The EU helped a lot but it's not the main factor of Poland's development. Look at Poland, then look at Bulgaria, both are in the EU for quite some time. Poland is getting richer and richer and is already ahead of Greece and Portugal in terms of quality of life and salary rate. Whereas, Bulgaria is stuck in the 2010's.
It is important to start a conversation about Poland with Tomasz Gross's book "Golden Harvest" because it provides valuable insights into polish character.
