jethical b15 games that are known in its own history for having compelling story/single player before multiplayer shouldn't have to hang onto it's multiplayer fans to sustain it's existence. If it's interested only in a New revamped version of multiplayer, why half ass the story in a way that completely subverts everything you knew and liked about the older games that made you love the game in the first place. Seriously if you want to make halo into a battlefield type game, just jump the gun and do that. Instead of trying to add something to the story which every old fan of the game wouldn't appreciate (also because you know, the story with master chief is a major reason why people buy halo in the first place)

I love the story because it was a different from all the other games halo 1 to 3 felt more like saving the galaxy from a world ending threat whereas halo reach and halo 4 felt way more personal and hit closer to home not to mention that they gave way more depth to the unsc who in the original games were more or less just a badass military faction trying to save the world but in halo 4 And reach they made them out to be brutal ineffective government that stomps all over those they claim to protect.

All of my friends loved this game's story somehow, while I was sitting there thinking to myself "Why?". Of course, every time I spoke up to them, they simply said I hate everything, which is kinda true since a lot of modern games are really lacking what I enjoy, but that's besides the point. Hell I even got the game for free from one of them, and I still felt like I got ripped off. This video showcases things I disliked about it, and even showed me some things I haven't even thought about, like removing the feeling that you were Chief, and how he responds in game. First Halo I played was Halo 3 at a friends, maybe a year or two before Reach was released. I'll never forget (heh) how amazing it was when I first played it. Then Reach came out, and custom games in Reach are some of the greatest multiplayer memories I have to this day. And the music is amazing, in all of the Halo games, excluding 4 and 5 of course. I agree that it is terrible, but boy did Halo 5 kinda take the trophy for the worst one. Honestly, I went back to 4 after playing through 5, and I appreciate it more lol. Halo 5 feels like a generic fan made game that uses 'modern' gameplay that had a bigger budget than usual. The multiplayer was decent, but only in infection and what not with friends. It seems to me that with it's updated playstyle, Halo 5 attracted a lot of the worst from other game titles, so I simply avoided it the best I could
I’ve played halo two and three and I can honestly say that halo four isn’t that bad. Sure the diehard halo fans yes most diehard halo fans that I’ve met said hello for was a horrible game and I can honestly see why it does take quite a bit away from master chief but it is fun to play at least for me. Halo 4 Reflow is a major game changer in how I view Halo 4. I am disappointed the developers didn't do the simple fixes that Reflow did.
Lol 6 years later I’m glad I’m not the only one who 100% hates this game. I’ve always tried to explain to people that Master Chief’s personality underwent a time skip; the issue is that he was asleep during the time skip so he should have woken up the same guy that went to sleep at the end of H3. Plus, go rewatch the H2 & H3 campaigns and tell me that his body language doesn’t communicate and articulate ALL the emotions and thoughts going on in there.
I hate 4. I just played it because it was in the MCC on PC and I tried to give it a fair chance, but Master Chief being a chatty Kathy is unbearable. The writing feels like an edgy tween’s shitty fanfiction. Only difference is there’s no outright sex scene with Cortana and Chief. It’s all so awkward and terrible. The music is bad, the story is bad, gameplay is weird, weapons suck, new grenade sucks, sound design is traaaaaaash. I hate everything about it. I can’t think of anything I like. Spartan Ops as a concept maybe, but in how it was done it’s pretty lame.
And omg the way the Covenant look and sound suuuuuucks. Grunts and Jackals look like Crogans. Krogan? However you spell it. It’s disgusting. And the Elites are so devoid of personality I didn’t even realize they were Elites for awhile. The lack of their personality is ridiculous. I don't hate halo 4 but.. Damn I really also find the cortana chief bye scene to be weird... The cortana chief relationship felt forced to me, and you basically said my thoughts! And yeah campaign gameplay wise, I felt that Halo 4 was boring.
Everything you've said about Halo 4 is this video is correct. Halo 4 is the first Halo game that didn't 'feel' like Halo. It's comes across a depressing, introspective, cold and lifeless experience. It also has an ambition to psychologically and analytically manipulate, but it fails. There's was no sense of mystery, no sense of wonder and no sense of fun. Character personalities have changed, general attitudes have been altered (the lack of respect the UNSC Infinity shows towards the Master Chief, despite saving mankind and the galaxy) and everything feels forced and hacked on. Like you, I was in denial about Halo 4. Up until Halo 4, I had never criticized any Halo game (it was also because I was still traumatized at the time by the ending Mass Effect 3 which single-handily almost ruined the franchise, so Halo 4 seemed excellent in comparison). Everything about Halo 4 was wrong: the story, the art design, the music, the characters, the multiplayer, etc. 'Humanizing' the Master Chief breaks the suspension of disbelief and forces us to accept him a fully developed character. Nobody wants to know who the Chief is, they want to 'be' the Chief. That's right, the Master Chief is really the player. 343 believes that they are being clever and innovative by forcibly 'fleshing' out characters and installing a space opera like moral compasses, but it fails Another problem was that there was nothing at stake in Halo 4. In the original game, you really felt that you were Mankind's last hope. Humans were facing the very possibility of total extinction at the hands of a mysterious fellowship of alien races banding together under a religious extremist ideology. As a result there was a real sense of responsibility on your shoulders. If you died, Humankind would die along with you. Halo 4 ruined the mystery of the Forerunners. It was originally left up to the imagination of the player for what the Forerunners looked like (before Halo 4, it was widely implied that Forerunners were Humanity's ancestors rather than a separate race). Now 343 tells us that ancient humans had an interstellar empire (this ruins the established lore in the previous games) and that Master Chief is the 'chosen one' because he has a special genetic code ('geas') in his system. Mantle of Responsibility? Is 343 trying to turn Halo into a science fantasy? This is incredibly painful to witness. The whole 'read the books' argument is not an excuse, the books should not anything to do with the actual games themselves. The novels by Bungie were good but they were more like filler rather than canon. Bungie left it up to imagination of the player to figure what happens next. As a result the result, the Bungie-era games had firmly standalone story-lines. I've done my research and I've discovered that 343i have deliberately ignored much of the well established lore in the previous Bungie-era games, and are revising it into something of their own image. They're just making up shit as they go along. Thank you for having the courage to speak the truth about Halo 4, you'll be surprised at how many 343i apologists and supporters are out there. I don't think i need to go into detail about the multiplayer, it's simply been 'CODified'. Though I believe Halo will be great again; a sequel set many years in the future, ignoring 343i's debasement could possibly do the trick, or maybe a reboot of the franchise that's done correctly. I'm actually got a small amount of hope that Halo 5 will fail and 343 can quickly get the boot so another, more worthy develop can take up the position.

