FIRST NIGHT ALONE IN THE WILDERNESS | Solo Bikepacking in Joshua Tree, CA

I've never camped alone outside a designated campsite before, so I gave it a try in Joshua Tree, California during a bikepacking trip. I survived the night, but my poor sleep and the snowy conditions on my route forced me to cut my trip short.

Eli - as someone who has spent a LOT of time outdoors, I'm very happy you had a quiet night and a beautiful morning, but you were NOT safe. Did you have any sort of defense? Knife? Bear spray? Gun? What if someone wanted to attack you? Read 'Trailed' about the Shenandoah Trail murders. I've bought it for others, and it changed how I approach the outdoors. Bill O' Middletown CT

You're absolutely right, it wasn't totally safe by any means. I do keep pepper spray right next to my head while I'm sleeping, and I had a knife with me. Unfortunately I am not licensed to own/carry a firearm in California, but I would if I could! Do you have any tips on staying safe? I'm sure other commenters would like to know as well.
