I grew up in pretty main stream Evangelical churches and I really wish people understood how prevalent Zionism is. My grandparents gave thousands of dollars to Israel and resettlement programs because they believed that all the Jews needed to return to Israel so that Jesus could return. I remember seeing presentations about how they needed to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque so that the Temple could be rebuilt. I remember an Orthodox Jewish lady coming to my Bible College to tell us to support resettlement programs. It's so disturbing.

Sounds like animal sacrifice, something Americans associate with brutal primitive tribal societies, not modern religions. So I find it odd that anyone sees this as a sort of acceptable practice by what is seen as 'the most moral society' or 'only democracy in the middle east'. It actually makes sense that it's technically not a sacrifice: It's a purification ritual. The idea seems to be that the area is unclean and must be cleaned through this procedure. Presumably, the animals themselves become tainted (unclean) in the process and therefore unfit for godly consumption. This contrasts with the sacrifices they used to do in the Temple. In their case, the idea was that God is somehow offered the animals, as something like spiritual food. (Of course what really happened was that the Temple had the monopoly on slaughtering animals, and the priests got their parts of the animals for the service. This was a replacement for tax at the time when the Jews had been granted religious freedom but not political freedom. It is also the likely reason why pork was forbidden: Pigs were widespread among poor people, but the privileged didn't want to eat pork. So the priests had no interest in slaughtering pigs, but they also didn't want to make an exception for pigs, which would have created a tax loophole.)

Here's something I'm really happy to see discussed. I studied religion in college that was my under grad degree. There were lots of discussions about how religion impacted politics, but very few about how politics impacted religion. This is politics elevating fringe religious ideologies and making them mainstream. Then mainstream religions adopt them as THE ideology. I grew up in pretty main stream Evangelical churches and I really wish people understood how prevalent Zionism is. My grandparents gave thousands of dollars to Israel and resettlement programs because they believed that all the Jews needed to return to Israel so that Jesus could return. I remember seeing presentations about how they needed to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque so that the Temple could be rebuilt. I remember an Orthodox Jewish lady coming to my Bible College to tell us to support resettlement programs. It's so disturbing.

Sounds like animal sacrifice, something Americans associate with brutal primitive tribal societies, not modern religions. It actually makes sense that it's technically not a sacrifice: It's a purification ritual. The idea seems to be that the area is unclean and must be cleaned through this procedure. Presumably, the animals themselves become tainted (unclean) in the process and therefore unfit for godly consumption. This contrasts with the sacrifices they used to do in the Temple. In their case, the idea was that God is somehow offered the animals, as something like spiritual food. (Of course what really happened was that the Temple had the monopoly on slaughtering animals, and the priests got their parts of the animals for the service. This was a replacement for tax at the time when the Jews had been granted religious freedom but not political freedom. It is also the likely reason why pork was forbidden: Pigs were widespread among poor people, but the privileged didn't want to eat pork. So the priests had no interest in slaughtering pigs, but they also didn't want to make an exception for pigs, which would have created a tax loophole.)

Here's something I'm really happy to see discussed. I studied religion in college that was my under grad degree. There were lots of discussions about how religion impacted politics, but very few about how politics impacted religion. This is politics elevating fringe religious ideologies and making them mainstream. Then mainstream religions adopt them as THE ideology. I know neither of these gentlemen are religious scholars but I do appreciate them highlighting how religion is hijacked by politicians.
