    I have an 05 Xterra. 348,000 miles on orginal motor and trans. I have done routine maintance. Ball joints brakes etc. it these things as a beast. If you take car of them they will last. O recently upgraded to the 2012 pathfinder. The only thing I don’t like about the 4.0 motors are the timing chain guides and how they used such weak plastic with a sharp chain. If you don’t know how to do it yourself that job can get pricey. Great video.

      Thank you, sir! Hopefully the later years, like 2012, the chain guides we’re improved. Good luck with yours.

      @@MaximumDIYGarage unfortunately, no haha. I think they changed the design in the 14 and up models. But the 12 still has that problem. Luckily, one probably will only have to change them once in the life of the vehicle depending on how aggressive they drive. Or if like mine, they have almost a half million mile vehicle.

      @FDL-ny1de Yeo, my 06 had the chain and guides done at 170k miles, along with a new clutch. Then I replaced the radiator, cats, shocks, away bar bushings, sway bar links, valve covers, spark plugs, air bag sensor, heater core hoses and all vacuum hoses. Check out my channels for all these videos.

  • @alexkram

    Thanks for the video. I bought a poor condition '07 Pathfinder for $500 and the right side exhaust is clogged. I narrowed it down to the right side secondary cat with a pressure gauge threaded into the O2 sensor holes. When I took out the secondary cat it looks somewhat normal except for a lot of gray powder. I can see with my flashlight that the primary cat is hollowed out like yours. I don't think the PO did it because he was clueless about car stuff. Maybe it disintegrated on it's own and then clogged the downstream cat? Anyway I'm planning to replace both but I'm using cheap Amazon cats because the whole car isn't worth the price of OEM ones. Struggling with the bolts that are under the damn heat shield. They are way, way more rusted than yours and access isn't good. I've only soaked them with penetrating oil so far, hopefully that's enough. Thanks again for the video.

    • @MaximumDIYGarage
      @MaximumDIYGarage  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’re welcome, Alex! I think you may be right, they just disintegrate and turn into dust (primaries and then they clog the downstream secondaries). If your state doesn’t require emissions testing then leave them hollow (straight piped).
      I was lucky, my truck spent most of its life in CA. Also my bolts were easy to remove, so I suspect someone was there not too long before I bought the truck. You’re right about the cost. I bought mine for $2,800 and the parts and labor to replace cats was $2,600, lol. Still to me it was worth it as I did I it for half price by DIYing it.
      Let me know how it goes with Amazon cats, I’ve heard there may be some fitment issues and some finagling maybe required. Good luck. It’s a big job!

    • @alexkram
      @alexkram 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MaximumDIYGarage It came off easily! Luckily the rusted bolts came off without any drama. My county in Nevada doesn't require emission testing but the neighboring one does and I'm going to make it pass so that it's more sellable. I probably could have gotten away with a hollowed out secondary cat but I'd already ordered it because that is where the clog was, so I might as well install it now. I'm retired and like fixing things in the garage so that's why I bough this turd, to give me something to work on.

    • @MaximumDIYGarage
      @MaximumDIYGarage  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hi! I’m sorry I do not. With exhaust components, the exact torque is not as critical as, say, engine block, etc. With time and exposure to heat cycles those bolts will melt to the exhaust components anyway and may need to be cut off next time they need to come off. Just use the German torque specs- Good and tight! 😆

      Hi! I bought the cats from a Nissan Dealer parts department (had to drive 140 miles round trip) as they ran a special if I turned in the old cats and would have saved $1000. But it turned out my old cats were hollowed out by PO, so I could not turn them in. So it was $1,500. You May need to verify your part # with your dealer parts dept giving them your VIN as you have a Pathfinder. It took me all day to do the job. I did have to remove the wheel liners and had the truck jacked up in the front with tires off.
      I hope this helps.

