Duke Fleed’s Stark Flash references the original Duke Fleed henshin! And I bet that’s not the only reference. Whether it is intentional or not, the Stark Flash might be a reference to Cutie Honey’s Honey Flash. 5. Ngl, the way Zeoladizer looks down at Grendizer feels like Zeoladizer is making fun of of Duke. 6. The title for episode 3 is “Guren no Ikari” (“Crimson Wrath” in English). The title might be a pun as “Guren” sounds the same as saying “Gren” in Japanese. So, the title has another meaning: “Wrath of Gren”. It might refer to Grendizer going berserk once more, or in another case, Duke. Also, Zeoladizer and Aquadizer are named after the middle name of their pilot (like Casado ZEOLA Whiter and Teronna AQUA Vega). This implies that Duke’s full name is “Duke GREN Fleed”. Now Duke and Maria’s names matches. And speaking of Maria, I bet that Maria’s mecha (if she becomes a Starker Knight, hypothetically speaking) might be named “Gracedizer”. LOL.

CH is in the manga and she's even a pop idol too which kinda makes her the Lynn Minmay of the manga minus the bad stuff from her. So the only way for Mazinger Z and Kouji to heal back their damaged parts is saying 'Mazin Flash!!' I thought that needed mention but here we are and I'm loving the deep cuts this anime does. 5:05, in the Gosaku Ota manga instead of a necklace that keeps Duke being attacked by Grendizer, he uses a ring for identification to Grendy instead of a necklace. Nice touch. 5:27, Kouji: OMG! What are you doing?! Duke: Umm, I don't think I'm good. Hikaru: Are you good...or evil? Me: Ooooh, what a cute little native person! Franklin, take a picture. (Yeah, this is what happens when I reference that 90's Pink Panther cartoon too much)
Ep 2 is more of a back story of how Duke escaped from Planet Fleed and was framed for the murder of his parents. It is pretty interesting that the shrine has the 3 tombstones that resemble the Spacer machines. Maybe they want to give Grendizer more mystical lore instead of just an alien machine robot. Hikaru's introduction is different but I think it is expected of her character to be living on an island all her life and not knowing how to properly interact with outsiders. It was hilarious that she actually has a smartphone that perhaps in Koji's mind was thinking she is not familiar with machines but then they have a TV set on the island as well. Yes, Casado is an asshole that deserves to get Space Thunder and Screw Crusher punch to nothing when Duke gets really pissed off in the next episode.
In regards to Cassado, given his last name, he might actually be based on "Ensign Whiter" from Episode 24 of the original Grendizer. Granted, they look nothing alike, but I believe he might've still been responsible for killing the king and queen of Planet Fleed (correct me if I'm mistaken). So it might be that they took a one-off character and expanded their role. On that note, between her different appearance and personality, the girl Duke and Koji talk to feels like she's Hikaru in-name-only.
Been a while since I've watched OG Grendizer all the way through, I did watch the first few episodes again before GU came out just to see a comparison, but perhaps a full rewatch should be in order to see what Okouchi and Fukuda implemented subtlely. Thank you for the comment!

And I agree, this Hikaru is far too different from the original but I will give it a pass since I know she wasn't very popular to begin with (which sadden me since I liked her) and the new version looks interesting.
Checking up several FB Mazinger groups im.part of, it is interesting the hate GU is getting. Mazinger was very popular in Latin America. Grendizer i think wasnt even shown. So i hear a bunch of.boomers saying (im 45 so im.part of the group) things like "i cant believe Mazinger was fucked up in the first ep!. I cant continue watching" and people trying to explain Grendizer was the 3rd evolution (lets call it) of the Mazinger franchise. And that the show is called GU and not Mazinger.
@@SINGAPORE-kl8ql mecha boomers have been like that, they can't seem to let a new generation take things in a new direction. The series hasn't had any kind of new entries over the decades, so we don't have generational evolution for different age groups to attach to, so we really only have the old guard chiming in. Well they were all designed by Go Nagai. And yes Grendizer succeeded Great Mazinger in the timeline. So it is an "evolution" in a way. Grendizer was succeeded by MazinKaiser ( as character ) who is more powerful than Grendizer, but has got nothing do with Grendizer since it succeeds Great Mazinger in the timeline. There are also God Mazinger and SKL MazinKaiser from different worlds. Yes they screwed up Mazinger Z here by making it TOO weak and Grendizer U TOO powerful. That was never the case in the OG. Although different, they were like upgrades, all using the same type of weapons, etc. Mazinger Z was never destroyed in Great Mazinger. And Great Mazinger wasn't totally lost in MazinKaiser. Both Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger existed intact in Grendizer vs Great Mazinger. Grendizer couldn't defeat Great Mazinger then, so how is it that Mazinger Z, it's predecessor be shown so weak and useless? In Grendizer U they did Mazinger Z real dirty. The powerscaling was bullshit.
It's a shame because I feel like Mazinger Z and it's character are far too present in Grendizer U, to the detriment of Grendizer characters. I like Mazinger but I hope we will see more Grendizer focused cast in the futur episodes.

I found episode 2 amazing, I loved it ! The changes to the previous story makes sense, I like the elements like a group of "knights" piloting mechas that looks similar. Casado is such a piece of s...t ! Naida had one of the best episode in the previous show and for me the most emotional one. I was happy to see her appear so early but shocked by Casado cruelty. She have bandages on her wrist... Hikari is maybe a little bit too different but she look interesting so I will wait before judging. I also love the voice actor for Gandal, he played very cool role in Saint Seiya (Rhadamanthys), Dragon Quest Dai (Vearn) and Attack on Ttan (the beast titan).

I grew up watching Grendizer in Arabic from Saudi Arabia in the 80s. Now I am watching your recaps of the reboot from the US. I have to say I don't like the idea of Duke/Grendizer destroying planet Fleed. I hope it is not true!

I wonder how Italy France are translating the -Dizer robots (gren and the enemies shown in ep 2). Because if you call it Goldorak for example, you lose the -Dizer name on all of them. Someone care to share on this topic?
In the original french show, the "-dizer" becomes "-ak". Instead of being named after the concept of the robots, they are named after the name of their pilot. One thing to know is that the french translation changed the name of everyone : Hikaru is called Venusia, Koji is called Alcor, and Maria is called Phenicia. So, Marine Spazer is named Venusiak and Double Spazer is named Alcorak. Drill Spazer is an exception, being built before the episode that introduces Maria. So it's called Fossoirak, after the french word for "To drill". Now, I don't know for sure if they're going to do the same thing in the reboot, nor if it could apply to the original robots of Grendizer U.

Do you think the Starker Knights is a good addition? I mean, it's a good idea and brings a lot more potential content to the table, but I feel like it can take away from Grendizer's uniqueness, in a way.
@@Kon_Kinoki hard to say at this point, it may feel trivial if Casado is really the only other knight that exists and Duke takes him out in the next couple episodes. And they're really only an addition because of Casado right now, so it'll be interesting how he plays out from here on
@@RevoSKL actually it's been confirmed that there is 1 or 2 other Starker Knights, and if I'm right, they each have a certain bond with Duke, I remember Rubina being a Starker, she was his bride, if I'm not mistaken. Who knows, maybe this'll be a good chance to see Duke's character develop.

I know he went back to Fleed at the end of the original, so maybe he wipes out the Starker Knights and goes back to Fleed? Maybe Koji will improve Mazinger Z using data from the fights between Grendizer and the others, I know Mazinger Z is destroyed right now, it could be possible!