I liked the older books. Fall of Reach, The Flood, the one that takes place in between Halo 1 & 2 (First Strike or something I forget), Ghosts of Onyx. You didn't have to read them to understand the games. They just expanded the story of the games if you were interested. I'm not so sure what the newer books are like though. But clearly you need to have a basic understanding of them to get what's going on in Halo 4 & 5. Which is pretty lame.

I also remember it just being a segway to the main story and it having very, VERY little to do with everything else. I'm fine with the books being segways into the story. Yeah especially the elites. They were extremely dangerous in halo 1/2 on legendary but in 4 they were worse versions of brutes. Easily killable and boring to fight.

I'm currently working on a Halo 4 Analysis and looked to see another in-depth look at the game. I think the video could've been cut-down and that some points are very subjective and negligible such as Cortana's face and Chief's armor, but I'm sure you're aware of it since you mentioned it in the latter. I'm happy to see you highlighted the downgraded AI and the repetitive strategy used to take down the Prometheans. I have to disagree on the usage Chief's voice during gameplay, as I've always felt a disconnect when a character reacts during cutscenes, but not gameplay. And I don't agree with Cortana's personality, as I think they did a great job at showing her trying to retain her sassy lighthearted banter while dealing with severe rampancy. I didn't care for your occasionally immature writing, like suggesting that Cortana touching Chief's comes across has wanting to make purple babies. Exaggeration is fun, but in an analysis that's meant to make objective points, it comes across as silly and juvenile; but I still enjoyed your breakdown overall and felt most of your points had merit, even if I have a different opinion of the game.
I love your "Halo X amount of years later" videos. I made this video like... 2 years ago now? There's a lot I'd trim up and change if I were to remake it now, but none of my views on 343's execution of these games has changed within that time. Thank you so much for this. I am a newer fan of the halo series after purchasing an xbone (I was a playstation fan growing up). I absolutely loved 1-3, so much so that I consider them some of the best games of all time. The way halo 3 ended was PERFECT. One of the best endings I’ve honestly ever experienced in gaming. I went into 4 and was shocked at just how terrible and different everything felt. It didn’t feel like halo at all. The presentation of the story was TERRIBLE! I was so confused in the first hour what on earth was going on. The sappy love story between Cortana and chief felt so forced. I hated it so much. Halo 5 was terrible as well, but 4 rubbed me the worst for some reason. Just an awful extension of the series.

