There 's a great video that goes with this song. It's a split screen of Mike playing all the instruments.
My most favourite Christmas song ever.
Hi John. I'm a classical musician (42 yrs). I've always believed Oldfield is the modern day equivalent of Bach. I have all of Mike's records and I absolutely insist you listen to "amarok". It's probably Mike's greatest achievement. If not on the channel please listen to it I your own time... you will be utterly grateful. Keep up the good work
You have to watch the video to appreciate this one, it shows Mike playing all the instruments himself, the tune is an old christmas hym which always reminds me of Christmas :)
Mikes 4th album Incantations is the second rock 4 part symphony, the first being Tales From Topographic Oceans by Yes. Incantations is 4 album sides in the form of a classical symphony. My favorite from Mike. 8th on my all music history list.
Mike Oldfield 👍💪
As you continue to hear more of Oldfield you will discover he is one of the most eccentric and idiosyncratic of artists - a musical chameleon - you never knew what he was going to produce next.
At this time he was just predominantly known for his epic side long instrumentals - he was also considered somewhat of an introvert, shy, awkward and shunning the media and fame he was experiencing. However, he actually has a very English dry sense of humour and with his background of traditional folk music he would quite often throw together a short ditty or record a version of an old piece music just for fun which Virgin, his musical company, dutifully released as singles (Oldfield was their biggest selling artist by far back then so anything he did was put out and hoped to sell).
Also, during the 1970's in the UK, the charts would often inexplicably have novelty songs or instrumentals that somehow captured the record buying publics imagination at the time and did very well, some hitting the top 10 and even top 5! This was a Christmas single and reached the no. 5 spot on the UK chart.
It is on just about every Christmas compilation album and is played every Christmas out and about and earns Oldfield a nice little royalty bonus. The following year Oldfield goes one better and "Portsmouth" a traditional British Sea Shanty, reaches the dizzying heights of No. 4 on the UK chart!
This is one of Mike's most well known tracks, even non fans know it, Mike plays most of the instruments as usual, there is an official video for this where you can see him playing, including the amazing guitar playing.
I agree with the previous poster who recommended to have a look at the video, e. g. th-cam.com/video/VCvz7uflMIU/w-d-xo.html
And you're right, this is in fact a song from the (late) middle ages. Of course, Mike Oldfield made some minor changes (other instruments, faster playing), but all in all it is this very old tune. It still rocks after more than 600 years.
Wonderful track, featuring the incredible Les Penning playing the recorders. Les played recorder on Ommadawn too. He's still going - nearly 80 now. Check out his "Return to Penrhos" series on TH-cam where he re-recorded some of his Oldfield stuff; Penrhos was where Mike Oldfield hung out around the time "Ommadawn" was recorded.
As you discovered, it's Latin for "In sweet rejoicing", it is a Christmas. The J.S. Bach piece, Chorale BMV 729 is based on this tune. Mike's rendition is a nicely lively one, a lot versions are kind of knuckle-dragging. Oldfield is under appreciated. So are Band-Maid songs "macaronic"?
In Dulce Jubilo means In Sweet Joy
He can make the world turn on its head. He decided to retire from this ungrateful world, and I understand.
Esa guitarra es pura seda...
Not sure why you chose this particular Mike Oldfield nonsense song, but,... oh, never mind.
I see you've done Moonlight Shadow, so (imho) "Man in the Rain" and "To France" would probably delight you. If you do them, try to find the extended versions. There exist youtube videos for these that have a pleasing video montage accompanying.
For a long-form reaction, "Incantations" parts 1 & 2 (esp. the mesmerizing "Diana" parts) are my favourites (but make sure you use the "digital deluxe" remastered versions -- they have distinctly better clarity/separation for all the myriad instruments). Very few reactors have done "Incantations", which is sad. Mike Oldfield doesn't get nearly enough love.
Incantations is my 8th favorite album in all music history. A great masterpiece that I enjoy much like the first 4 part symphony, Tales From Topographic Oceans, which is the finest music ever written or recorded in all music history.
Check out the video - it shows the build up of instruments - this is one of his most satisfying and joyous tracks!
Come on Jon....REACTION TO AMAROK IF YOU CAN.....
Please
I think you need to work upto to Amarok, there are lots of tracks to hear from Mike first, then you can evaluate his journey, which reaches its zenith with Amarok.

How about Crisis?
@amarok9097 Yes, good choice, the title track is astounding, especially the drums by Simon Phillips. All the tracks on that album are strong.
@@amarok9097 Crises 😉
That tack is not really representative of Oldfield's music and guitar playing/sound.
Check out Incantations part 3, but it's à 15 minutes run:

Great reaction channel by the way 👋
¿Is it not? ¿Which track is representetive of Oldfield's music then?
@@edbardof7941 There's a link in my comment. Follow it and you'll have an answer.
Indul... see... joob... eelo
This was a Christmas single and not like his own written works.
