of cuts (15 deg, 45 deg etc). Do you think I should buy light, aluminum alloy iaito? Or should I stay with the steel one and practice Iaido with real katana weight? Thanks!
What is the advantage of longer than normal katana? Does it help you to use proper technique? Or is it just something you personally prefer? I like the hexagonal tsuba on your custom katana.
Shougo-sensei can you talk about Jizo statues? I saw them in a game called Mini Ninjas as collectables and a character from the Touhou Project named Narumi Yatadera is one, I wonder what their purpose was, and when they were made.

Hi Shogo, i'm really glad I found your channel, right when reading Shogun and Musashi again (& seeing the movies). I got a question, hope you know it. I had seen a commercial in the early 2000s, in Europe on the German Pro7 channel I think. A Japanese office worker goes to his boss, bows, then shows him something very enthusiastically and at the end, he moves his head 3 times to the right, saying "Boo, Boo, Boo!". His boss goes "Ooooh" and together they go to the next boss. They bow, they show him their discovery and go "Boo Boo Booo!"while moving their heads to the side. And so on to the next boss. The commercial ends with a screen with all of them arranged in rows syncing their head going "Boo Boo Booo!". Not sure what the commercial was about, possibly electronics, a photo camera?

Quick question: my katana, or laito, (I hope I spelled it right) I’m not really sure which, has these square notches in the blade. They were from a dull blade hitting the blade of my katana or laito. Is this normal? Can you please make a video on it?

This really really needs an edit. At 1:35 you talk about tamahagane katana being made using a special manufacuting method that reduces air bubbles, so you clearly mean iaito, not steel katana. At 1:50 you talk about pouring iron into a mold, again you clearly mean Iaito (aluminium/zinc alloy, not iron). That's as far as I got.

By the way, buy a katana with a leather tskamaki, not a fabric one. The leather has a better contact with the ray skin underneath, so the knots don't move along the hilt. A high quality katana has a very strong wrapping, so the knots don't move. A fabric tskamaki has a weaker contact and friction with the ray skin than leather.
I think it depends on how it's wrapped. I've had cotton and silk tsukamaki that don't move at all after years of use. On the other hand I've seen cheap swords where the tsukamaki is coming unravelled after a year or two.
I have a question! When I was much younger, I purchased a beautiful sword from a nearby shop. It is certainly not a traditional katana, but I still find it beautiful. Based on the research I have done, its shape and style is what is called Unokubi Zukuri. I have seen a similar looking blade on your channel and others on Naginata: two sets of grooves on the blade, and the ridge of the back of the blade thins out quite a bit closer to the tip. Is this a traditional style of blade construction? Can you discuss more about things like repurposing old blades like Naginata into Katana in historic Japan? Thank you!

Great video! Can I ask for your opinion? I'm going to be nidan in May. Currently I have steel iaito, quite heavy. Because of it's weight it's hard for me to practice exact angles of cuts (15 deg, 45 deg etc). Do you think I should buy light, aluminum alloy iaito? Or should I stay with the steel one and practice Iaido with real katana weight? Thanks!

What is the advantage of longer than normal katana? Does it help you to use proper technique? Or is it just something you personally prefer? I like the hexagonal tsuba on your custom katana.
It’s much more difficult to handle so it’s good for your training! You’ll need to use your body bigger and more efficiently!
Shougo-sensei can you talk about Jizo statues? I saw them in a game called Mini Ninjas as collectables and a character from the Touhou Project named Narumi Yatadera is one, I wonder what their purpose was, and when they were made.

Hi Shogo, i'm really glad I found your channel, right when reading Shogun and Musashi again (& seeing the movies). I got a question, hope you know it. I had seen a commercial in the early 2000s, in Europe on the German Pro7 channel I think. A Japanese office worker goes to his boss, bows, then shows him something very enthusiastically and at the end, he moves his head 3 times to the right, saying "Boo, Boo, Boo!". His boss goes "Ooooh" and together they go to the next boss. They bow, they show him their discovery and go "Boo Boo Booo!"while moving their heads to the side. And so on to the next boss. The commercial ends with a screen with all of them arranged in rows syncing their head going "Boo Boo Booo!". Not sure what the commercial was about, possibly electronics, a photo camera?

This really really needs an edit. At 1:35 you talk about tamahagane katana being made using a special manufacuting method that reduces air bubbles, so you clearly mean iaito, not steel katana. At 1:50 you talk about pouring iron into a mold, again you clearly mean Iaito (aluminium/zinc alloy, not iron). That's as far as I got.
So I need to learn from Shogo and others before I can EVER hope to approach Seki sensei.
Ah well. Baby steps.

I am 180cm tall and am using an Iaito with 3 shaku of blade length. I started with 2 shaku 7 sun and after 4 years was able/forced to change to the full 3 Shaku by my teacher (Erwin Steinhauser, first Non-Japanese in the All Nippon Kobudo Organisation)
But thats what we inherited, it was earned by the (Tosa) Yamanouchi and passed down through their Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu (Yamanouchi Ha) and legalised for practice with real katana in 1947 already.