I cried at the end, but it wasn't because of Cortana nor that she can touch chief; it's that chief is in denial that Cortana is dying and the way he stutters. Chief is only human around Cortana. Then came him and Lasky having a discussion about Cortana's death, but chief sees himself as a war machine. Lasky disagrees. When Lasky said, "You say that like humanity and soldiers are two different things. Soldiers aren't machines. We're just people." That is what put me in tears. Why? Because chief always thought himself as a machine like I said; taken away from his home and family.
Master Chief literally never thought of himself as anything 343 created. Master Chief considers himself nothing more than a soldier; especially, one faithful to the defense of the human race.

halo 4 was truly a huge disappointment at the time it came out, playing the campaign for the first time was only exciting for a few minutes till I realized what was happening. Cortana was really unlikable and annoying, Chief was getting knocked out and causing problems rather than fixing them, The UNSC treated him like shit for no reason despite him saving the universe a few times, I can go on and on. The multiplayer was no better either, it felt like reach but with dead space armor looking spartans and some new weapons and vehicles mixed with the awful colors and environments that did not come close to the original halo aesthetic. Custom games barely existed too, and anyone that played halo 4 mostly went back to reach a few days later since it was that bad. In comparison, Reach was controversial, but when we realized what we lost and took a look at how awful halo 4 was. Today I notice alot of people now love reach just as much as Halo 3. But no ever talks about 4 or even 5.
343 fuckd up the whole Thing imo.the story was so unbelievably epic i loved it nothing goes over halo 1-3 and i say this as a PS guy. Bungie came up with that crazy future space Superhuman soldier thing, gigantic superweapon ring worlds that are created by human-like, Ultra-advanced elder beings which can wipe out the entire galaxy on purpose, the whole thing was surrounded by that serious, epic mysterious feeling and 343 just idk made it feel boring from 4 on. I played 4 myself and can understand the things you say.the reason i sadly lost interest in the series. For me, sadly, halo 4- until now ist not canon for me and i refuse to See the didact as canon nor the shitty prometheans. I will say that what 343 was able to do graphically and performance wise with Halo 4 on the Xbox 360 was a technical feat unparalleled in that console generation. It looks fantastic, and even if the art style might have strayed a bit too far from previous entries for my liking, you can't deny that it's a beautiful looking game. The fact that it runs smoothly on that 7 year old hardware at the time is even better.
Halo 4 was basically just another fps that a BRAND NEW game studio thought they could call a Halo game just because they put Master Chief and Cortana in there. 1. Chief talks WAY too much. 2. Cortana’s design was fugly. 3. Gameplay was boring and monotonous. Shoot this, shoot that, stand in front of this thing and press X, “oh no something went wrong”, repeat. And before anyone says ThAt’S wHaT hALo iS, no it wasn’t. Each installment up to this point in the series gave the player more tools and strategies with each increasing difficulty setting. Halo 4 was just a shooting gallery whilst ammo rationing. 4. “Here’s a new weapon! Cool huh? Look how it shoots...you’re almost empty now so good luck finding ammo!”. 343 NERFED every classic Halo weapon and made their new weapons the most available. Personally, I find that insulting. 5. Replace the Gravemind/Flood with these TRON rejects and boom; Halo 4’s entire story. Also Cortana is dying along with our attention span for it. 6. Checkpoints are too random. They would be fairly consistent in past Halo’s, however, had some leeway depending on enemies, Yet, most of Halo 4’s levels had checkpoints that would start you WAY back after all the work you’ve put into that attempt. Made my sessions exponentially shorter than all previous Halo’s. Basically, I’m never playing this again. It’s been over 10 years since it’s been out and it’s faded into obscurity. Thank Christ cuz 343 deserves it. They had the balls to put that cheeky message at the end “Thanks for trusting us with the universe you love”. Excuse me, you TOOK it and couldn’t rise to the occasion. Halo has met with the same fate as Disney Star Wars. I hate that I have to see Halo 4 in the menu of my MCC. Anyway this comment was as pointless as this game. EDIT: I just beat halo 4 last night and the scene cuts right before you see Master Chief’s eyes... 343 must’ve gotten enough complaints about that and went “special edition” on us lol

It’s annoying when people both say “oh halo 4 is closer to the book lore, & games need sprint. It’s time halo caught up with the times.”. 2 things: I didn’t fall in love with the book lore, I fell in love with Bungies story/lore. So screw the books. And secondly, if you think sprint is a mechanic that all games need to be modernized or be on par with other triple A games... then you never understood what made halo gameplay good... and you probably don’t understand good game design. The whole Cortana thing.... remember in halo 3 when you lose her? You go in search of her on the flood infested high charity in search of her She had the index - getting Cortana back was just the icing on the cake you were after the index to the halo not Cortana herself per se But they made you feel her absence and it felt that much more powerful getting reunited with your companion. You felt alone and lost without her guidance and support. On a side note those "visions" of her getting "tortured" really ruined that feeling of isolation and no I don't care if there's a reason for it or a passage in the fucking bible you should have been completely cut off and isolated from any contact to nail that feeling home. It's equally as dumb as the jerkoff from halo 4 have telekinesis. In my headcannon I just treat the visions as expositions for babies who would be confused without.

