I’m not for state inspections (less Government the better) but it’s scary what’s on the road down here.
I love that you took the time to try and find out the true root of the problem instead of just playing "swaptronics!" I recently bought a 2021 Outlander Sport (2WD, SE model) and it is giving this same "airbag service required" warning after only two days of driving it. The dealership said the battery was low which can cause this error, so they charged it. Two more days went by of driving without any issues, but the airbag warning came on again. I read on some forums where the message showed up after the person's seat was moved all the way back. I have done this same thing since I'm a bit taller than my daughter. Another mechanic suggested the seat weight sensor can go bad, so I guess I'll be checking both the fuse and under the seat, lol! I find it pretty crappy that this same issue has been going on from 2007 all the way to 2021. They need to fix it since it's a safety issue.

I had a similar problem and found a blown fuse on a 5 series bmw . The car sales yard got a bit carried away with the carpet shampooing and filled the plugs under the seats with water blowing the seat occupancy fuse. Usually when that fuse goes its because someone has knelt on the seat breaking the sensor element in the seat base. Its funny what you remember. LOL
Usually used car dealers want things fixed as cheaply as possible, and the repair only has to last long enough for them to sell the car. For those reasons, I think you made the right call to ship it. If the fuse blows again, the dealer has the option to bring it back. But it wouldn't surprise me if they just kept replacing the fuse every time it blows until they sell the car
Thank you for doing a Mitsubishi video. I have 160,000 on my Outlander and I just wish it had a timing chain instead of a belt. The trim in mine is great.
Had a similar issue with a 2016 Rav4 recently. ECU IG 3 7.5A intermittently blown. That particular fuse fed no less than 6 systems.. Obvious symptoms included electric power steering, ABS, HVAC control all innop. Power distribution diagrams only identified the systems, not the wires. Had to find the fuse in the diagram for each individual system to identify wires and connection points to start looking for the issue. To cut the story short, connector for the laser cruise/front park sensors sub harness, neither optioned on this truck, was left uncapped in the left front bumper area after some previous body work. Connector developed green death, just add water and, voila! Pop goes the fuse. Look forward to part 2...
I wish that was true if you can do it I can do it,, BUT I'm here to tell you I bet you have forgot more than I will never know.. you are the man DR of mechanics!!..

Aaah, the world of electrical wiring in a car. What a conundrum, lol. You recently did the rear alignment on my '07 Galant. One problem I've encountered is my car battery being drained over time. It doesn't happen all that much, but did happen yesterday when I went to go for an appt.. It seemed to only happen in the really cold times. It was too cold to check anything out, but now it's warming up and I'm going to try and scan the fuses layout from the cover and just start probing wires and record all the results. Its a relatively new battery from NAPA, only 2 yrs old. When I bought the car, it had a new battery, but I had been working on the car one day, left doors open, and drained it down to nothing. So when I had trouble starting the car in the winter, I just bought the new battery. I checked the battery voltage when it didn't start in the winter it was a little over 11 volts. I did check after charging it while running and the voltage was 14.65 volts so I'm 'assuming the alternator is working ok. I do want to change out the starter, just because I have to pull the exhaust manifold just to get to it and check anything. I'm going OEM Mitsubishi because the guy doing the video I looked at was changing it for the 2nd time because he had bought it at advance auto. sure they warrantee them. But I'm hoping to do it only once. I usually go NAPA but all the one's they had said they 'may' fit. Such is life and thanks for sharing and I'll let you know what I find. Might even just have to call upon your assistance again. If I drive it every day seems all right.
The "extra taps....remote start" caught my attention. I would check the power draw through the circuit while turning peripherals on and off plus trying the remote start. Second is moisture/spill under seat and carpet. Would consider pulling up the carpet/sill and following line back to the fuse. Should be relatively short (pun) exercise. Distant third would be the 4wd switch.