      Man, that sucks! Remember, the cats go because they get contaminated. It is usually because of a cracked valve cover hose (in my case the one that connected both valve covers in the front was cracked in both ends), which makes your truck run lean or rich, which clogs up the cat. Fix the underlying issue and the cats will last a long time! Keep us posted on your progress!

    • @MaximumDIYGarage
      @MaximumDIYGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt, is your truck running rough? Poor gas mileage? I’m my case, I almost regretted replacing them initially. I had the codes, but the truck ran great, just a little loud )like an exhaust leak) and smelled like a hot rod (running rich). When I removed the old ones, I found that PO had them hollowed out. I should have just put everything back together as I do not have inspection in my part of state. But I already bought the cats and decided to install them since they were right there. I bought them from Nissan Parts website and they were on sale, so they cost me $1,500 for a pair. (I’m talking about primary cats). Installation was free since I did the labor. I’d say, save your money and don’t replace them if yours are hollowed out, unless you have to pass inspection. Or only replace the primary ones as the secondary will not likely cause any issues and there is no oxygen sensor after the secondary cats, so replacing them will not fix the check engine light.

      @@MaximumDIYGarage not really rough just enough to notice. Yes poor mpg, like 10, maybe. Would have hesitation to rev up when getting on the freeway. Now with the sensors and harness replaced. The hesitation is gone. The tech guy said that the pass side is basically done for and the dr side is getting close to being done for. I suggested the Cataclean. Since I used that on my 2000 X, and it removed the code.

    • @MaximumDIYGarage
      @MaximumDIYGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I do not think you should pre-emptively replace your cats. It is not part of the routine preventative maintenance. If your system operates well, and there are no codes, no check engine light, just continue monitoring it and save up for when the time comes. You may not need to replace them until 200k miles or longer. Instead, I would make sure you keep your MAF sensor clean, make sure you replace your PCV valve and any brittle vacuum hoses/lines to make sure your air/fuel ratio is maintained. I think what kills the cats is poor fuel quality and lack of maintenance of the intake and fuel injection system. Replace your valve covers if the gaskets are leaking and spark plugs when you’re there. I will have a video coming out on that soon.

I had this sensor replaced last year and its been throwing the code again and now the cat code is showing up as well. For the first time I smelt the sulphur smell coming from my exhaust which I know can be a sign that my engine is running rich or my cat is failing. What do you think about this?

      I would replace the cat and then the O2 sensor, otherwise if you just replace the sensor, the failing cat is going to continue fouling the oxygen sensor. Also, make sure that all of your vacuum hoses and PCV hoses are intact, otherwise if one of them is cracked, you have a vacuum leak and as you’re getting more air in the system, the car is dumping more fuel, and that also follows up the catalytic converter deeming it dead. Does that make sense? I will be releasing a video soon on replacing the valve, cover gaskets and all the PCV hoses and vacuum hoses, spark plugs, and a few other things. stay tuned.

      Yea that makes sense thanks! Would you drive it like this? I am assuming it is not great for it. It idles like normal and I haven't really noticed the engine being sluggish or reduced acceleration. But I don't want to make it any worse. Cheers. @@MaximumDIYGarage

    So basically you filmed all the easy parts but didn't say anything on how remove the passenger side when the muffler prevents any movement to remove the cat from the long bolts.. nice. Not

      Oops. Yes, I was too busy fighting with the fasteners and needed both hands. If you have a rusty exhaust, better take it to the shop or be ready to cut things off. Mine is a California truck and all the bolts came off easily. You have to loosen all the connectors and push back the muffler to disconnect.
      You are welcome.
      Not 😂
      Thanks for watching!

      No need to be rude to the guy who made a video to help people out, Use a screwdriver to pry the passenger side back and the muffler will push back enough to remove it. I'm sure you've gotten it by now (hopefully), but the guy shows us all a lot more than other people, and you're scrutinizing the fact he was trying to help people out with what he was able to capture? Do better man, hope you got the repair done.