Don't get me wrong, Halo 4 was my least favorite Halo game at the time it released and in my mind Chief is still floating through space on the Forward Unto Dawn, but, I will say. it wasn't just for the sake of it. For all of his arrogance he puts on in insulting 343 personnel for "not knowing what's in the books" he really really doesn't know what's in the books or the lore that was established even while Bungie was in control of things. Read Fall of Reach and Cortana's behavior and appearance all make sense. Cortana chooses her own appearance, and because she is just a digital image, her changing her appearance can happen in the blink of an eye. So the fact she changes isn't a problem at all, but it leads us to why would she change? The books make that obvious too. As AIs accumulate more and more knowledge and begin their descent into Rampancy they often have a desire to become mortal. They want to experience life and feel things. Something they can never do. As Cortana reaches these phases, she changes her appearance to be more appealing to Chief and her dialogue and interaction takes on a more romantic nuance instead of one of comradery. Him saying that Halo 4 started this and ruined the character is nonsense. Bungie started this character arc in Halo 3 where Cortana already begins to address Chief in more human ways and her relationship with him takes on a more romantic feel. Johnson's dying command to Chief is to never let Cortana go. If Bungie really thought their relationship was purely that of a super soldier to and artificial intelligence, there is no way that Sgt. Johnson would give a rip about Chief losing her. Their dynamic in Halo 4 is a natural progression of what was already started. The interaction between master chief and Cortana was the one thing I thought Halo 4 got right. I strongly disliked the enemies and gameplay, as well as the Didact and final chapter of the game. They were atrocious. But the interactions between Chief and Cortana were spot on and adhered very closely to the groundwork laid by Bungie in Halo 3 and expanded on in the books. And personally, maybe it's because I am one of those people that did read the books and love them to death, I greatly appreciated Chief's increased dialogue. I don't play Halo to go on a power fantasy trip BS. People who want to play games to have a power fantasy to me don't seem emotionally stable or developed. Something has gone wrong emotionally somewhere in their life for them to find fulfillment in that. I play a game because I want to experience a story with a hands on connection that makes me feel for the characters more. I could never be a bad ass space warrior that looks death in the face and doesn't blink. Having Chief be mute so I can somehow pretend I am him is ridiculous. If he talks in cutscenes, he should talk during gameplay. It has to be all one or the other. Take Skyrim for example. Your character is mute AND you get to choose dialogue options. I ran up to him but I couldn't notice him because A) he was just standing there looking past me and B) his model was hard to notice against the background. That little encounter gave me the impression that the Elite AI has been dumbed down and whaddya know?
I haven't gotten into your video yet, but I just want to say that the reason I hate Halo 4 so much, and the reason I find it damn near unplayable even today, is down to the balancing. This game has some of the worst balancing I've ever seen. I tried replaying it recently, thinking I had maybe given it a bad rap. It's terrible. Heroic difficulty feels like a slog through a romhack. They ruined the plasma pistol by making it cost 2 ammo to fire it ONE TIME. So now those plasma pistol drops you get from grunts are only good for a handful of shots. A lot of enemies carry hitscan weapons now, so damage is unavoidable. A lot of enemies that don't carry hitscan weapons will carry some kind of explosive or very damaging weapon. The level design is built to help the enemy and not you. Tons of very open spaces where enemies that can crawl on walls, fly or teleport will rush you. You don't have much cover and there's usually something in the back of the map trying to snipe you while you fight other enemies. I'm not the only one who feels like you're pretty well required to always have a battle rifle in at least one of your slots. The game is stingy as FUCK with ammo, too. A lot of guns lie with their ammo counters. The Light Rifle says it carries 100-something rounds, but every shot requires 3 rounds IIRC. So take that number and cut that into a third. That's your MAX ammo you can carry with a Light Rifle. A Covenant Carbine, on the other hand, can carry 72 + the full mag. But covvie carbines aren't as common as forerunner weapons by half. I ended up passing a lot of areas by camping near gun caches, because I just didn't have enough ammo to kill shit. A lot of mid-range and close-range weapons are just trash because of the level design. I love the Suppressor to death, and it's one of the only guns I feel you get a good max ammo amount for, but the damn thing is always outranged by enemies due to the level design + lack of cover. You can forget about using shotguns entirely. Even if you can get close enough, the damage isn't high enough to overcome how much damage enemies can tank. Well, not when you're fighting more than one at a time. Yes, the story is bad. But I just wanted to rant a bit and say that I can live with a bad story. I think 343 fundamentally ruined a lot of the way that Halo works when all its systems are in place properly. Even in so-called "open" maps in Halo 1 and 2, the on-foot combat sections typically involved small arenas with a lot of cover. Or large arenas with a lot of cover, so you could force engagements on your terms.
I completely agree with pretty much everything you said, except one thing. Just because they made Cortana 'sexy' does not make them sexist. Sexism is prejudice on the basis of sex. Having a woman that has sex appeal is not sexist.

