  • Documentary: The number of people in New Zealand with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) may be grossly underestimated. For full coverage visit bit.ly/StuffNZ... | Subscribe to our channel: bit.ly/2JPg8oB
The call comes from health professionals, teachers and advocates for those with FASD, who say gaps in research need to be addressed, to “better inform research and policy”.
FASD is a lifelong neurodisability caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol.
The frontline workers told researchers from the University of Auckland and Hāpai te Hauora they wanted to see ‘’evidence-informed’’ intervention and treatment for people with FASD throughout their lives.
The full study is currently being compiled for the Health Research Council but Dr Joanna Chu, from the university’s National Institute for Health Innovation (NIHI), said a prevalence study was highlighted as an ‘’important priority’’.

Thomas should have free transport . Especially if it keeps him out of jail and it keeps him on the right track and improves his life. He deserves to have some happiness in life.

Where are the prevention strategies? Where are the education programmes warning women not to drink alcohol while pregnant, and educating the community too, to support women not to drink while pregnant? There is a massive opportunity for players in the alcohol industry, both big and small, to step up and take a leading role in prevention and education strategies.
