HOW DOES SHIP MOVE ?

  • A propeller is a rotating fan-like structure which is used to propel the ship by using the power generated and transmitted by the main engine of the ship. That's the most straightforward answer for one of the most common questions asked about ships - How Ship Run in Water? or How does ship move in water?
    The transmitted power is converted from rotational motion to generate a thrust which imparts momentum to the water, resulting in a force that acts on the ship and pushes it forward.
    Marine propellers are made from corrosion-resistant materials as they are made operational directly in seawater which is a corrosion accelerator. The materials used for making marine propeller are an alloy of aluminium and stainless steel. Other popular materials used are alloys of nickel, aluminium and bronze which are 10~15 % lighter than other materials and have higher strength.
    Let's see how the thrust generated by the propeller helps the ship to move forward or backwards and what are the effect of different types of trusts on ship's movement.

    In all of your animations the propeller is rotating in the wrong direction compared to your directional movement description.

    The propeller is a fascinating invention. The gradual change of pitch between middle of the axle and the tips gives it a beauty. The difference between a water propeller and an air propeller is also interesting. A water propeller is more round and wide while an air propeller is narrow and long. I understand it has to do with the difference in density and centrifugal force. An airplane could indeed use propeller shaped like a boat propeller, but it would not be as efficient. And if a vessel had an airplane propeller shaped propeller it would not withstand the forces and be broken.

    When ship moves ahead due to axial thrust generated by propeller the wake is generated along the surface of hull .where the velocity of watwr around the hull is same as the ship and decrease as the distance from this ship increases....
    This wake causes the deduction in thrust for propeller...
    Means when propeller is in open water and producing thrust will definitely more then the thrust produce by propeller when it is on aft of the ship ...This wake resistance is also called as augment of resistance

    1st question - What size of propellar shaft ?
    2nd question - what is the temprature of propellar shaft and shaft bearing ?

    • @elmaazouzkamal1565
      @elmaazouzkamal1565 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1st question : Depends on how many blades on the propeller and then its weight and of course the power of the engine in such a way to not waste the energy and be able to move the propeller blades.
      damage-inspector.com/calculation-shaft-diameter/
      2nd question : A cooling pump and lubrication system are used around the friction parts of the shaft(Even for cooling the engine) In some cases they use high pressure water pump whithout any pollution risk. No idea for the temperature values.

    When we walk we don't push the floor backwards with our feet. If this were the case and traction was applied on our soles we would instantly fall on our backs. Instead we lean forward and are constantly trying to fall on our face and constantly refrain from doing so by placing our legs alternately before us.

    Ttip velocity generated by ships blade is about 45 m per sec. Hence pressure ill be 8 kg per sq cm. How water from it can flow in horizontally. Only sub marine propeller can work efficiently, having tip circle /shroud to deflect radial component into horizontal

    What is the advantages of low noise propeller.

    • @marineinsight
      @marineinsight  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Low noise propellers has the following advantage:
      1. It maintains the pleasure and comfort of marine transportation (specially for yachts and cruise ships)
      2. War ships and submarines can travel without detection due to noise
      3. Whales and marine animals such as dolphins uses biosonar communication...which will get disturbed due to high noise of the propeller
      4. Reduces noise pollution

    So I decidd to use pump hub of diameter 50% of full impeller diameter. It is because the pressure distribution from hub center to blade tip in square proportion to diameter.. Also the pressure distributed along radious is in square proportion to diameter.

    Why propeller is aft

    • @marineinsight
      @marineinsight  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The aft location allows for a more efficient transfer of power from the engine to the propeller, as the propeller can be positioned directly in line with the shaft that connects the engine to the propeller. Additionally, placing the propeller at the aft of the ship allows for a more streamlined design, with less potential for the propeller to create drag or turbulence in the water.

    Why some different ship used 4 blades nd some ship used 3 blades

    • @marineinsight
      @marineinsight  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the ship type and characteristics (such as Diameter, Pitch, Blade Area and Shape)..
      - The less number of blades the more efficiency, the higher number of blades the smoothest and uniform performance. This must be always taken in consideration when selecting the proper

    Does a ship have only one propeller ?
    Why not put a support when one fails.

    • @marineinsight
      @marineinsight  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There can be two or even three propeller in one cargo ship. However, the most preferred count is one. This require a drive, which is a massive marine engine. If there are two propellers, it will need two engines. Propeller are strong enough and made up of anti corrosive material to survive at sea. There are very minimal case of loss of propeller hence ship operators prefers One propeller in a cargo ship as speed requirement is achieved by it.
