I'm glad you found me, too. Be sure to Like and Subscribe. Apparently, the more Likes I get, the higher my videos appear when people search for bonsai. I really enjoy talking with people about the work I'm doing on the trees. I should have a new video out this week where I show how I carve the stones. Watch for it and be sure to let me know what you think.
Great move with the hollow. I think it is going to turn out great. I would like to see a steeper angle on the back so that it really looks like it was snapped off with the shear of the wind. I just love how you switch direction based on the case. I think it shows real understanding of the circumstance and the need to be adaptable. And I really think the carving of the hollow turned out very believable as a natural event.
Wow drastic work but I love it! I’m in New Orleans too and have a small collection including a bald cypress from the swamps would love to meet sometime
I'm glad you're liking the videos. I'll have some more up soon. To me "flat-top" is more than just a style, it is a styling philosophy. I hope I get that across in the videos.
Thanks for watching! The platform is a Harbor Freight "500lb Capicity Hydraulic Table Cart". The ones they sell now do not look the same as the one I bought many years back, so I cannot say how the new ones perform. On top of that is a Meko Bonsai table top workstand. They're great. Then a piece of plywood because the black plastic container does not sit well on a smaller round turntable.
Thanks for the info man, hopefully ill have a bonsai big enough to justify the purchase lol! Right now I'm getting away w/ two boards and some sand (Egyptian style)
Jerome Kostus Right now the tree is in prison. Well, in a chicken wire cage. The lower apex did not come back. However, it did sprout a the base and all was going well. Until a storm came and the nearby pecan tree dropped a small branch on it. I blame the squirrels. They're up there chewing on the branches. It sprouted again, and then another storm repeated the damage. So now I have sprouts lower on the that side of the tree that I'm protecting with a full cage of chicken wire. Something got in there and bent one of them recently, I see immature pecans in there, so, yeah, squirrels are trying my patience. Still green and I have some ideas, but I won't be touching anything on that side of the tree with much more than a little bit of wire next year. The whole side is weak from the repeated abuse of storms and wildlife. The left side of the tree is going wel with vigorous growth.

awesome stuff, I was hoping for an update from your, umm, dig? I wish I could find something like this around here in CT, but I don't think they grow around here. It looks like such and interesting tree. I hope it recovers well this year, and I can't wait to see it's progress. PS, how much to get one of these supped up here?
I'm sure the shipping cost would be too damned much. We all want what we cannot have. You're in a great zone for a variety of pines and beautiful maples. Glad you liked the video. I'll be sure to do another one on this tree next year. Right now, I have 4 videos to edit and track, and ideas for 2 videos I want to do this year.
Bill, in the last video you indicated the cypress was going to "sit in water and bonsai soil." Could you expand a little more on the care of the cypress over the last year. Did you drain and replace the standing water once a month, or did you just refill the water in the tub periodically? Was the tree ever in moist bonsai soil instead of standing water? Thanks so much for your videos.
+USFmarine My standard bonsai soil is pine bark mulch (sold here as "Soil Conditioner") and haydite. For bald cypress, I make a haphazard blend of slightly more pine bark to haydite. I don't sift either component. I make sure to get as much of the original soil out of the roots as possible. I put the tree into the growing container (a non-draining mortar mixing tub from Home Depot/Lowes) and pot it as well as I can in the soil. Since I cut the root ball as flat as possible, I don't need to tie down the tree. Smaller bald cypress can be a bit more of a problem, but these wide ones stand very well. I then fill the tub with water. I top off the water as needed. The only time I drain off water is if mosquitoes or algae is growing. Otherwise, I'll lightly feed with Miracle Grow LiquaFeed periodically. I use a non-draining tub because the Summer is hot and I may not be able to keep the tree as moist as needed in the first year. After the first or second year, I cut holes in the tub for drainage. I find the roots are better for it. Sometimes I'll have a tree that will float out of the growing tub. For those, I put bricks in the tub to hold them down. After the first year, the tree is well established in the soil and will no longer float. And thanks for watching all the videos!
Yes. Soon. The tree had a BAD year on the lower apex right side. Mother nature, in all her fury, did not want me to create that second apex. The left side has fared much better.
+David Salas Thanks for watching! I get these black plastic tubs from Lowes and Home Depot. They're roughly a 10-gallon capacity. About 6-inches high and 20x28. Cost is about $5. There is a larger 20-gallon tub that's 8-inches high and 24x36. Cost is about $12-$14. Look in the concrete section of the stores. They call them something like "mixing tub".
Nice tree guy! Cant believe that your channel hasnt come up till now as I search for bonsai all the time. Glad to have come across your vids!!!!!!!!!

Love your videos! So informative and understandable. Thanks Bill!
Thank you for saying so. Keep the feedback coming.
Thank you for these bald cypress videos. B cypress makes most of my collection and I'm really interested in the flat top style.

That adjustable platform is bad ass!

I'm looking forward to see how this ends up
Oh. I'm hoping it doesn't end. That would bad. ;)
You have any updates as to how it looks today?

If this tree survives, It will have stories to tell!
please some pictures the look of bonsai to this date.

Im so curious about more videos! / Bonsai Talk
I'm curious too! Spring popped a bit early this year, so I'm waiting for the leaves to set before working on my bald cypress.

What are you using as pots? Do you have drain holes since they are swamp trees?