Master chief is supposed to be THE last Spartan, THE most elite soldier bred from the military, taught never to quit, do or die on the battle field, tactically and mentally trained to face any obstacle. Almost never spoke in the other games because, he doesn't have an opinion, he's told to take a base and kill everything to stop a bomb going off, he'll do so without even so much as a grunt while he beats his enemy to a pulp with his fist. This kind of badass who doesn't see his military companions with emotional connection especially sexual. Even the guy that dies in 3 that was in all previous games you didn't hear chief say "hold on old buddy, helps on the way." through tears. But now you're telling me while he was unconscious for like 4 years he fell in love with cortana? A computer program caught the heart of a ruthless warrior who showed literally no emotion any other time on screen... yet you think this spontaneous relationship is somehow beautiful when it has not reason behind it's development? Are you forgetting that in halo 2 you leave her and have to save her in halo 3? There was no heart wrenching tear between the two. But now it's "you can't believe how long I've waited to touch you chief."... wtf... beautiful?
The thing i like the most of halo 4 is that he talks, not that boring silent protagonist of past games (just for you know... i played all the games before it and loved them) but I love that master chief expresses his thoughts and emotions. For me, this adds to the story a lot.

All of my friends loved this game's story somehow, while I was sitting there thinking to myself "Why?". Of course, every time I spoke up to them, they simply said I hate everything, which is kinda true since a lot of modern games are really lacking what I enjoy, but that's besides the point. Hell I even got the game for free from one of them, and I still felt like I got ripped off. This video showcases things I disliked about it, and even showed me some things I haven't even thought about, like removing the feeling that you were Chief, and how he responds in game.
First Halo I played was Halo 3 at a friends, maybe a year or two before Reach was released. I'll never forget (heh) how amazing it was when I first played it. Then Reach came out, and custom games in Reach are some of the greatest multiplayer memories I have to this day. And the music is amazing, in all of the Halo games, excluding 4 and 5 of course.
I agree that it is terrible, but boy did Halo 5 kinda take the trophy for the worst one. Honestly, I went back to 4 after playing through 5, and I appreciate it more lol. Halo 5 feels like a generic fan made game that uses 'modern' gameplay that had a bigger budget than usual. The multiplayer was decent, but only in infection and what not with friends. It seems to me that with it's updated playstyle, Halo 5 attracted a lot of the worst from other game titles, so I simply avoided it the best I could

Halo 4 Reflow is a major game changer in how I view Halo 4. I am disappointed the developers didn't do the simple fixes that Reflow did.
Lol 6 years later I’m glad I’m not the only one who 100% hates this game. I’ve always tried to explain to people that Master Chief’s personality underwent a time skip; the issue is that he was asleep during the time skip so he should have woken up the same guy that went to sleep at the end of H3.
Plus, go rewatch the H2 & H3 campaigns and tell me that his body language doesn’t communicate and articulate ALL the emotions and thoughts going on in there.

