    Scotty is right on the money! If something is not broken... Don't fix it! I've been driving Land Rovers since 1974 and they can be a money pit if you don't maintain or fix things promptly. I have a mechanic who can tell you you what was wrong with the car within 5 minutes of checking and listening the car's engine. When my '99 Discovery needed a new alternator, I went to the Land Rover parts dealer (Korean guy who operated out of a rented garage) and got a new Bosch alternator ($199) and my mechanic replaced it and charged me $40! Other mechanics were charging me $500. He also gave directions how to replace the antifreeze tank, my cost was $140 for the part plus one hour of my own labor. He has given me many tips of what to listen to, or what to look for and how to do it by myself. I enjoy very much videos from British Atlantic, I can do brake repairs all by myself now. We need more honest people like Scotty. Presently, I drive a 2016 LR4 HSE LUX.

    My young and pregnant wife took our 1963 Ford Falcon to Sears for an oil change and new tires (circa 1975). It took them six hours, the girl was unusually patient sitting in the waiting room with two little ones and pregnant too. When I got home from work I checked to make sure everything was done properly. Well, they didn't change the oil, but they still charged us. It was still early afternoon so I had the wife put a stop payment on the check, then we waited. Sears customer service called in a couple of days. I was advised to bring the Falcon in and they would be happy to change the oil and filter. "Nope", I said, "Send a guy out with a jack, oil and filter. Change the oil in the driveway. My wife will then write you a check. Otherwise you can take us to court." The next day a guy came out and changed the oil and filter. I guess they wanted paid for the tires.

      No, they didn't want bad publicity. I once had a problem with Sears. Called their legal dept. in Chicago, spoke with one of their many lawyers and discussed elements of contract law. Had a check in a few days.

      @@BigEightiesNewWave The tires they sold my wife wore out in about 20K miles. I went to Discount Tire (America's Tire). I found out that Sears had installed tires that were too narrow, which makes for a smaller contact patch. More weight per square inch than the factory width tires, so they wear out faster. I was young, busy and dumb. I paid a little more, got the correct tires and they lasted three times as long. I've been doing business with Discount Tire every since. Two years ago I bought a set of tires from Discount Tire that only lasted a third of the 40K guarantee, they didn't even pro-rate the tires. In fact, they upgraded the tires instead of putting on the same ones. Love it when a company takes ownership of their mistakes.

      They lost in a lawsuit some years ago and had to quit many of their repairs. There are many places that work on cars, and from my experience the best thing it to know your vehicle and what needs done and talk to them about it and if they try to sell you on things you know it does not need go elsewhere. I have a place close to me that has good deals on tires and does it right. They also patched one of my tires in warranty. There are other places for other things. Key thing is knowing where to go to get work done when you don't feel like doing it yourself.

    Thanks Scotty for letting people know about common rip-offs.
    Just a week ago, one of my employees went to Firestone for the $10 car check up.
    She has a 2016 Chevy Trax with about 40K miles on it.
    They told her that she needed the radiator, transmission and brake flush.
    Plus spark plugs, cabin filter and air filter.
    About a $1000 dollars total.
    Just for the filters to be replaced was $92 dollars. They were using Napa filters that they were up charging 100% over cost. Plus charging her $30 dollars to install the cabin filter. Which is behind the glove box and requires no tools. Takes less time yo change then the air filter. Which there was no extra charge to install the air filter.
    Total rip-off.
    I bought both filters for less than $30 dollars and installed them for her.
    People, listen to Scotty and do a lot of your own vehicle service.
    They are instructions and videos everywhere that can show you how on just about any vehicle. Plus most just use simple tools that you can buy anywhere.
    Plus you have the satisfaction of doing the job and can now go buy you a steak dinner.

    • @mikebing1230

      Michael Cowan it’s not a rip off, they have to pay their techs to perform jobs. Every job has a set labor time decided by a national standard. Ever look at how much a roof costs? 8-10k. Know the parts cost? Maybe 1500-2500. You have to pay for a service, if you know how to do it, then do it yourself. If you don’t, then you gotta pay for that knowledge and time. It’s simple business.

    I took my 54 Nash in to get an alignment. The mechanic said the shocks were bad. I told him the shocks are factory originals and they're still good. I told him to pull one out and compare it to a new one. He pulled it out and did the "push/pull" test and agreed it was as good as the new one. He then said "since the job is half done why not just change the other one". I said the old shocks have done well for 65 years so let's just leave them alone. I won the argument. Besides, the car only has 350,000 miles on it. (4th engine)

    The thing about squeeky/shakey brakes is this - The parts are so common and cheap that after paying the 2 hours for labor to disassemble the brakes, clean and re-surface the rotors, and brake in the pads again, you might as well throw in an extra 100 dollars for all new parts instead of having them disassemble everything just to rebuild it. The tricky part is there are so many options and the pad materials change so much, you never really know what you're getting. You never know if your mechanic is taking their time to grease everything and apply brake goop where he should.
    That's why I have a C-clamp, jack, socket set, and torque wrench. Replacing pads and rotors was the first thing I taught myself because it is NOT a 400$ job.

