The introduction (artificially composed from bits of the score), the clumsy conducting, and the scratchy orchestral playing are all substandard. However, Leontyne’s singing is very, VERY fine. Her tender, soft singing after 1:35 is especially exquisite. And the climax is totally secure and thrilling. This was a great concert.
