I'm sorry about your loss of the shovel... may it rest in peace in shovel's heaven. On a second note, if you're worried about background sounds, I think you can script the audio offline and then merge it with the video (I have seen this in other channels though I don't know how it's done) however, it didn't bother me at all... keep the good work!
Yes! I did some voice over a little bit in this one actually. It is just a change I am not used to but I will be working on improving it since trying to wait for cars to pass is making it take 4 times as long to make the videos! 😔. Thank you for the advice and thanks for watching!
I appreciate the detailed explanation. For a guy who has never done any of it, it's helpful for me because those are the details that keep me from starting.
I watch too many of these for someone who doesnt have a deck or place to put one. Question, I have seen a few people dump the dry bags of concrete mix into the hole then add water, is this good or bad in your opinion?
Thats what a lot of people do, and its rather dumb. Your mix needs an rather exact amount of water if you want to get the rated PSI. Mixing it in a hole is fine if you're putting up fence posts maybe, but a sure way to mess up anything actually needing support.
@15:48, you actually dont want a flat end on the sonontube top, you want a domed shape to keep water from standing on the top and damaging the concrete, you can then set those anchor bases in place which allows you to shift the anchor point after it dries, easy peasy.
I would say you had way too much water in your mixes. But in the end they will all work perfectly for what you are doing. Thumbs Up. I hope you just re-handled that shovel. There are years of life left in it yet.
You thought we'd leave after the sonotube explanation?!?!?!? 😏 No, no, no. Well damn, the shovel broke. You were already digging holes, just put it in and bury it proper. 🤣 Thanks for sharing. 🛠
@TheFixerHomeRepair Thanks! I've got 6 to set for a free standing deck so getting them all level is gonna be a trick. LOL...I think I'm gonna rent a transit. Is that the easiest method?
It would it be a good idea to build some roof on that deck, being that you pull a permit for it already. That would have protected the entrance from the elements.
@@TheFixerHomeRepair Best get your measurements now for some oak or ash to replace the wood incase you have an accidental break. Might want to look into someone that refurbishes old tools also. Just an idea, or a thought since I know that a craftsman is only as good as his tools, and that is a very functional beauty.
The saying is "If it's stupid but works, it's not stupid." from Murphy's Laws of Combat. RIP Faithful, trusted shovel. You did your jobs well and now it's time to rest.
Yes, they make sure you have sufficient footings before you pour the concrete. I guess it is better than them telling you its no good after they are poured. That would not be fun!
Very watery mix. I'd much rather give the box store $50 to rent a post hole digger to dig for me if I had more than a couple. Heck, even a couple I'd pay that, 5 minutes per hole and you have yourself an hour or two, and if you don't need a permit, can get your tubes in there and get done that day.

If I was your friend I would help you, even lend you my grade laser.
My unanchored bridge got washed away last week. So im looking to anchor in a new spot as step 1. Thanks for uploading
I've been watching for a year now and I love watching you build or fix things! Keep up the great work and rip shovel

Perfect I can now finish my front porch, I have been waiting for this for over a year, thank's for your video's.

As long as you mix it thoroughly!!!
Thanks

Nice job. Looking forward to seeing the deck build.
Thanks, Christofer!
I laughed harder than I should have when you're shovel broke 🤣
Very happy to watch this learned much. Thanks for a no-nonsense video
Good! I'm not the only one who breaks shovels!

I burned calories just watching you do everything by hand. Kudos to you, and great video!

I hate digging. But we all have to do it sometimes. Great video, thnx again!
Id just watched the stair demo earlier today so seeing this feels like a double win for the day haha
😂 Awesome! Thanks for checking them out!!
@@TheFixerHomeRepair you bet! Haha been a minute since I've been on TH-cam
I can dig it! Really enjoy all your videos.
Could you just trim off a bit of the sonotube making the edge of the rock part of the tube foundation?

😂 Thanks, friend!
excellent intro .... LOVE IT!!!! great vids all the time man CHEERS!

Curious, no need for rebar for a four foot hole?
You could make a temporary funnel from plywood, screws & strapping.
Once the cardboard dissolve, wouldn't it have a few mm gap between the soil and concrete?
RIP faithful shovel! He was too young to die 😭
I must admit I a tear for your poor shovel/spade. I will light a candle 🕯 for it 😉🤣
wouldnt it be better to put rebar in them?
Hey, quick question. What do you do if you encounter a shallow water table and the hole starts collapsing? Are there any methods to stabilize it?
Did you then pull out the tube after the concrete cured? If so, how?
Nope. It stays in the ground. Just cut the cardboard off at the surface and peel it off.

Aye nice transition!
Super helpful, thank you!
I think there's good editing programs that can silence background sounds
Nice video, and way too much water in your concrete mix. Concrete and water creates a chemical reaction and too much water weakens the final result.
Shouldn't u poor a 2x2 footing before u put the sonotube?
Well, now I know how it's done! I've got chores to do, but, "I'll be back" one comment, the First mistake, living in Mass
Dude, one look at that post hole digger and I instantly can tell that is a way better design!
Right!? They don’t make them like that anymore!

I'm tempted to ask which Squid decided cardboard tubes would be called 'Sonotubes' and how did that spread. hahaha
Do the building codes require rebar in the crete?
Brother that's way too much water in the concrete.

The poor shovel, time for a new handle. 🙂
RIP shovel lol
speaking of taping around the sides how's the first born doing ? lol rip spade