    My AMC Gremlin's factory starter finally packed it in sometime in 2010. Yeah, a starter only lasted 40 years. Darn. Anyway, of course nobody could source me a new one, and it took the local old-timey rebuilder three days to rebuild my old one. But, Gremlin was my only car, and I still had to get to work! Luckily, my driveway is on a slight incline, and the place I worked, the parking lot was on a steep incline.
    Gremlin being a three speed, I could push it to the top of the driveway, get it rolling and pop the clutch to start it in the morning. When I got to work, I'd back in to the spot at the top of the lot, and after work, roll out of my spot pop the clutch and drive home.
    FOR THREE DAYS.

    Thanks - loving the series and I subscribed;
    Me - 23 years as a dealer service writer/director.
    Suspension:
    It's true but typically, shocks and struts are replaced based on manufacturer recommendations, not current performance. The ONE problem a customer can run into -
    -if the suspension part calls for replacement and the customer refuses, and if, somewhere down the road, in that 1/10,000 chance that part ends up causing damage to warrantied parts or repairs...the warranty can be voided.
    The one issue with shocks, struts and brakes for that matter they wear over time. So, the driver tends to get "used" to the degrading feel without noticing as it happens gradually, not like a part failure which is typically instantaneous. In fact, a common complaint after replacing suspension parts is "Now it rides like a truck!" with the customer not realizing that that was the original feel and not the pillow bounce made from worn out parts.
    Another way to determine is the suspension is going is when your passenger looks at you and says "You need new shocks!" or, you notice a much better ride in a similar style car than in yours.
    Oil Changes;
    Excellent point. especially about drivers who just keep adding oil. The most overlooked issue is that the oil filter would continually become more and more clogged until flow failure.
    Brakes;
    If you have a brake concern...always have a shop check them and tell you what the problem is and you can decide what, if anything, to do. Most shops will do this for free. Wear on one side may not match the inboard side, especially if a piece of road debris gets caught up in the caliper digging up the rotor.
    Always, ALWAYS, replaces brakes in front and/or rear pairs. That is not a scam but for safety.
    Brakes (stopping) and Steering (Control) are the only two systems that should be inspected by a professional.
    Why only those two; Because if there is a catastrophic failure, you can kill yourself, your passengers and/or other individuals.
    All other systems (engine, trans, drive-train, tires, electrical,) will most likely leave you stranded, waiting for the tow truck at worse.
    love your series, I subscribed, keep up the great work.

    I wouldn’t ever cheap out on tires or brakes, the former is the only thing touching the asphalt, and the latter is the only one that controls the deceleration of the former. I mean specifically in regards to the wheel shaking under heavy braking. Anything that causes a loss of control I can’t say, in good faith, should just be ignored. Most times it’s probably not necessary to change but if the wheel does shake, i think you need to change a part.

    The most important thing I have found on automatic transmissions is to change the oil and filter more often than in the book. I have a jeep that was not shifting correctly and the problem with the modern ones is that if there is moisture in the fluid it will do all kinds of unexpected things. If in doubt change the fluid as it is much cheaper than anything else you could have go wrong.

    You talked about warped front rotors. Well old rotors that warped on my 2011 Ranger wore out 9 month old tie rods. I was so relieved to finally replace the rotors last August because the bad ones shook the hell out of the truck. I even have a few videos showing the shaking.

    I stick my phone camera in the wheel spoke slots to check brake wear. Works great for inspection of many things.

    If you need to liven up a party; press mute on Scotty's video and put rap music on in the back ground. It's better then when MTV actually had music videos.

    If it's shaking when you come to a stop light but stops when you put it in neutral, it could be the motor mounts too

      I think it's a stupid toyota thing, I have 2008 Camry, proper clean tranny fluid level, replaced mounts and the dog bone up top, still shakes when in drive. Something to do with converter is my best guess. Not worth the money to dig deeper.

      Hey guys, it could be from higher rpm than the normal idle as some torque converters don't disengaging till rpm is low enough and I've seen it before in few cars that I've worked on, and normally automatic cars do have the tendency to keep high rpm when in drive at the traffic light with the brakes on and normally it's better to go in to neutral to stop the pressure from your gear box and your brakes (not that there is a lot of pressure on the brakes)

    True. Scams are more frequent now than in the past. At a recent State Inspection, I was told my car failed the emission test. I refused to have the car "fixed" immediately. When I arrived home, I noticed the gate to the gas cap was ajar. Inside, the gas cap was open. The inspector had removed the cap thus creating a "failure" notice. But the dummy failed to reset the cap.

    Akebono ceramic brake pads for the win! Been using them for a few years on my 2015 WRX with brake performance rotors (I forget exactly which ones they were but I know they are slotted and dimpled). In any case I did my research at the time and ultimately decided for the Akebono ceramic pads per Scotty's suggestion and its been a great buy!

    Last year my Subaru would randomly stop working for a few hours and then would be just fine again! Times when it didn’t work nothing turned on not even the clicker for the door opener would work. I take my car to my uncles shop and he looks at it for 10 minutes and tells me what was disconnected and didn’t charge me anything. Someone could of taken advantage and charged me sooo much!!! I love having a trusted mechanic