Everything you've said about Halo 4 is this video is correct.
Halo 4 is the first Halo game that didn't 'feel' like Halo. It's comes across a depressing, introspective, cold and lifeless experience. It also has an ambition to psychologically and analytically manipulate, but it fails. There's was no sense of mystery, no sense of wonder and no sense of fun. Character personalities have changed, general attitudes have been altered (the lack of respect the UNSC Infinity shows towards the Master Chief, despite saving mankind and the galaxy) and everything feels forced and hacked on.
Like you, I was in denial about Halo 4. Up until Halo 4, I had never criticized any Halo game (it was also because I was still traumatized at the time by the ending Mass Effect 3 which single-handily almost ruined the franchise, so Halo 4 seemed excellent in comparison).
Everything about Halo 4 was wrong: the story, the art design, the music, the characters, the multiplayer, etc. 'Humanizing' the Master Chief breaks the suspension of disbelief and forces us to accept him a fully developed character. Nobody wants to know who the Chief is, they want to 'be' the Chief. That's right, the Master Chief is really the player. 343 believes that they are being clever and innovative by forcibly 'fleshing' out characters and installing a space opera like moral compasses, but it fails
Another problem was that there was nothing at stake in Halo 4. In the original game, you really felt that you were Mankind's last hope. Humans were facing the very possibility of total extinction at the hands of a mysterious fellowship of alien races banding together under a religious extremist ideology. As a result there was a real sense of responsibility on your shoulders. If you died, Humankind would die along with you.
Halo 4 ruined the mystery of the Forerunners. It was originally left up to the imagination of the player for what the Forerunners looked like (before Halo 4, it was widely implied that Forerunners were Humanity's ancestors rather than a separate race). Now 343 tells us that ancient humans had an interstellar empire (this ruins the established lore in the previous games) and that Master Chief is the 'chosen one' because he has a special genetic code ('geas') in his system. Mantle of Responsibility? Is 343 trying to turn Halo into a science fantasy? This is incredibly painful to witness.
The whole 'read the books' argument is not an excuse, the books should not anything to do with the actual games themselves.
The novels by Bungie were good but they were more like filler rather than canon. Bungie left it up to imagination of the player to figure what happens next. As a result the result, the Bungie-era games had firmly standalone story-lines.
I've done my research and I've discovered that 343i have deliberately ignored much of the well established lore in the previous Bungie-era games, and are revising it into something of their own image. They're just making up shit as they go along.
Thank you for having the courage to speak the truth about Halo 4, you'll be surprised at how many 343i apologists and supporters are out there.
I don't think i need to go into detail about the multiplayer, it's simply been 'CODified'.
Though I believe Halo will be great again; a sequel set many years in the future, ignoring 343i's debasement could possibly do the trick, or maybe a reboot of the franchise that's done correctly. I'm actually got a small amount of hope that Halo 5 will fail and 343 can quickly get the boot so another, more worthy develop can take up the position.

I liked the older books. Fall of Reach, The Flood, the one that takes place in between Halo 1 & 2 (First Strike or something I forget), Ghosts of Onyx. You didn't have to read them to understand the games. They just expanded the story of the games if you were interested. I'm not so sure what the newer books are like though. But clearly you need to have a basic understanding of them to get what's going on in Halo 4 & 5. Which is pretty lame.

Yeah especially the elites. They were extremely dangerous in halo 1/2 on legendary but in 4 they were worse versions of brutes. Easily killable and boring to fight.

I'm currently working on a Halo 4 Analysis and looked to see another in-depth look at the game. I think the video could've been cut-down and that some points are very subjective and negligible such as Cortana's face and Chief's armor, but I'm sure you're aware of it since you mentioned it in the latter. I'm happy to see you highlighted the downgraded AI and the repetitive strategy used to take down the Prometheans. I have to disagree on the usage Chief's voice during gameplay, as I've always felt a disconnect when a character reacts during cutscenes, but not gameplay. And I don't agree with Cortana's personality, as I think they did a great job at showing her trying to retain her sassy lighthearted banter while dealing with severe rampancy.
I didn't care for your occasionally immature writing, like suggesting that Cortana touching Chief's comes across has wanting to make purple babies. Exaggeration is fun, but in an analysis that's meant to make objective points, it comes across as silly and juvenile; but I still enjoyed your breakdown overall and felt most of your points had merit, even if I have a different opinion of the game.

Thank you so much for this. I am a newer fan of the halo series after purchasing an xbone (I was a playstation fan growing up). I absolutely loved 1-3, so much so that I consider them some of the best games of all time. The way halo 3 ended was PERFECT. One of the best endings I’ve honestly ever experienced in gaming.
I went into 4 and was shocked at just how terrible and different everything felt. It didn’t feel like halo at all. The presentation of the story was TERRIBLE! I was so confused in the first hour what on earth was going on. The sappy love story between Cortana and chief felt so forced. I hated it so much. Halo 5 was terrible as well, but 4 rubbed me the worst for some reason. Just an awful extension of the series.