We had the dealer install a remote start years ago before manufacturers provided plug in kits. What a disaster. Found out they didn't do it but had a vendor come to their garage to do it. Fuses blowing, electrical issues. Dodge and the vendor were arguing back and forth as to who was covering repairs. Car sat at dealership 2 weeks the 4th time in. They called and said it was done. We went to pick it up and it smelled like something electrical burning. Traded it in.
As so often the case, it boils down to "check the fuses". While it is best to collect any relevant information you can, a DIY'er without any special equipment would have found important direction just by pulling and inspecting fuses and fuse panel connections.
Some fuses just blow open easier than the majority of all the rest of fuses. Watching a fuse while turning on a module with a large input capacitor for filtering, I noticed the fuse wire slightly moving when the module was turned on due to a lot of inrush current charging the capacitor. The fuse did not blow open as seen in other open fuses. Not having better test methods and lab equipment you are forced into a corner making decisions from what trouble shooting info you have done. Changing a fuse and going from there done many times in heavy machinery business. Time vs. money. Good call.
@@2405jacko I'd say someone was keeping change in the ashtray (doesn't look like it was used for ash), and managed to bounce a coin out of it somehow - rough road, etc.
Eric, Great video and interesting problem. I think the way you are going about it is correct to wait and see if it blows again. Like the new Jeep hat - even though you are not a 'black hat' guy :) SMA#1 God bless Paul
We do enhanced safety inspections here in pa and no dash lights can be on. I’ve seen many come in with fuses missing for airbag lights abs lights. You put them back and everything is fine. Makes u wonder.
Many of these things can just be related to low battery voltage. When I worked in the mitsu dealer charging the battery and erasing the codes would have been #1 then do a short test drive after that.the see which ones come back. Other than the fuse .
With all the gizmos you said was added there is a chance that someone tried to use the circuit and overloaded it. Or like someone else said they switched fuses.
I hate those too! I've had some like this that I threw a new fuse in, and they were fine & the vehicle never came back for that problem again. Could've been someone pokin' and proddin' where they shouldn't have been - hard to say. It's frustrating, though, because I like to fix 'em once-and-for-all on the 1st visit! Sometimes that's just how things go. We can only do our best!
Hahahahahahahahahaha, first off nice to see you were up an hour before me. COFFEE......great to see a vid from ya. Not had good luck with Mitsubishi/Chrysler wiring in the 96 range. I did find though that starting at all the "hard" bends is where I found most the shorts and wire breaks. But that was with the Mitsu/Chrysler thingy. Good luck
Well that was interesting diagnosis just a blown fuse huh something made it blow. I would tell the owner drive it a few days and see if lights come back on.
I buy auction cars sometimes...at least half of the time codes, blown fuses and problems are caused by somebody's attempt to fix something else. Replace the fuse and drive it seems like the best plan. If it blows again, then dig.
Eric, since it's an auction vehicle, maybe that fuse never really blew on that circuit. It have have been swapped out on another vehicle that needed a 10 amp fuse. At least it was a simple repair. 👍
Good video. Regarding a guess. Seems on TH-cam the diyers find the vacuum solinoids for the 4x4 fail. Or that the systems act up if the battery connections are poor. Of the items on fuse 17 I think it's likely the 4x4 and would start there. But that's with free time I'd spend trying to figure it out. In your case, ship it. :) Then maybe stay tuned for it to find its way back to auction. Guessing this was marked as part 1 because in x number of hours days or weeks it'll come back for diagnostics... not if it's months though... they probably just keep changing #17
Auction car .... in my game ( camera repairs ) usually the gear that ends up on Auction sites with faults, have already been looked at by 27 other techs, and they gave up and flipped it at auction .... I am sure you see this too Eric !
Eric, did you run through all the seat slides, sit in passenger and drivers seats making them move in all control such as seat back etc and plug in all seatbelts? Also sit in back seat behind driver and passenger and move your feet to see if that triggers the fuse. If nothing then it will be in the 4WD and since it shifter in shop I would suspect the shifting motor or motor wiring when moving.
