    Things i love about Birmingham, Public transport so easy, so much green space, friendly people, It's a lot cheaper than the south, entertainment,..... thing i don't like ... Birmingham has to be the furthest city from any sea-side beach in the country....

    You're room is spacious and gorgeous, and the views! the views! This video made me so reminiscent of my first year uni room. You seem so comfortable in front of the camera, the speaking clip in the beginning gave perfect context.

    • @PetiteElise
      @PetiteElise  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know - I absolutely loved it! The views looked 100x better in real life as well, it made me so happy :) ah that's why I made this video, to share it and also to give me memories of the times I spent in there haha. Thank you so much, your comment means a lot!!

      Everywhere in England seems picturesque in every video I see on TH-cam. It definitely has its place on my travel bucket list. What are you studying in uni?

    • @PetiteElise
      @PetiteElise  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is really beautiful - please come! Where else is on your bucket list? I'm studying english and drama at the moment and love it! Are you currently studying too?

    • @AaronTabibzadeh
      @AaronTabibzadeh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Australia and South Africa are definitely up there, I really want to be up close and personal with wild animals like kangaroos and lions. I'm going into my third year of university studying neuroscience. Drama sounds lovely, I'm a little bit of a thespian myself, what're some your favorite shows?

    • @PetiteElise
      @PetiteElise  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh yeah I've been on safari in SA and it was an incredible experience seeing nature play out right in front of your eyes (saw hyenas kill a baby gazelle whilst it's mum watched from the sidelines...it was like a disney movie). Wow that's impressive - how are you finding it? I love Tennessee William's plays, Albee's 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' and Shakespeare. I do a lot of theatre but would love to experiment with film!

    recognised this was Birmingham accommodation before the video even started properly when I saw out the windows haha 😂 were these the new builds? very modern, I like that a lot! but one thing I thought was odd was that a door was shared with the bathroom and wardrobe? that'd be so awkward if you wanted privacy for both :c

    • @PetiteElise

    Hi, this might be a strange question but I’m looking to apply for UoB, and was wondering with self catered apartments, can you say when applying wether you would rather share an apartment with fewer or more people? As I know in one of the accommodations it says that it is shared between 3-8 people and I would rather have more people. When applying can you say your preference? Thanks and love the videos! Great help 👍

      Different accommodation housing has a different amount of rooms. So for example in the vale, the mason has I think 6 rooms... and Elgar court has 8 so you get the idea.

    Hi i just recieved my offer to study economics at birmingham and am still deciding about my accomodation. I've shortlisted it to Mason and victoria hall. Is it difficult to commute to the campus? Also, Mason doesn't do a meal plan option but is it difficult managing without it in first year?
    Again thanks for the informing video!

    • @PetiteElise
      @PetiteElise  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congratulations on your offer! Not at all - Mason is a 10ish minute walk to campus and they're recently created a footpath that everyone from the Vale uses, so it's safe and easy to get to class. I think Victoria Hall is even closer to uni (about 5 minutes) so it's all really accessible. I loved cooking for myself - it gave me the ability to be flexible with meal times and with what I wanted to eat! Hopefully see you around next September :)

    I'm looking at doing English and Drama at bham uni - do people find it a pain having to travel out to Selly Oak??

    • @PetiteElise
      @PetiteElise  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It can be quite a pain, especially in first year when living in the Vale but they do a free shuttle bus service from main campus so it's usually not too bad. I sometimes liked to walk all the way which took about 50 mins but it was a nice way to get some exercise in! Second year is much easier though, as we all live a lot closer and it's usually only a 25 min walk :)

    Hii I don't know if you'll see this as you uploaded this video quite a while ago, but I was wondering how easy it is to get a place in student accommodation in Birmingham? I'm going abroad for a semester after the summer and I really wanna go to Birmingham, but accommodation isn't guaranteed if you only go for a semester, which sucks cause it's kinda hard to arrange private accommodation from abroad. Hope you can help x

    • @PetiteElise
      @PetiteElise  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! That's a tricky one - most of the people I know managed to get their accommodation pretty easily and their first choices, but I'm not sure what it will be like for people in your situation! Best thing to do is to make sure you know exactly which accommodation you like the best and in which order and hope for the best. However, I think all accommodation had its positives and negatives and so wherever you end up, I'm sure you'll have a great time x

      Aquilla.Van.Ellison hey! I hope this doesn't sound too random, but I'm an international student and I received an offer to study English at UoB. I have never been to Birmingham and probably won't before I actually start my degree, but I fell in love with the city and very much like the English course at the university. I am still very nervous about what to expect and haven't been able to contact many current students, so I was wondering if you could maybe tell me more about life in Birmingham and the what it is like to English there, if you are not busy?

