If you want to use Plasti-dip, use the liquid version that comes in a can not the aerosol version. This was the original Plasti-dip that you dipped your hand tools into to give them a rubberized grip. You just dip the ends of the sticks into the can, pull them out and let them dry. Then you can reseal the can for more sticks in the future.
I use Gorilla Snot™ gripping aid, but its a total bitch to get off your hands when you are done drumming... my computer mouse has a layer of it because of this... P.S. LOVE the triple meeting shirt.
I'm an old diabetic. My hands are what I can only describe as waxy, so the slippery stick thing is a big deal. Another old diabetic drummer told me about vegetable glycerine. It's used in cosmetics, medications, other stuff. It's kind of like a very very fine syrup. Just a single drop or so rubbed between both hands really did the trick for me. Game changer. Then just use normal sticks. No residue to speak of. Worth a try.
Thank You ! Just tried this for a full hour. Got some at Wally World this morning. Applied to the sticks too from fulcrum all the way down the butt where I had sanded with 180 grit. Bought a bundle of generic sticks on amazon. Now they're usable. This works !
I was really surprised that David didn't include the go-to DIY approach to mimicking Regal Tip's finish--Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac--which is preferred by those who want a more traditional lacquer finish rather than a more aggressive rubberized finish. I'd love to see him give both the aerosol spray can and the liquid brush-on (or rag or sponge??) can a try to evaluate ease of application and best result. I would just buy Vic Firth Double Glaze 5B for a similar result but they unfortunately don't seem to offer it in a nylon tip version.
I have used handlebar grip of my old bike before - pulled really tight it works well and reduces shock a lot. I have also used electricians rubber tape too, both work fine and are super durable. The handlebar grip can also be peeled off and reapplied to a new stick with little difficulty.
I'm using grip tape for tennis/badminton rackets... if you put it on real tight the tape will last longer than the stick and you can reuse it. it also helps with head-heavy sticks to maintain a better balance.
I always carry a coarse grit piece of sandpaper in my snare bag. If i'm having a night of greasy hands i just sand the stick a little bit. Give it a little grip.
Thanks for this. I hate the plastic dipped ones as they usually give me blisters. I love regal tip's lacquer best for grip, but Vic Firth is my preferred brand so it's a trade off.
I use Vader stick wraps and they're really RAD, they've got a small cushion to them and they've got a really good feel. I mean I still throw sticks now and then, but not as much and they are a lot more comfortable when I do.......Hahaha Keep up the great work I love your Channel ~Jonny5 🥁
I use double-sided tape wrapped from the fulcrum area all the way to the butt end, applying the tape right before a show or before band rehearsal ... It gives me total control of my sticks so that I can go ballistic on my drum fills without dropping my sticks, and it makes me play tighter. The same wrapping stays on my sticks until the tape wears away or loses its tackiness after a month or so of routine use; and then I gently scrub the residue off with hot water and then I wrap a new strip of double-sided tape around the stick for my next future usage. If there's a time when I don't wanna feel the double-sided tape on my hands, I wrap my sticks with the tape and then I slip a pair of (slit-opened) golf club grips over the taped butt ends from the fulcrum all the way to the butt end. The golf club grips feel bulky and they reduce the weight of my sticks toward the tips... this also gives me control, and I can go crazy with my drum fills. I use the golf club grips on my 5A and 7A sticks.
Wrap sticks with 3M linerless electric splicing tape it's made like a stretchy rubber withholds moisture but may cause major blisters note to self lol it stretches like a mile from just a 6" piece lol. But I now use Vicgrip sticks AMERICAN CLSSIC ROCK wooden tip.
So, does the boiled linseed just reinforce the wood in the stick itself, then? I have a bunch of un-finished maple sticks, and I'd like to strengthen them up so they don't break every few minutes... Or is there something else you would suggest?
I got a pair of zildjain grip sticks and everyone I use them I get massive blisters in like 10 minutes so I've had to by a pair of drum gloves to use when I get blisters because I'm quickly running out of plasters. Would the same thing happen with different brands?
Perhaps a small ring of plastic dip at one, or maybe two spots on the stick near and below the fulcrum. Or a rubber band at that fulcrum spot. .... But why does a drummer need any of this stuff at all?
If you ever play Vic grip sticks you will never go back to plain sticks. It is a water based product, Zildjian also has a line of sticks but they blister my hands.
(un)happy to report that since this vid's posting, Vic Firth CHANGED their sticks' finish, so now have tacky feel! my first reaction: ICK!!, & using nylon scrub pad -brought down to near bare wood! (shame i had to do this w/NEW STICKS...)
Thanks, I was getting ready to buy some sex wax but now I'm just gonna open that can of dip I bought in the first place about a year ago. My bro says its what he used.
You really stepped up your game in 8 years. The production now is on another level x100. The drum sound, the recording, the playing...so much better.
I found that Promark naturals were the best for me.
The only sticks that never slip out of my hands when playing for a long time. :)
You mean to tell me he didn’t use FLEX SEAL!!!
I don't always drop drumsticks...
but when I do
its because I'm dumb
For me it's because i fucked up my stick trick... Normally accompanied by some horrific crash of the stick and myself flying into a set of drums...
that's awesome man! lol except a stick trick for me is more like a stick throw...

