48 Hours in a City with No Laws: Slab City

  • Slab City, known as the last free place in the world, located in the middle of a desert in California has no laws, no electricity, no running water, or even street names.
Despite being situated in one of the wealthiest states in the USA, Slab City is associated with poverty. When the government abandoned and closed this area, which it used as a military base in World War II, only scraps and concrete slabs remained. Then the area became Slab City and attracted homeless or adventurers from various parts of the country.

They then complain about illegal immigrants when they show up and work to make it possible to own things. They should build a business there and hire some immigrants just to see if they still complain about their jobs being taken by illegals or if it’s all a bluff

Yup, Slab City is a great liberal experiment that shows the results of unconstrained freedom without boundaries. It sets a good example for how a functioning society must balance freedom with boundaries. Unbridled anarchy is untenable.

Yes, it's not free if the state's monopoly on violence can reach there. It would be better to say that some parts of the South American jungle are free, because there there are in fact no authorities. You could as well say that Christiania in Copenhagen is free, but that wouldn't be so interesting to a US audience.

I spent a long day in slab city, and found it fascinating. It’s a mix of artists, drug attics, and people avoiding the law, but my encounters where all quite friendly. I had a very nice man show me through his outdoor house, talk to me all about living there, and show me his art. It’s not completely unserviced, as I did see a fedex truck making a delivery while I was out there. There are also street names and numbers. Just off the top of my head, I remember Sidewinder Drive was one. It’s an amazing spot to visit if you’re in the Salton Sea area, which also means you should hit up Bombay Beach as well. They have a bar, and drinks are $1 and proceeds go to folks in more dire need at the end of the night, but I’d recommend staying away from the shots, as they don’t wash the glasses! Anyway, great video! It’s been a couple years since I’ve been there, and it looks like a few new art installations have been added, so that’s awesome to see!

You can have a well functioning anarchist society, if all members of it are civilized, well-functioning individuals in themselves. Of course, the state wants you to believe that you must have a state to survive or at least live a decent life. That's how the state controls you.

He became paranoid and angry, he started yelling at me and said "you said X and I never said that so you are putting words in my mouth" I then had to leave quickly as he became aggressive, in another occasion I was sitting in a bench next to the his elderly homeless woman who is always reading books, I always saw her in my neighborhood, I just asked her "what genre of books do you like?" There's a bookstore in front and I also had a book. Omg this woman became so extremely angry at me for that question! She became a different person and stated yelling at me so loud "that's a stupid question! That's a stupid question!" She would say........ I learned that these people carry A LOT OF chips on their shoulders and when on drugs one single word that's logical to us but that gets their brain into another world becomes a snap moment. Those drugs their in make them hallucinate the worst too. Never feel comfortable around these people you don't know how they are going to snap! By a word trigger.

I admire these "pioneers" of the new frontier. People that "own" their land and homes generally do not recognize the fact that you truly don't own that property/house even if the bank doesn't have the deed anymore. If the govt of the USA wants your land, you better BELIEVE they are going to have it. Sure, they'll throw a few bucks at you, but they WILL have it.