    • @Simeylamb98x
      @Simeylamb98x 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      NellBurton777 of course! It would be my pleasure! Well for English first year the options are very broad (I am assuming the course hasn't changed and you will do the same as me). You will do 4 core modules: Prose, Poetry, Language for Literature and Plays and Performance. Poetry and Prose are 100% essay assessed and Lang for lit and plays are 100% exam assessed in the summer.
      There are plenty of opportunities to practice submitting essays before the assessed ones are handed in so don't worry about not having experience in uni writing. Prose has some great books like Dracula or The ABC murders (nothing too long) and with that it's less close reading and more theory so you learn about Dracula in relation to post colonialism or feminism for example. Poetry is more close reading (which is more what I was used to from high school), Lang for lit approaches a study of literature called semiotics which is a fancy word for looking at the language of literature as a foundation for meaning rather than literary techniques (think science based approach rather than artsy approach) It is hard but don't worry it's a universal difficulty and everyone groups together to struggle through Lang (after all it is a literature degree not language). Plays and performance is insanely good, I never really enjoyed plays that much at school but there is a massive emphasis on performance (not you performing) so we think about about casting, costume and staging etc as well as the plays themselves, we dabble with a little Shakespeare and are currently reading the Crucible which I think is awesome!
      Secondary to that you get to pick some modules for yourself. This can be done in two ways: the history pathway (where you study literature from a specific time/place e.g. American literature) OR 2 creative pathways (writing, drama,film,language). I chose the creative pathway and did film and language. Even though I struggled with Lang for lit I loved language and adored film (I'm doing more film next year!). The course is pretty awesome, it is so flexible and first year gives you a good base so that that you know what you like and don't like for second year (I just picked my second year options and they are awesome!).
      As for being international, don't worry! Bham is such a diverse community and everyone mixes with everyone. I'm British but I am only friends with a couple of people who are from the UK. Most of my friends are internationals from all over the world. Some internationals choose to stick with people from their home country (which is super easy due to the amount of nation based societies bham has) so you can do whatever you feel comfortable with! My friend, who I share a flat with in halls and will continue to live with next year is an English and creative writing student from Hong Kong and she never came to the uni before either, she loves it here! If you want to have a snoop around campus but cannot make it to the UK I recommend checking out the Bham TH-cam channel or the GuildTV channel (guild Tv is one of the societies here and runs the University TV network) both will give you a flavour of life on campus.
      Feeewwwww that was a long answer, sorry for putting everyone through that! I hope I have set your mind at rest and answered your question. If you have any more about social life/societies/sport or any other aspect of uni life here let me know PM me or whatever and I can talk you through it some more (that is if you made it through my previous rambling ;) ) Good luck and I hope to see you around the English department next year!

    Hello! How old are students in residence typically? I'm coming on exchange and I am 21, will I be a lot older than the others?

    • @PetiteElise
      @PetiteElise  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically students in first year accommodation are 18-20 but I've met people older on year abroad etc. It's super easy to get on with everyone and there are so many different people living together that you'll definitely find people you click with :)

    hi, love your room!
    I've just received my offer to come here to study English lit, I'm debating which halls to stay in. My main concern is that Ive read a lot of people tend to label anyone at Mason as posh, sounds a silly question but does this make it hard to integrate with other halls with all the prejudices I;ve heard about? Thanks!

    • @PetiteElise
      @PetiteElise  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yay congratulations, that's amazing! Haha yeah that label does exist, but honestly it's just a bit of fun and doesn't really bother anyone. It doesn't make it hard to integrate at all - I had loads of friends in different halls!

    can we do individual housing? As in not share dorm room with other student?

    • @PetiteElise
      @PetiteElise  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So all university accommodation is shared with others with your own room. If you want your own place, there were some studio apartments at the top of mason halls or you could find your own place in Birmingham!

      @trevorholland2542 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Petite Elise Thank you so much for replying! My experience with roommates has been nightmare-ish so i don't think i would want to share a room with anyone else besides me lol :)