Put any wood adhesive in your hand and hold the sticks for 1 hr minimum this will be the best grip ever !!!..

i have used the plasti-dip in can that you dip tool handles in. works pretty good.
Have you tried Flex Seal? (°u° )
Bee Cee And repaired it using only Flex Tape *_12" Flex Tape used on both sides of the boat_*
I use Gorilla Snot™ gripping aid, but its a total bitch to get off your hands when you are done drumming... my computer mouse has a layer of it because of this...
P.S. LOVE the triple meeting shirt.
***** I saw that and was about to buy it, but never did lol. But yeah, I live right by that triple crossing. I've never seen it in person though...
I'm pretty sure that's pine sap based so denatured alcohol will probably take it off of things.
I will try that... Its such a pain to deal with...
i got this as a Christmas gift a few years ago and its great i also put it on my guitar picks (i play drums and guitar)
Gorilla Snot is badass for grip. Plus it smells like pine tar.
I’ve used the clear Plasti-Dip on my sticks and it’s good.

0:20 literally me!
Coming back here as I'm researching stick grip and I'm getting a good laugh out of the most watched part
THAT 8TH NOTE RIDE GROOVE AHH I LOVE IT

1:50 ... I use the same trick for playing some funk and disco stuff... great man, thumbs up for all of your vid !
Try using shellac, that is if you want your sticks to feel like Regal Tip sticks...
Thanks for this. I hate the plastic dipped ones as they usually give me blisters. I love regal tip's lacquer best for grip, but Vic Firth is my preferred brand so it's a trade off.
I’ve done plaster dip before, I’ve never had worse blisters in my life!!
Have you reviewed the ProMark ActiveGrips? I love 'em.
I used to use stick wraps, but you can get tennis wrap at Wal Mart for cheaper. $5 a pack, and it's literally the same thing. I love it.
I use Vader stick wraps and they're really RAD, they've got a small cushion to them and they've got a really good feel. I mean I still throw sticks now and then, but not as much and they are a lot more comfortable when I do.......Hahaha

I just use an old candle. Rub it on the top part of the stick. works great, and smells nice.
I use double-sided tape wrapped from the fulcrum area all the way to the butt end,
applying the tape right before a show or before band rehearsal ... It gives me total control of my sticks so that

Have you ever tried clear Flex Seal?
Use flex seal liquid

Thumbs up for the mpc 2kxl shirt
o my god that miking is spot on amazing mikes 😂
Looks good. Dig the Chris Dave part. Haha
Dave those are some of my favorite hi hats. Why do they sound like crap? Camera audio?
Geoff Boener yep, shitty camera audio
I like to use cloth first-aid tape. First thing I do whenever I buy a new pair of sticks is tape 'em up.
And the reason I use boiled Linseed oil on Guitar necks when I build 'em is because it gives the neck a nice matte finish that is NOT too grippy
So, does the boiled linseed just reinforce the wood in the stick itself, then? I have a bunch of un-finished maple sticks, and I'd like to strengthen them up so they don't break every few minutes... Or is there something else you would suggest?
What about Flex Seal Liquid? The commercial said you could dip your "tools" for a tough no-slip grip.
When I was learning how to play I would just buy rolls of that fiber-y cloth athletic tape and wrap the handles.
nice csx shirt. you a railfan?
In the chris dave part what is that to the right of the snare
Perhaps just a bit of plastic dip around the fulcrum point of the stick. To avoid the extra weight and balance shift. But you don't need this stuff.
I got a pair of zildjain grip sticks and everyone I use them I get massive blisters in like 10 minutes so I've had to by a pair of drum gloves to use when I get blisters because I'm quickly running out of plasters. Would the same thing happen with different brands?

Thank you for this video bro! :)
stickstuff grip is the best!!!!
0:20 Same thing here. Happens with bad aim mostly.
Line x as a grip
hey are you playing Broken Social Scene around 3:00 in this video?
boiled linseed oil is just a finish not really intended for grip more of to seal a dark and shing color into wood almost like dye.
i dont get the grip on drumsticks like everytime i played with dipped sticks i just cant move them around in my hands right
I related so much when you said I'm dumb and I drop sticks so I'm gonna get this plastic dip stuff. Do they sell it in the UK?
I use black electrical tape. Works great. :)
Hey man, where did you got that Mpc-shirt? Looks realy cool! Nice channel btw.
Pomade hair product will do it. Very small amount in hands will do. Never fails.
latomas grip your sticks and keep your pompadour lookin fresh at the same time! haha
I just sand mine with 220 down to natural wood. Good to go.
Hey Dave, why do the hi-hats sound so bad?
You could just duct tape them to your hands.
WHERE DID YOU GET THAT SHIRT!?!?!?
i used surfboard wax with good results

If you ever play Vic grip sticks you will never go back to plain sticks. It is a water based product, Zildjian also has a line of sticks but they blister my hands.

S. EDGE agreed, im lookn forward to tryin the zildjian grips next

FLEX TAPE
i legit got a fucking unskippable 1:16 minute ad
(un)happy to report that since this vid's posting, Vic Firth CHANGED their sticks' finish, so now have tacky feel!
my first reaction: ICK!!, & using nylon scrub pad -brought down to near bare wood! (shame i had to do this w/NEW STICKS...)
I just use candle/skateboard wax

QuintonReviews drum gear
2:07 system of a down - prison song? :)
Make a drum pad
So I just wear gloves. For grip reasons obviously
i used those sticks, and the first times i played with them i got soooo many blisters in my palms lol
I drop sticks, too and I hate it.

Thanks, I was getting ready to buy some sex wax but now I'm just gonna open that can of dip I bought in the first place about a year ago. My bro says its what he used.
Try duct tape :)
Duct tape is terrible
You do some cool stuff and I have learned a lot from you but your audio of you playing drums is painful. Just sayin’
No SEX WAX?
