Amen! 😊 So many things that I would buy with my Mother we can't. I also do a no Spending Week. I have $5.00 in my purse and I use it when I buy something in The Canteen. I've gone for months without buying from Amazon but my biggest weakness is Dollartype Stores and Five Below.

Get your holiday decorations at thrift stores and then donate them back when you're done. Get new ones at thrift stores the following year. If people would stop buying all this cheap junk, they would stop producing so much of it. No one needs another sign from Target that says "Gather" or "It's Fall, Y'all." You can get high quality vintage decorations at thrift stores for next to nothing. They might actually have some value, unlike the cheap mass-produced garbage. You can also find brand-new or barely used things for pennies.

School counselor here: I highly recommend concurrent enrollment over AP classes! So often students do not pass the AP exam and then do not meet the requirements for college credits. Also, make sure the college classes you are taking will transfer over to the college you are interested in 😂

I agree about the transfer credits. I was the first in our family to go to college and my mom paid $200 per AP class my senior year only to find they didn't transfer to my college. We were on food stamps so I know it was a huge sacrifice to pay for those and it was an emotional and financial hit.

Here are some things my wife and I do to save money:
    Coffee:
I make my coffee at home. Here's why... Let's be optimistic and say I only spend $3 per day / five days a week on coffee at the coffee shop. That's $15 per week for coffee shop coffee. I can purchase a 3 pound bag of whole bean coffee on sale for $15. I actually drink a whole pot of coffee by myself everyday, seven days a week, and that 3 pound bag lasts about four weeks.
The cost of the coffee shop coffee is an optimistic $60 per month (that's really optimistic).
The actual cost of fresh ground coffee every morning is $15 per month.
    Food:
Also, I'm Irish, and my wife is Asian. We save lots of money because we eat rice or potatoes everyday.
Cook at home. Well seasoned simple food made with fresh ingredients tastes better than what you can get at a restaurant these days.
    Buy your food on sale
    Car:
My wife puts less than 5000 miles per year on her car working from home. This saves money two ways. 1. Her car is emissions exempt. 2. Our car insurance gives you a discount for putting less than 5000 miles per year on the car.
No special trips. Plan a route and get all your errands done in one trip.
    Buy gasoline at Costco
Don't buy the top of the line model, limited edition, sport version, etc. Buy the one that they made a million of and it will be cheaper and more reliable.
This one is debatable, but I don't wash my cars anymore, and I have't washed them in over 15 years. I no longer buy car care products to wash/wax my cars. I live in the rust belt, and I discovered that the factory rust proofing they put on the car/truck/van when it is going down the assembly line is the best rust proofing money can buy. I found Toyota, Honda and Subaru have some of the best factory rust proofing. Everything else rusts out no matter how much I wash and wax it. I spent a lot of money on my Chevrolets, Fords, Chryslers, and Plymouths only to have them rust out. I never spent a dime washing/waxing our Japanese cars, and they are holding up great even after 10 years of sitting outside, parked on the street, and getting hammered with salt every time the salt truck drives by (we don't have off street parking where we live).
    Electricity:
If you are not in that room, turn out the light. If there is enough daylight shining in the window, also turn out the light.
    Heating and air conditioning:
Air conditioning day time 76 degrees Air conditioning night time set back (sun set to sun rise) 72
Heat day time 68 degrees Heat night time set back 65 degrees
the dead band between 76 and 68 (daytime) means you are not running heat or a/c. We still have the blower motor circulate air for filtration, but it is otherwise free between those temperatures.
the dead band between 65 and 72 (night time) is also free. Not running heat. We still run the blower motor for air filtration.
    Water:
Where we live our water and sewage bill are combined, and your sewage is calculated based on your water usage. So, we let mother nature water our plants, and we don't wash our cars.
    Pets:
    No pets.
    DIY / Repair:
You got nothing to loose, it's already broken. Try to fix it yourself. Look up a "How To" video on TH-cam (for free).
    Appliances:
We buy the simplest version of every appliance. The no thrills version with no bells and whistles means there is less to go wrong.
Coffee maker - Proctor Silex - it has on/off. That's it. My last proctor silex lasted over 10 years, so I just bought the same one again (for the same price 10 years later).
Coffee grinder - Cuisinart - it has on/off. That's it.
Range/oven - Whirlpool - we have had it for over 15 years, and never had a problem.
Refrigerator - Frigidaire - Freezer top, Frig bottom, glass shelves, Condenser coils on back (not bottom). No Ice maker. No water dispenser. Nada. 19 years and still going.
Microwave - Frigidaire - It's a countertop microwave; cheaper to buy, cheaper to replace, and the new one will always fit the same space where the old one lived. 10 years
Toaster oven - Black and Decker - We have had this thing for over 18 years, and it just won't die.
Dishwasher - Whirlpool - Bare bones basic base model. Still going after 14 years.
Washing machine - Whirlpool direct drive. Hand-me-down from Grandma. Over 25 years old. If it breaks, I watch a TH-cam on how to fix it, and I fix it myself.
Dryer - Whirlpool - Hand-me-down from Grandma. Over 25 years old. If it breaks, I watch a TH-cam on how to fix it, and I fix it myself.
Freezer chest - Kenmore - We bought a scratch-n-dent on sale during friends and family night at Sears with a coupon. We paid less than $50. Still going strong after 19 years.
    Yard Equipment / Tools:
Honda lawnmower. I had it for 21 years. I could no longer get the transmission for it, so I bought a new Honda Lawnmower.
Garden hose - I bought the most expensive and Heavy duty garden hose money can buy. I still have it 19 years later and it is still as good as the day I bought it.
    Decorations:
We don't buy decorations. The only decorations we have are hand-me-downs, and ones that were gifted to us. Decorations are a waste of money. People don't come over your house for the decorations. They come over for the free food, so take Christine's advice and learn to cook.
Some (not all) of our friends make fun of us, be we are debt free, and they are up to their eyeballs in debt. We don't care what people think about our frugal lifestyle, because it works for us. It has afforded us a level of financial flexibility to weather the storm during hard times, and spend money on nice things during good times.
Simplify your life, and you will have more time and money to enjoy the things in life that matter the most.
Thanks Christine! Keep up the good work.