I cried at the end, but it wasn't because of Cortana nor that she can touch chief; it's that chief is in denial that Cortana is dying and the way he stutters. Chief is only human around Cortana. Then came him and Lasky having a discussion about Cortana's death, but chief sees himself as a war machine. Lasky disagrees. halo 4 was truly a huge disappointment at the time it came out, playing the campaign for the first time was only exciting for a few minutes till I realized what was happening. Cortana was really unlikable and annoying, Chief was getting knocked out and causing problems rather than fixing them, The UNSC treated him like shit for no reason despite him saving the universe a few times, I can go on and on. The multiplayer was no better either, it felt like reach but with dead space armor looking spartans and some new weapons and vehicles mixed with the awful colors and environments that did not come close to the original halo aesthetic. Custom games barely existed too, and anyone that played halo 4 mostly went back to reach a few days later since it was that bad. In comparison, Reach was controversial, but when we realized what we lost and took a look at how awful halo 4 was. Today I notice alot of people now love reach just as much as Halo 3. But no ever talks about 4 or even 5.

Bungie came up with that crazy future space Superhuman soldier thing, gigantic superweapon ring worlds that are created by human-like, Ultra-advanced elder beings which can wipe out the entire galaxy on purpose, the whole thing was surrounded by that serious, epic mysterious feeling and 343 just idk made it feel boring from 4 on. I played 4 myself and can understand the things you say.the reason i sadly lost interest in the series. For me, sadly, halo 4- until now ist not canon for me and i refuse to See the didact as canon nor the shitty prometheans.

I will say that what 343 was able to do graphically and performance wise with Halo 4 on the Xbox 360 was a technical feat unparalleled in that console generation. It looks fantastic, and even if the art style might have strayed a bit too far from previous entries for my liking, you can't deny that it's a beautiful looking game. The fact that it runs smoothly on that 7 year old hardware at the time is even better.

Halo 4 was basically just another fps that a BRAND NEW game studio thought they could call a Halo game just because they put Master Chief and Cortana in there.
1. Chief talks WAY too much.
2. Cortana’s design was fugly.
3. Gameplay was boring and monotonous. Shoot this, shoot that, stand in front of this thing and press X, “oh no something went wrong”, repeat.
And before anyone says ThAt’S wHaT hALo iS, no it wasn’t. Each installment up to this point in the series gave the player more tools and strategies with each increasing difficulty setting. Halo 4 was just a shooting gallery whilst ammo rationing.
4. “Here’s a new weapon! Cool huh? Look how it shoots...you’re almost empty now so good luck finding ammo!”. 343 NERFED every classic Halo weapon and made their new weapons the most available. Personally, I find that insulting.
5. Replace the Gravemind/Flood with these TRON rejects and boom; Halo 4’s entire story. Also Cortana is dying along with our attention span for it.
6. Checkpoints are too random. They would be fairly consistent in past Halo’s, however, had some leeway depending on enemies, Yet, most of Halo 4’s levels had checkpoints that would start you WAY back after all the work you’ve put into that attempt. Made my sessions exponentially shorter than all previous Halo’s.
Basically, I’m never playing this again. It’s been over 10 years since it’s been out and it’s faded into obscurity. Thank Christ cuz 343 deserves it. They had the balls to put that cheeky message at the end “Thanks for trusting us with the universe you love”. Excuse me, you TOOK it and couldn’t rise to the occasion. Halo has met with the same fate as Disney Star Wars.

The whole Cortana thing.... remember in halo 3 when you lose her? You go in search of her on the flood infested high charity in search of her
She had the index - getting Cortana back was just the icing on the cake you were after the index to the halo not Cortana herself per se
But they made you feel her absence and it felt that much more powerful getting reunited with your companion. You felt alone and lost without her guidance and support.
On a side note those "visions" of her getting "tortured" really ruined that feeling of isolation and no I don't care if there's a reason for it or a passage in the fucking bible you should have been completely cut off and isolated from any contact to nail that feeling home. It's equally as dumb as the jerkoff from halo 4 have telekinesis. In my headcannon I just treat the visions as expositions for babies who would be confused without.
Or the visions were for first time players like halo 3 was my first halo game and I would have no clue who she was if there weren’t any visions.

