Great video. I started out on an RK-35 (Recording King Dirty 30s) and it really worked well, but it was definitely a steeper learning curve with setup than a Goodtime would be.
I walked into a music shop where I had previously seen a Vega the week before, but it was gone. I was willing to settle for a Deering Goodtime, but I'm now really glad I didn't get it, though I'll not give anyone any grief for choosing one. The shop owner showed and talked me into the Gold Tone CC-Carlin12 for barely more than the price of the Goodtime, and I'm incredibly happy with it and glad I got it. Later, I also wanted a cheap banger banjo, and went into what is now my local music shop (not where I got the previous banjo), and he carried Recording King banjos, already set up. I had previously seen RK banjos at Guitar Center, crappily set up, and thought they were crap, but with a good setup they are pretty decent instruments, so I got the RKOH-05, and am happy with that also, although it's not as awesome as my CC-Carlin 🙂
I should now mention that this is the first video of yours that I've come across and watched, and now that I've seen a couple others I see that your going for Scruggs style and not clawhammer, which makes my choices somewhat more appropriate for me and not you. Good banjoing, whatever your choices are 🙂
Grest, love the cost per hour analysis. LOL! It sounds like those commercials that tell me I can save the world for only $19 a month. Sometimes we don’t need to financially justify things. I’m guessing you’ve already gotten more than your money’s worth of fun and enjoyment out of it. I need a new strap, which one did you go with? Enjoy and don’t forget to post your progress.
Thanks for tuning in! I ended up buying a strap from Deering intended for use on their Goodtime model. Works like a champ. To customize the length and secure the strap I used some Chicago screws that I bought on Amazon (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08VVJSP42/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1).
love the goodtime banjos!
I got a Deering GT too. Great beginner bang that sounds professional, stays in tune and holds action like a champ.