Inside seat belt latch the connector is dirty, open the catch for seat belt (driver-side) and clean the airbag contact point with crc contact cleaner reassemble.

Nice to see I’m not the only one that’s up this early, lol.
I would have loved to see the current draw on a scope. I'm betting that will be in part II. Thank You Eric!
If you turn captions on, at the beginning it thinks he says "reviewers have welcome back to the cell phone Auto channel" lol
I often watch those for the entertainment value.
Time vs. money. Good call.
The little one is getting big Eric O. Jeesh
I have an endeavor and it has a mind of it's own
Any chance that the dime wedged in the fuse box was the culprit? Chris
That's kinda what I was thinking
@@miztatone918 Same here.
@@2405jacko I'd say someone was keeping change in the ashtray (doesn't look like it was used for ash), and managed to bounce a coin out of it somehow - rough road, etc.
@@brand-x7049 Agreed.
Good find and hope it will return and may find the result or maybe not.
Another new scan tool Eric??? I guess being a TH-camr has many bonuses!
Which one is this? A new autel one?
Eric,
Great video and interesting problem. I think the way you are going about it is correct to wait and see if it blows again.
Like the new Jeep hat - even though you are not a 'black hat' guy :)
SMA#1
God bless
Paul
We do enhanced safety inspections here in pa and no dash lights can be on. I’ve seen many come in with fuses missing for airbag lights abs lights. You put them back and everything is fine. Makes u wonder.
Waiting for part 2.
Many of these things can just be related to low battery voltage. When I worked in the mitsu dealer charging the battery and erasing the codes would have been #1 then do a short test drive after that.the see which ones come back. Other than the fuse .
Well done Doc.
Oi....another mystery. 😉
Thanks for the video.
Awww. My daughter is 12 now. I remember that age. Now I"m going to cry. My kids are still sweet on me. Now I am crying. Now my keyboard is wet.
Hi
Thank you for all videos
Good luck
Awesome bro helped me out !
Ivan would be proud.
Well that was interesting diagnosis just a blown fuse huh something made it blow. I would tell the owner drive it a few days and see if lights come back on.
Great job, thx for sharing.
I think he'll be back! since this is part 1 :)
I buy auction cars sometimes...at least half of the time codes, blown fuses and problems are caused by somebody's attempt to fix something else. Replace the fuse and drive it seems like the best plan. If it blows again, then dig.
We are all burning the midnight oil... but "welcome back!!" Its time to rise and shine!! We got ourselves an Outlander.
Want to show us a blown (or not) fuse? Backlight it (with flashlight, off-axis). Shows up better than any other method.
Wow I’m not the only one up at the crack of dawn
You know her too? Wow.
She gets around.
What does Dawn's crack have to do with anything?
Eric, since it's an auction vehicle, maybe that fuse never really blew on that circuit. It have have been swapped out on another vehicle that needed a 10 amp fuse. At least it was a simple repair. 👍
I think it's just low on brake light fluid!? Or the wiffle pin is out of alignment!? 🎱
Ha ha! I'd probably be outta the car before I told the airbag system to self test!
Then maybe stay tuned for it to find its way back to auction.
Guessing this was marked as part 1 because in x number of hours days or weeks it'll come back for diagnostics... not if it's months though... they probably just keep changing #17
Just wash the fuse box with some brake cleaner. That will fix it.
Great vid Mr O saludos.
hi eric, I say take that dime you found add another 1.90 to it ...and go get and soft serve cone, and call it a day! job well done...haha
Inside seat belt latch the connector is dirty, open the catch for seat belt (driver-side) and clean the airbag contact point with crc contact cleaner reassemble.
The Money Light and the BOOM Light.
Good video but it's never just the fuse, fingers crossed it was a simple fluke
