Hamsanandi Jathiswaram - Temple dance for Navarathri 2024
Carrin and Divya took up the challenge of performing Jathiswaram, a tough item especially for adult students like them who have been learning Bharathanatyam for about 2-3 years only. Though there were flaws here and there, it was a bold attempt and their hardwork paid off!
What is Jathiswaram?
Jathiswaram is a pure dance presentation like Alarippu, with the element of melody being introduced, weaving various rhythmic patterns from the aduvus learnt. It is devoid of any abhinaya (emotions), in which, intricate sequences are fused with repetitive musical notes. Just like its name, it is executed to the tune of a combination of swara passages in a particular ragam and thalam. The Jathiswaram then becomes a dance where the dancer presents as much of pure dance as she can with a wide range of improvisation both in terms of the adavu sequences as well as rhythmic patterns.
