  • Modular Podcast had the pleasure of checking the awesome new DrumBrute from Arturia with Source Distribution and captured plenty of footage while we were there. Here's a general product overview, Q&A and jam with soon distortion (which is ACE!). We go through the features and sounds but any questions fire away as always.

    Sounds fantastic. Excellent features and well thought out sequencing options at a great price. Congrats Ben on all these exclusives you are doing these days.

      How do you feel about the drumbrute a year later?

  • @ElectronicazMusic

    Fantastico! Love the ability to have a different length to each sound's part for endlessly changing patterns, let alone the random function!

      yeah lots of room for creating ever lasting patterns and variability.

    Glad I held back on buying the TR-8. Based on this demo alone, I know I'll prefer this box. The DrumBrute will be my next drum machine...It sounds amazing!

    Even better than the "official" showwheel for this crackling brutus maximus. The only thing I first was a bit "hmm" about were the cymbals, sounded a bit low pitch for me, but I see where they aim at to get that metallic feeling and not just use the classic cymbals. But then when I saw the individual outputs, it felt better. Just to be a bit creative there to get most of this bad boy. Thank you for another super overview!

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could take the meat of the drums as individual outputs then leave all cymbals in the main output and use the high pass filter to shape them all.

    Can this be used as a sequencer to trigger samples in Ableton Live, say? So in essence, you could assign any sound you wanted to each inbuilt sample, but it would be playing through your DAW with the DrumBrute just controlling the triggers, etc?

    can i hold a step, change the value of a drumvoice and those values are stored on the step and instantly switched when that step gets activated? much like i can do this on the Analog Rytm with the Parameter Locks - invented by Elektron btw ;-) Or is this feature reserved for the Pattern Effects on the Drumbrute?

    • @DivKid

      there's no P lock functionality. Old school analog the knobs set the values and that's it.

    maybe its my speakers, but the decay of the 808 style kick on the Brute isn't as long as the tr-8 is it? The Tr-8 kick decay lasts about 2 seconds when turned up all the way.

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, not sure to be honest. Don't have either unit to hand to AB it. However this video was done with the distributor and we just "did what we did". Did we turn it up and let it ring fully at any point?

    • @SourceDistributionTV
      @SourceDistributionTV 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IIRC, it's a little shorter, yes! Kick 2 takes around a full second at max decay.

      @DivKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the TR-8 is a strong drum machine too. Borrowed one for a while and enjoyed it. Both the TR-8 and this take to processing really well so adding in some FX with them really brings them both to life.

    @scottbrownNZ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It's nice but I think I expected something with more "brute factor" without having to run it through external effects. But hell, at that price I imagine we'll be hearing them everywhere soon!

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the thing with drums is we always hear them compressed and EQ'd. Especially samples and samplers etc. Very rare we hear raw analogue drums. I was pleasantly surprised they were just raw and thinner in places. Really appeals to me. I'll process it in and out of the box ... if/when I get one.

    • @marike1100
      @marike1100 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      17 analog voices, LP, HP, 12 outs, it's doubtful that a ton of people will complain about "brute factor", but who knows.

    Hi i was wondering if the outputs are CV because i was thinking of running it through a eurorack FX system,if not i surely need 12 VCA's to run this little monster.

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi DNA,
      they are audio and not CV. But CV isn't audio even in a modular system (in case there's any confusion there).
      You wouldn't need VCAs for CV or audio integration though. Are you just thinking of the amplitude differences in level between line and euro rack levels?

    • @_DNA.
      @_DNA. 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi friend thanks for your answer,actually i was thinking to use it through a eurorack FX system instead of getting fx pedals,but i was worried about the output signal hence if i would need VCA's to run before the Eurorack FX's

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most VCAs are actually voltage controlled attenuators not voltage controlled amplifiers in that they don't offer any amplification to boost a signal. Simple control from the input level down to nothing and back. So VCAs wouldn't help with level adjustment.
      A cheap option to external instruments would be the Doepfer A-119 External Instrument pre amp and envelope follower. There's also options from a company called LADIK that do a cheap but decent quality dual line in a small space. LADIK might be a good way to go. I

    can the kick be tweaked enough to get close to an Oberheim DMX sound?

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure as I don't have one of the drum machines to hand. I'd have to search to check out the DMX sound to remind myself. As those sound are sampled though I don't imagine it will get close.

  • @maccagrabme
    @maccagrabme 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think if you are going to add a kick modeled on the 808 and 909 then it needs to be able to accurately reproduce those sounds as well as being able to modify them further. The kicks aren't anywhere near deep enough considering its analogue, I don't need the high end sweep sounds on kicks, I just want window shattering low end. I would have left the tamb and disco sound out, they are crap.

    • @dxtrs_mnpltr

      littlegee couldn't agree more!

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      all fair enough. I think we had the kicks tuned a little high in places. I'd certainly have them lower for making beats myself. I thought the Disco Tom when it was really short made for a nice little thumpy tom like sound to play off the kick and toms. That's the beauty of all this gear though, it won't all appeal to everyone but some will really stand out for certain people.

    • @Heathcliff_hensel

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah there's no real thing to trying things in person. Ideally with / on your own equipment. If I'm buying something I take my own headphones that I know and work with all the time to try gear in any music shops. Much easier to judge. It's also fair enough that someone doesn't like the sound though.