A good healthy rabbit is an affordable pet option. Average lifespan is about 12 years. They don't need rabies shots nor getting spayed/neutered. Vet visits are very minimal or pretty much not needed. Grooming needs are about the same as a cat. They can be litter trained like a cat and behave very much like cats. They are very social like dogs. They're also quiet. Food and litter are fairly cheap at a farmer's supply store. Treats can be bought along with your regular fresh produce. They LOVE bananas. Just make sure to pet proof your house since they have a tendency to chew "spicy vines" (electrical cords). Mine ruined a few charger chords and my vacuume cleaner cord, and my window fan cord...

I do a lot of these and have since I was in my 20’s. We do the credit card cashback and bought a snowblower (self propelled, heated handles) one year. It was free. We cashed in over $1,000 this past January. We buy everything we can with 1 card and pay it off every month. We fly one airline and joined their perks to get free tickets or upgrades (premium economy for extra leg room, 5’8” f and 5’11”m) for transatlantic flights (he’s from the UK). And of course those airplane tickets are bought with that one card to get cash back. You would be surprised how much you can earn for gas and groceries that you would have spent money on anyway but now you get cash back. Just got $45 by saving aluminum drink cans and taking them to a scrap metal business on the way to ALDI to shop.

Coming from someone who worked in enrollment for a non-profit university:
If your teen chooses to do AP courses, please, please, please look into the colleges/universities that they want to attend to ensure the AP course will be accepted. Some schools will not accept/ allow AP courses to transfer/ double dip into their program. It's easier if it is a general education course, but if it is a course like Anatomy or Music Theory, many schools will not accept the AP scores. The schools want their students to learn their pedagogy (method).

Costco is no longer letting people without a membership use the Costco cash cards. You will need to either have your friend buy the things you want for you, and pay them back, or go in with them and hope the cashier lets them do two transactions (some warehouses are SUPER strict on this if the person isn't an Executive or Business member (who will always be allowed 2 transactions).

I'm in New England and they stopped accepting cash cards without a membership about 6 months ago. I've also heard some warehouses don't allow food court purchases without a membership anymore.

I’ve been reading electric cars are depreciating so fast, they’re an awful buy. 40-50% depreciation in a year.

I've also been forcing myself to work through my pantry of foods. It's made me get more creative and it feels good to see the shelves get lighter. Same with beauty products or whatever else. And finding my favorites and just sticking with them and not trying new stuff.

