- Or lam is a very traditional Lao stew from Luang Prabang. This is my take at showing you my Or lam recipe Lao beef stew. It is made with many signature Lao ingredients like mai sakhaan chili wood, padaek unfiltered fish sauce, Lao basil lemon basil, and dill! Most of these ingredients can be found at Southeast Asian markets. Unfortunately, the mai sakhaan is only found in Laos.

Ate this sooo much growing up. One of the Lao dishes you don't really appreciate until you get a little older just like Giang Naw Mai (bitter bamboo soup). Thanks for the Video Saeng!
Yes I agree! I love this dish even more now that I’m older 🙏🙏🙏
I love that your videos are short yet still authentic with Lao OG taste buds lol . You explain things so well. Helpful for us Lao Americans that didn't get a chance to cook with family much. New subscriber here 👋

I just love this dish. Rarely do Lao restaurants have this in their menus. Definitely worth the effort.
Semi-unrelated but this just made me realize I need to spend more time with my mom and grandma learning their recipes

This dish and ant egg soup is what I always think of when remembering my Lao travels. I’ve always wondered what was that special flavour, which the sakhaan offers, amongst so many interesting herbs/ingredients. Thank you for posting this recipe.

I live in Miami and can't find any lao restaurants that make this stew.. any suggestions on how to get access to this without traveling so much?..
Is there any way to get mai sakaan in the US? I've never seen it sold anywhere.
I’ve never seen it sold in the US either. I was lucky to bring some over from Laos
Is there anything you would suggest as a substitute for sa-kahn? I’m making this for my grandma and want it to taste perfect 😊
You can try a tsp of whole black peppercorn and another tsp of whole Szechuan peppercorn
I used the horse radish lump about two inches cut , the results is pretty good