    Really like the drumbute's palette, except for the punchy, 909-like kick... it seems to have a really narrow sweet-spot, and I've yet to hear it dialed in tight enough to be usable. As a not-an-808 drum machine, with some of the same vibe, it's totally worth the asking price, anyway. Might have to find a way to bend that 909 kick...

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd agree with the kick, sounds like the envelope isn't exponential enough to my ears. Also agree it's well worth the price, plenty of raw sounds to sculpt. I'm sure some pretty heavy compression could shape that kick, longish attack, fast release etc.

    • @7drone7
      @7drone7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya. Your prescription sounds like it'd get the best out of it. Accentuate the attack portion of the kick by stalling the compression 20-30ms, with the attack on the kick itself set as tight as is practical.
      In the various reviews, I find that people sort of clumsily torque on the parameters (of that kick in particular), so it's really not that clear what it's got to offer. The concern is that they're doing that on purpose on account of it being lack-luster - after all, that dial that adds 'click' seems like a kludge (kind of 'pasted' on top, weird latency.)
      If you happen to buy one first, please do consider uploading a video exploring the potential of that kick!

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's unlikely I'll be buying one, not because I think they're bad, but I've got the most bad-ass drum case with eurorack stuff at the minute I'd be silly to use anything else. Taken some planning but really happy with it. I'd ask the same of you too though, if you get one some exploration of the kick as audio or short video would be appreciated. I don't feel (like you) I've heard it properly yet.

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      shifting the tuning/tone of the hats and turning them down will sort that. Individual outs too if you want to remove them from the main outs and process.

      You could literally spend another 40 - 50 quid on a distortion pedal then you're sorted. Even better anyone with an existing collection of pedals, modular or outboard effects (like me) it can be processed tons with individual outs. I'm very very excited by the possibilities

    Is all analog made equal?!? How did they manage to keep the $$ down so low ? Are they going for volume sales? I LIKE the' 'sound' on this thing that's for sure. I will take this over the MFB ( good thing I didn't order the Tanzmaus)!
    I can't wait to hit the Drum Brute with a compressor or two in the studio ( it sounds like it needs it btw). I still love my TR8 ( it's kicks are so nicely balanced) and the TR s snares are very nice. I don't think TR8 is in comparison to this Arturia - they are sonically miles apart .
    I can't wait to download the 505 and 606 kits into my TR 8. 909*/808/707/727/606/505

      I work in the electronics industry, the components are really cheap like a reel of 3000 resistors is like $10. And the assembly of the PCBs can be done 20 minutes. Everything is automated and if the company has low overhead they can price low like Korg Minilogue and Behringer Deep 12.

      Thanks for that insight man, I wasn't really sure ( and still don't fully) know what analog is! I know its good and sounds. And I know doesn't have harsh digital artifacts. it just sounds expensive. I have some nice preamps and outboard gear with transformers and what not. Maybe I'm getting the two things mixed up in terms of parts and internals. Like, when transistors are hand wired.

    • @Heathcliff_hensel
      @Heathcliff_hensel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just keep reading, learning and looking into gear and methods etc. The endless learning is what I really like about the gear world and more specifically modular. Analog just refers to non digital in a blunt sense. Some of it's good, some amazing, some not great. Same for digital, sound amazing, some ok, some bad. I wouldn't rule digital out as any better or worse.

      OMG! That's amazing. So then obviously the company is not taking huge profits from individual units, but is focused on selling a lot. 😋 This is such an interesting thing because im in Southern California and I'm near both Analogue Haven and Noisebug, both synth focused Stores. Noise bug will not carry stuff according to the manager I'm friendly with because they don't get enough of a cut off suggested price point. So apparently Elektron doesn't offer a lot of profit for stores.
      Bravo Arturia! I'm a total newbie to Arturia. But this machine is going straight to number one on my want list.
      For me, the whole polyrhythms feature is number one feature, and is heavily featured in my own (progressive ambient) 🎶 music. Before I could only get this level of sophistication with the Manikin Schrittmacher, which is up to 1999usd depending on which country you buy it in.

      @DanielOttiniAudio 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Too bad! Almost perfect - it was a sure buy, but now I am going to have to consider how many input paths I have/will need to process via Eurorack. It would be nice if there was one module that could provide individual outs line to euro conversion (or alternately, it would have been nice if Arturia could have given us a boost switch - if that is too much to ask). Hate to be a whiner...impressive none-the-less!

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd expect and want line level myself for better wide range integration with other gear.
      In terms of inputs to euro levels there's a good few around. For multiple inputs to euro level the I/O module seem the best with 8 in and 8 out that come in and out on DB25 snake cables. So you could go jacks or XLRs to DB25 then into the modular. I'd like one of those :)

  • @novakattila
    @novakattila 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have both the Tr-8 and the DrumBrute. I'd say in the end the TR-8 is better for a variety of reasons if you want to sample it at least. I find the Clap and the Snare very weak and boring on the DrumBrute, needs quite a lot of processing to get something nice. The Kicks are powerful, the hats are however pretty wacky I'd say. I guess that really depends on what you're looking for. In the end I'd say you should spare 3 times as much money and buy the Analog Rytm and be done with it, then again, I find the Tr-8 much more fun to play with, and I'm a bit tired of analog snobbery.

      Digital has sounded good for a while, and it keeps improving. My take on the DrumBrute was as a raw analogue drum source it sounded good for then processing and mixing in with other things. Playful jam sessions and a decent sequencer etc.
