    I never realized that at one time, - Viking conquest, empire, influence, and geographic reach was all as extensive and as truly that widely influential as
    it was.
    This was really a super post, squeezing in all kinds of great relevant information on like 10 minutes.

    Just a little tip for future reference to Drogheda in county Louth Ireland. It is pronounced Draw Hed A. The G is silent.

    My grandfather was Danish and would always tell us grandkids that according to his family history we were the descendants of Vikings and tell us how proud we should be of that fact. When we had an opportunity to visit Norway with a musical ensemble that my husband played in the two Norwegian gentlemen who served as our guides saw my son and me for the first time and came over to us and asked if we were Norwegian and I explained to them about my grandpa. That was good enough for them! Both of them warned us that people would come up to us on the tour and start speaking in Norwegian to us mistaking us for their fellow citizens. We quit counting after the 20th time or so how many times the two of us were asked that question. My son, who has platinum blond hair, dark blue eyes and is 6 feet 2 inches tall told them that kids at his high school called him an albino. One guide told him to tell those kids that he was the descendant of the Vikings and who were their ancestors? According to my son he always got surprised looks when he mentioned his Viking ancestors to the kids who asked if he was an albino and soon became known as Viking Boy.

      Oddly enough Norwegian vikings had dark hair and she paler eyes more associated with modern day Irish. The blonde hair blue eyes came from Germanic tribe’s later in the 15-16 century.

    i just subscribed to you!
    nice video, i love seeing stuff about early medieval europe.
    i would love to see you make a video about material culture.
    like furniture or house construction.
    i know that's quite mundane in comparison to your usual subjects, but as an early medieval recreator it would be a huge help.
    especially because there aren't a lot of videos on those subjects.

    William the Conqueror (decendant of Rollo) attacked and won the throne of England only because Harald Hardrada (then king of Norway and decendant of Harald Fairhair) had already attempted to do so a short time before and got killed. Harald Hardrada's death is what is marked as ''the end of the Viking age'', and William was able to just sail over there and take the throne of England without much resistance, because Harald Hardrada and his army had already almost destroyed all of the English soldiers in their attempt to conquer the throne. IMAGINE how different not only England, but the entire world would had been today, if Harald Hardrada had succeeded and England would have been shaped going forward by Scandinavian influence instead of French... The English language alone would have been completely different today.

    • @alpacinoravidutt
      @alpacinoravidutt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      was Hardrada a Christian? or did he follow norse mythology. that too couldve made a big difference.

    • @bobmalibaliyahmarley1551
      @bobmalibaliyahmarley1551 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@alpacinoravidutt I believe he was eventually christianized, but you have to keep in mind that Scandinavia did not become christianized over night, the christianization took decades and even centuries to complete. Many that converted still worshipped their pagan Åsatru gods in secret, because at some points it was basicly, ''Convert, or get killed.'' mentality. When we talk about landmass, what is today Denmark and Sweden was christianized long before Norway, and especially northern Norway, that was the hardest part for christianity to influence, because they were die hard pagans up in the most northern parts of Scandinavia. So your question is hard to answer, if he was truly a christian or if he was just a ''fake'' christian, because like I said... Christianization of Scandinavia didn't happen over night, and many still worshipped Odin, Tor and the other gods. Many even welcomed Jesus Christ/God as part of ''The Pantheon'', side by side with Odin, Tor and the other gods.

      Therefore the UK monarchy is far from being UK blood. It's French and Scandinavia, which one would it be is another story 😂😂😂
      And today Harry's offsprings mixed with Megan who's half black.
      And the public is so much against Megan, how hypocrite is that.

    The Vikings converted to Christianity because Christians got better trade deals. There was an anecdote, the Monks said 'we used to get large numbers of converts every year. The Vikings said, 'It's not worth coming here for conversion anymore, they used to give us a new shirt.'

    I'd take issue with the assertion that the 'Viking world' was unknown to the Saxon population - the Anglo-Saxon migrants to Britain had come from Northern Europe (including Denmark) only 300 years before and would have traded with that area subsequently...

    “The Viking age seemed to end as abruptly as it began…..”. Well, actually, didn’t they actually win 🏆 since the Normans were essentially Vikings ….?

    • @Dickiemiller179
      @Dickiemiller179 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not exactly, the Normans were a mix of Viking settlers (rather than raiders), Frank's, and Gallo-Romans. So by the time they become the Normans, they don't actually have very much in common with the Vikings anymore.

      One thing you need to remember is that every generation you go back, your ancestors DOUBLE. So, you have 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great grandparents, and so on. By the time you go back just 25 generations, you have a whopping 16,777,216 grandparents!! (This is considering "normal" marrages and family). At this rate, we're all related eventually. I'm assuming you researched just one particular family line or last name in a straight line going back? Another way to look at it, I'm 99.8% Scandinavian/German white. If I were to trace every line back, eventually I would find that I'm related to just about everybody in Europe, LOL.......

    Must admit to being confused by the runes as depicted at about the 5:45 mark. Looks to be a mash-up with some non-Viking Age (not Old Norse) sets, put into an inappropriate order, and containing some outright errors. I have otherwise been enjoying a lot of videos on this channel, but as someone who writes with runes on a regular basis, I have to voice my concerns about the quality of the information being presented.
