Tearful Sir Cliff Richard says he needs time to recover emotionally

  • Sir Cliff took legal action against the BBC over the live broadcast of a South Yorkshire Police raid on his home in Sunningdale, Berkshire (right), in August 2014, following a child sex assault allegation. Announcing his ruling today, High Court judge Mr Justice Mann said the BBC had infringed the star's privacy rights in a 'serious and sensationalist way'. The veteran popstar - who was previously given £400,000 by the police in an out-of-court settlement last year - was today awarded £210,000 damages, which is set to rise at a later date. A teary Sir Cliff (left) hugged friends after the judge gave his decision and told reporters he was 'choked up', adding: 'I can't believe it. It's wonderful news.'

    The BBC (or any other media) should not be allowed to name someone unless that someone has actually been charged and found guilty.
    In this case, the BBC should be ordered to pay all of Sir Cliff's £4m legal fees on top of any compensation. With all the multichannel competition available out there, the license fee should be scrapped for this limited content dying organisation.

    The way the police and the BBC handled the situation was horrific to say the least. I was called up to be on a jury of a sex abuse case. The accused had already had his name and photograph on the front page of the all the local papers so I thought he’s got to be guilty. Oh no how wrong I was. Half way through the week I thought the prosecution evidence was very thin and didn’t add up but of course I couldn’t discuss it with the rest of the jury.
    Then when we had to make a decision it was a unanimous not guilty. In fact the case should never have gone to court! Sadly I thought the BBC was above all this gutter press reporting but obviously not!

    • @blastfromthepast8344
      @blastfromthepast8344 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well said. At least the SYP had the decency (?) to admit they were wrong and settle out of court. The BBC was also given this opportunity but being the sanctimonious, holier than thou bunch of tossers that they are, they couldn't even do that. It was not in the public interest in the least - it was in the BBC's interest. Or so they thought! I hope this helps to bring them down. They are a corrupt bunch of money wasters.

      Agree - but the British public do not have the backbone that they had in past times. How easy they are swayed by propaganda fear campaigns and easily switch allegiance. How they moved away from UKIP believing they could trust the traitorous Tories to deliver - Never EVER trust a Torie. (or Lieber come to that) The public won't learn. Individuals wont keep making sacrifices if they are thrown back at them.

      name 123 I also agree that it is wrong that us licence payers should foot the bill. Having said that, I would much rather buy a licence than have to watch adverts on the BBC, watching the other commercial channels with their adverts every 10 minutes or so absolutely does my head in. It’s so nice being able to watch a programme without constant ad breaks.

    • @harrish6
      @harrish6 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Susan Keating - In addition to Weirdplanet 1088s comments which in my view are all valid, the bbc which is the Uk National broadcaster and could be expected to be reasonably neutral in its reporting is in fact heavily biased particularly in relation to the European Union from which it receives considerable funding. If "adverts doing your head in" is your only concern then I suggest you watch less mainstream media and do a bit of research on the bbc from more independent sources on line.

    It all boils down to this for me. It doesn't matter how rich and famous you are but in in preliminary investigation of an alleged crime, you have got to have the right to answer those allegations without predjudice, if subsequently charged with an offence, THEN it may become of public interest. South Yorkshire police and the BBC have behaved despicably in ruining this innocent man's reputation forever, even before he had the chance to refute any of the allegations made against him. The same goes for anyone. Your name, offence etc should only be in the public domain if you are actually charged.

    • @flamelily8750
      @flamelily8750 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      curlyjim2550 Exactly. He was tried by social media and found guilty although he was not even arrested and no charges were laid against him. People branding him a paedophile have no proof whatever of this and are merely repeating the vile stories being published. Some trolls take pleasure in bringing people down and it doesn't matter to them if the claims they make are true or false. Unless you have have personal experience that damaging claims against anyone are true you should keep your mouth shut.

    • @lumarei1
      @lumarei1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Jd Fergusson the answer to that is that you are writing these claims on previous unfounded news stories or rumours. Luckily we live in a democratic state where you cannot be convicted on rumours but on evidence. It may come to a shock to some people but the media have one interest only and that is to make money - if necessary by making false claims. Some people on the internet however have a perverted pleasure in inflicting pain by writing vile comments without wanting to be accountable. It is so easy to do and very cowardly.

      Double Blessing Cupcakes My point was that people are not always as they seem. Cliff’s old acquaintance Savile used charity work as a front to stop him being exposed and as we now know, got away with it for decades, so sadly we can’t just assume that everyone whom partakes in charity work is automatically a wonderful human being. The allegations/rumours about Cliff have been around long before the BBC televised the police raid on one of his properties. I think it’s important to note that the courts have not proclaimed Cliff innocent because he was never on trial. The court case was purely regarding privacy.

I'm not Cliff's biggest fan (his best song was Move It and then frankly it was downhill from there), but he needs to know that sympathy for him (rather than suspicion) was the widespread reaction.
