Danny Gokey: American Idol Finalist Found Purpose in Darkest Moments

The book talks of the beacon of light that is hope, and how to persevere in the time after their darkest days. "People know me from my story," said Gokey, who lost his first wife, Sophia Martinez, to complications following heart surgery for congenital heart disease. He founded Sophia's Heart, a non-profit organization based in Nashville that helps homeless families in crisis get back on their feet. (Last year, 40 families resided in the organization's 70,000-square-foot building.)

I was in Milwaukee when Danny Gokey was on American Idol, and I prayed for him continually. As it was, his church was a mile down the street from my GF's home and I met his two friends, Jamar Rogers and Shawn. I was sitting next to Shawn when Danny came to his church on Friday morning in the 3rd last week of American Idol. There was a large turnout at Summerfest Park where Danny was supposed to sing 4 songs but sang 9. It was after that visit to his hometown that I sensed that Danny told the producers that he didn't want to win...and he was the sure winner.
