- Alarippu literally means the blossoming of a flower. It suggests the blossoming of both dance and the dancer in the presence of an audience. Philosophically we can describe that Alarippu is the one item that helps the Bharathanatyam student transform into a dancer just like a bud is blooming into a beautiful flower. Alarippu is the very first traditional dance piece in the Margam to be taught to students of Bharathanatyam. According to the great dancer T. Balasraswati, “Alarippu, which is based on rhythm alone, brings out the special charm of pure dance.