    Here’s a thought.
Get a few of those 4 X 6 inch plug in LED light panels, set them up on elevated counters/shelves/etc., on the walls opposite these light panels put up a white sheet or a more reflective mylar sheet (a 100 X 4 foot roll of the stuff is less than $50). Another thing is going from chronographs (wall clocks with actual hands) to large display LED digital clocks. I know it isn’t much but these two tips will save you a few pennies on your electric bill each month.
The thing about the clocks is that it takes a lot more electricity to turn the gears in a chronograph than it does to turn on a light in an LED digital clock.
I know it’s old but Gomez and Morticia Addams from The Addams Family.

I opened a separate bank account just for Christmas and gift funds a couple years ago and set aside $50/mo Jan-Aug & $100/mo Sept - Dec. It adds up to about $800/year. Let me tell you, this has taken some HUGE stress off around Christmas - no credit card usage, no worrying about digging into savings. Just using what’s in the “Christmas /gift fund” and when its gone, it’s. Last year I had about $150 left that has rolled into this years funds.

Great ideas, I do most of these things. As for Amazon I usually take a screenshot of the item I’m thinking about buying, so when I look at the photo later I’ve usually decided I don’t need the item. And I also comparison shop online between Walmart and Amazon.

We homeschool, so CLEP is awesome (credits before college) AND they have jobs and a savings account where they will be paying for their own college. Room/board free if they stay at home and go to college. I have 4 kids graduated, two have put themselves through school. No debt. It's important to teach them early how to save/spend. Your channel is AWESOME!!!

I did a Halloween food theme at work one year. I bought some inexpensive aprons in bulk. Printed pictures of various "foods" and we had a food theme pictures taped to the aprons. Started with recycled pizza and pb&J costumes. We added a Pizza Delivery guy to pair with the pizza, a loaf of Wonder bread to add to the PB&J. We added M&Ms plain and peanut, Oreos and Got Milk, A pickle with "I'm kinda a big dill" on a green apron, ketchup and mustard on red and yellow aprons, a Ramen apron, etc. only cost were the cheap restaurant aprons and the copier print outs (in color).

We bought a plug in hybrid suv ( Mitsubishi Higlander) and absolutely love it. We have gone 4 thousand Km on a tank of gas because most of our trips are under 60 Km which is the distance our battery charge lasts. Our electricity bill has only gone up around 20%.

Maybe not an adult costume idea, but when my kids were growing up I copied an idea from a mom of my sister's friend. She made her daughter a "candy machine" out of a cardboard box, silver paint, some markers and wrappers. At first my sons took turns, then one year they both wanted to be the candy machine, so I made a soda machine to go with it. Only had to make a couple of them over the years, as they always saved them and continued to play with them. I think over all the years, I may have bought 3 or 4 cans of spray paint and that was it. They never asked for a different costume. They loved it. People always thought they were cute and played on the candy theme and often gave them extra, lol.

School: I got a story. So i used fasfa to pay for 3 associates in a junior college. After I enlisted, now I have the gi bill. I currently work at starbucks. They are paying for my undergraduate degree and I plan on using the gi bill for my uppergrad. I feel lucky to have opportunity to me. But there are ways to get scholarships and all that jazz to help.

My son and I went as Mario and Luigi ... only had to have bib overalls for both of us. I made our hats from a red sweatshirt and a green sweatshirt ... Make two big circles from the sweatshirt material using a 5 gallon bucket lid. Use a smaller lid in the middle of one of the circles and cut out the smaller circle. Put the "right" sides of the big circles together. Hot glue the two big circles together and turn it right side out. I used the leftover sweatshirt to cut a bill for the hats, and I put a styrofoam plate between layers to give it some stability. Hot glue to the hat. I was luigi with a green long sleeve shirt. My son was Mario with a red long sleeve shirt. My other son was the mushroom -- made him a big hat with large red polka dots. My daughter would not wear the dress to be princess peach, and that was a bitter disappointment, but our costumes were enjoyed by everybody.

Buying in on a steer is not cheaper than a grocery store. Not at all. My husband did that and we ended up paying $8.70 a pound. Most of it was ground beef. I found some good quality ground beef for $2.30 a pound. Yes, buying a side of beef will likely be better healthier option, but it’s not cheaper.

I know everything youve suggested over the years and its helped my husband and me so much with being a young family. I got say I love that you keep preaching same things because I still need kick in butt an good old reminder. When we get confortable I stop being so critical with my choices and it messes us up pantry wise or financially for next month and we play catchup.
