- In this video I do a little experiment, I wanted to do this for a while and also had a suggestion to do this too. Of course this is working with electricity so don't do it and it dangerous and other warnings. What I want to do is use a car accessory like a air compressor or anything that uses a car's cigarette lighter and make it work indoors with a normal wall outlet.

My search was," Easiest way to plug car socket into normal socket" and it was because I am going to buy an automatic tyre inflator. Your video was the 3rd result, it was meant to be. Also in my country where everything is 220V. A car battery supplies 12-16v and 10 amps. I have a Chinese bluetooth fm transmitter which tells me this information in real time(which is useless unless used specifically for an example as this one). Good video

You can directly connect a 12V battery and connect the positive and negative directly. It will work

Don't use a regular wall outlet plug from something like a lamp. It's too much power. I just tried it with a spot light and bam! Use his suggestion of finding the correct amp outputs.

You can build a cigar socket to 5mm barrel connector adapter for about $3 at your local electronics parts store, then you wouldn't have to destroy two devices. Also, you need to make sure your power supply can handle the draw of the compressor, usually it's at least 10 amps.

I accomplished this with a EC5 plug and a battery/jumper/charger... they have a 12 volt EC5 on the battery packs.. this way I use completely mobile. The battery jump boxes are the size of a cellphone.

thanks, i used the same 2amps 12v and it did the same, i went to look for one that can produce 12v at 10amps but failed to get it here in uganda, and i think i have to instead get a car battery charger like you did . thank you
The wires aren't "positive" and "negative". The wire with the solid line is the "power" wire. The wire with the dotted or striped markings is the "ground" or "neutral" wire. Those spring connectors on the sides of the barrel jack are effectively both ground or neutral. It would be much safer and easier to directly wire the adapter and compressor cables together. If you leave enough wire from the ends of both cables, they can also be easily spliced back together and be used as normal again.
Did the compressor work before the modification?
it would have helped if you read the output on the wall adapter and looked on the compressor device for the input power. if you cant find one, google the device online for its info. being since the compressor cig plug is 12v as is.. id assume you would want 12v wall socket adapter...

I saw a video where the "cigarette lighter" the ones with the hot coil, made it so it could be plugged it into the wall but I can't find it 😢
You may need an ac/dc converter. Wall outlets are ac so my guess is that the pump is "sputtering" because of the alternating current.
To work properly you need smpis power supply 12v 15 amp

No you don't need two negatives
the stripes wire is negative, same for computers and other electronic stuff, it's like the same stripe you see on capacitors which let you know that it's negative, 👍👍

you're going to want a 12 Volt 10 Amp power supply. most car power outlets supply 10 Amps. buying a 12 Volt 10 Amp power supply will cost between 15 and 25 dollars.

No, because the plugin for the air compressor or any other cigarette lighter plugin contains items to help prevent a fuse from blowing, and if it does blow a fuse, it won't blow the car or house fuse, it would blow a tiny very cheap fuse inside of that plugin.

Thanks for the idea, I will check to make one because air compressors are noisy as F and my car can't get parked inside my property so basically it will be annoying for my neighbors.
To make it pretty I would suggest finding the correct adaptor and then cut off both cable and add some small connectors so you can switch between the adaptor and the 12v accessory by plugging the desired end, cleaner and more convenient.

To be fair the white lines are only on the insulation, and the insulation does not have polarity in this circuit. Testing the conductor is always the best way.

@@cameronwhite0076 Mostly, when I was a young whipper snapper watching dad work on the car he somehow touched his left hand from the positive of the battery and ground with his wedding ring, that ring got hot right now and dad had to fight to get it off his hand. I about filled my pants as I was intently watching him then all of a sudden he was jerking around cussing etc. He had a burn mark where the ring was and his fingers were burned on the other hand trying to take the ring off. I forgot about that until now, it had to be 50 years ago and dad turns 100 next week.
Its at least 3amps up to 5. Just make a quick inverter from 12v to 120v and replace that with a regular home plug. Find space to mount inside so you only have one cable to plug into the wall. Nerd:)
No the compressor is AC car accessories are put out ac and home outlets are DC.

If you need more than 10 watts, you need a power supply that takes 110/220 V from the wall and outputs 12 V DC. It's a rectangle metal box with electric components inside.
Be very careful with the high voltage compartment obviously.
You can use a "female car cigarette lighter socket" or simply cut off the end and reveal the two cables of your car accessory. Then carefully insert the + and - to output of your power supply. Keep that in mind, DC devices WILL NOT WORK if polarity is wrong. I mean + needs to connect + and - to -. Otherwise you may (will) harm the device and power supply.
Also wattage calculation is really simple. Voltage × Amperage = Wattage
For example 12 Volts 10 Amps means that you need 120 watts to run the device properly. Although 10V 12A is also 120W, there's no guarantee that the device will work properly since it's not designed that way. Even if it works at a different Voltage, it may be harmful in the long term.
One thing you could have done is instead of hard connecting it you could have put a female end on the compressor and put a male connector on both the car charger and the wall plug

no no no dont cut the 12 v car plug. Put a female 12 v outlet car plug then you can use it in the car or inside.
I just want to say that the designer of the compressor is blind and the manufactory should be replaced soon, why not give it a normal plug? And I just bought this stupid thing today!!! we use it for bike tires or balls, why this kind of plug. since it comes with this specifical plug why not put a proper socket in its package? and I am so blind to buy this without figuring out how it works!!! It makes me cry.
well hope the pumps motor aint rated 56amp, good luck finding such DC adaptor lol but its aggravating AF how the assholes manufacturing this kind of garbage wont add a plug hole for the home adaptors with appropriate motor and mentioning minimum mAh adaptors you could plug in before you burn it out and possibly cause fire. Instead you have to buy a novelty pump AC/DC portable ones for triple the costs. Good business strategy. Ripping people off, as usual. Are we not used for this tactic for decades now. Paying tons of money for less quality stuff.
