Strangely I think you're going to see the shield return. The pistol is the modern version of the sword. Kevlar and other advanced materials offer a way to stop a bullet. Various SWAT unit are now being outfitted with shields.
Different shields had different purposes and for most purposes a dagger is a terrible substitute. A pavise was a large shield used by ranged troops, mostly crossbow men, to be placed on the ground and be used as cover against enemy missile fire. A viking style round shield with its center grip was also designed to block enemy missiles. But it was light and can be pivoted around the central grip for attacking from multiple directions. It was also big to allow for shield walls. The knightly heater shield was smaller so it doesn't allow for shield walls and it was more restrictive as a strap shield then a center grip shield. But the smaller size meant it didn't interfere with riding as much and as a strapped shield you could hold the stirrups with the same hand as you hold the shield. It was also much thicker then viking style shields to protect against high power crossbows. The buckler was a small shield with a center grip making it very nimble and good as active defense, but it's small size meant it wasn't very useful against missile fire. It was also the easiest to carry around in day to day life. Daggers could be used as active protection similar to bucklers, but they where even less restrictive in every day live since they can be sheathed where as a buckler hooked to your belt can bounce around which can be annoying when you travel a whole day. Another defensive weapon that was used in the off hand and was very comfortable to wear in every day life was a cloak. Neither of these defensive weapons is better then the other they just have been designed for very different purposes.

shields were used less because of the advent of better armour.. and for other tactical reasons. the dagger never caused the shield any problems.