Don't get me wrong, Halo 4 was my least favorite Halo game at the time it released and in my mind Chief is still floating through space on the Forward Unto Dawn, but, I will say. it wasn't just for the sake of it. For all of his arrogance he puts on in insulting 343 personnel for "not knowing what's in the books" he really really doesn't know what's in the books or the lore that was established even while Bungie was in control of things. Read Fall of Reach and Cortana's behavior and appearance all make sense. Cortana chooses her own appearance, and because she is just a digital image, her changing her appearance can happen in the blink of an eye. So the fact she changes isn't a problem at all, but it leads us to why would she change?
The books make that obvious too. As AIs accumulate more and more knowledge and begin their descent into Rampancy they often have a desire to become mortal. They want to experience life and feel things. Something they can never do. As Cortana reaches these phases, she changes her appearance to be more appealing to Chief and her dialogue and interaction takes on a more romantic nuance instead of one of comradery. Him saying that Halo 4 started this and ruined the character is nonsense. Bungie started this character arc in Halo 3 where Cortana already begins to address Chief in more human ways and her relationship with him takes on a more romantic feel. Johnson's dying command to Chief is to never let Cortana go. If Bungie really thought their relationship was purely that of a super soldier to and artificial intelligence, there is no way that Sgt. Johnson would give a rip about Chief losing her. Their dynamic in Halo 4 is a natural progression of what was already started. The interaction between master chief and Cortana was the one thing I thought Halo 4 got right. I strongly disliked the enemies and gameplay, as well as the Didact and final chapter of the game. They were atrocious. But the interactions between Chief and Cortana were spot on and adhered very closely to the groundwork laid by Bungie in Halo 3 and expanded on in the books. And personally, maybe it's because I am one of those people that did read the books and love them to death, I greatly appreciated Chief's increased dialogue. I don't play Halo to go on a power fantasy trip BS.
People who want to play games to have a power fantasy to me don't seem emotionally stable or developed. Something has gone wrong emotionally somewhere in their life for them to find fulfillment in that. I play a game because I want to experience a story with a hands on connection that makes me feel for the characters more. I could never be a bad ass space warrior that looks death in the face and doesn't blink. Having Chief be mute so I can somehow pretend I am him is ridiculous. If he talks in cutscenes, he should talk during gameplay. It has to be all one or the other. Take Skyrim for example. Your character is mute AND you get to choose dialogue options. This is how you achieve immersion. I get to pick what I say and imagine the tone of voice I'm using when I say it. Having a silent protagonist that is on rails and still talks in cutscenes accomplishes nothing. @@omarsabir1210

I ran up to him but I couldn't notice him because A) he was just standing there looking past me and B) his model was hard to notice against the background. That little encounter gave me the impression that the Elite AI has been dumbed down and whaddya know?
I haven't gotten into your video yet, but I just want to say that the reason I hate Halo 4 so much, and the reason I find it damn near unplayable even today, is down to the balancing.
This game has some of the worst balancing I've ever seen. I tried replaying it recently, thinking I had maybe given it a bad rap. It's terrible. Heroic difficulty feels like a slog through a romhack. They ruined the plasma pistol by making it cost 2 ammo to fire it ONE TIME. So now those plasma pistol drops you get from grunts are only good for a handful of shots. A lot of enemies carry hitscan weapons now, so damage is unavoidable. A lot of enemies that don't carry hitscan weapons will carry some kind of explosive or very damaging weapon.
The level design is built to help the enemy and not you. Tons of very open spaces where enemies that can crawl on walls, fly or teleport will rush you. You don't have much cover and there's usually something in the back of the map trying to snipe you while you fight other enemies. I'm not the only one who feels like you're pretty well required to always have a battle rifle in at least one of your slots.
The game is stingy as FUCK with ammo, too. A lot of guns lie with their ammo counters. The Light Rifle says it carries 100-something rounds, but every shot requires 3 rounds IIRC. So take that number and cut that into a third. That's your MAX ammo you can carry with a Light Rifle. A Covenant Carbine, on the other hand, can carry 72 + the full mag. But covvie carbines aren't as common as forerunner weapons by half. I ended up passing a lot of areas by camping near gun caches, because I just didn't have enough ammo to kill shit.
A lot of mid-range and close-range weapons are just trash because of the level design. I love the Suppressor to death, and it's one of the only guns I feel you get a good max ammo amount for, but the damn thing is always outranged by enemies due to the level design + lack of cover. You can forget about using shotguns entirely. Even if you can get close enough, the damage isn't high enough to overcome how much damage enemies can tank. Well, not when you're fighting more than one at a time.
Yes, the story is bad. But I just wanted to rant a bit and say that I can live with a bad story. I think 343 fundamentally ruined a lot of the way that Halo works when all its systems are in place properly. Even in so-called "open" maps in Halo 1 and 2, the on-foot combat sections typically involved small arenas with a lot of cover. Or large arenas with a lot of cover, so you could force engagements on your terms.
You forgot about the flying Promethean saucers that respawn those Promethean knights, hooooow I hated playing Halo 4.

The thing i like the most of halo 4 is that he talks, not that boring silent protagonist of past games (just for you know... i played all the games before it and loved them) but I love that master chief expresses his thoughts and emotions. For me, this adds to the story a lot.
