My German isn't that great, but I think he was saying that he'd never sung opera before and was a little nervous. In point of fact they both did a charming job and the result was utterly delightful! I'm so glad I saw this. Thanks.
You are right. This is what he said. Peter Alexander was extreemly famous in the german speaking countries. But not a opera singer. But this Mozart duett is very charming done.

Charming!!! Great performance! Herr Peter Alexander, such a flexible singer. The best Opera version I have ever seen of this duet was by Roth and Roi. Roth especially in this duet and the 2 arias before that, brought out the character in its true depth, rather than just as a comic relief. For 'Bei Mannern...' I loved the rendition best in Edith Mathis and William Workman's performance since they were directed more correctly, like friends sitting besides and wondering and enacting over the philosophy of love rather than hinting as if they are going to be a couple (the first time I saw the opera, it was a modern rendition, and Papageno and Pamina played it as if they were going to be a couple in the future, and I wondered what was going on) . But overall I loved Hermann Prey the most.
Peter Alexander singt besser als die meisten Opernsänger, im Grunde singt er (sie natürlich auch) diese Rolle so, wie Mozart sie konzipiert hat, mit einem leicht schauspielerischen Flair. Seine Stimme ist perfekt klar, wunderbar.
I'm sure they could have sung any opera duet they wished, but this is the only opera number they did together, from their numerous collaborations. Peter Alexander was extremely versatile, a great singer and imitator. In his recording of Im weißen Rössl he hilariously imitated Rudolf Schock's voice and vibrato at one point. But I guess in his modesty he felt unworthy to sing opera with Hallstein. In a later show he referred back to this episode and expressed such a sentiment.

@flixibixi zwar hatte er wohl keine formale Gesangsausbildung, aber... zu seiner Zeit konnten die Menschen im allgemeinen besser singen. Man hat einfach durch Nachahmung gelernt. So wie die Opernsänger im übrigen vor dem Krieg es auch lernten. Peter Alexander singt erstaunlich gut und auch klangvoll. Der Papageno war ja auch genau für die Stimme eines singenden Schauspielers geschrieben. Interessant wäre zu erfahren, wieviel davon Playback war. Als er zusammen mit Christa Ludwig gesungen hatte merkte man bei der Ludwig, dass es wohl Playback war.
Das sind wahre vielseitige Singer und Künstler.
