    We always make fun of Ollie for getting dropped, but seriously, what we have to consider is that he's the only amateur among a ton of ex-pros so it'd be quite normal for him to be slower. And honestly, I'm a hundred percent sure he'd absolutely smoke any of us in a race.

    Nice! My bike is 14kg (22kg when fully loaded with laptop, etc, for work). I often get overtaken by fat guys on pro bikes, who don't even look like they're trying. I've always wondered what difference it would make to get a better bike, and I think this is a good indication.

    • @simonm1447
      @simonm1447 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      On the flat the rolling resistance has the most impact, the weight isn't that important as long as it's no gradient. Tires with less rolling resistance can make a recognizable difference here, for not too much costs. Typical commuter tires used for trekking or touring bikes have 3 to 4 times the rolling resistance compared to road bike tires pros use, but even simple, inexpensive road bike training tires (which have twice the rolling resistance compared to the most efficient pro tires) cut the rolling resistance in half compared to a typical touring bike tire.
      Of course a loaded commuter bike will never be as fast as a expensive road bike

    • @BozoTheBear
      @BozoTheBear 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@simonm1447 - cheers! will look into it when i next replace my tires - they'd be pretty cheap ones for sure.

    • @simonm1447
      @simonm1447 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @M570 I'm not a pro, but I can speak as a hobby cyclist and bicycle commuter. I have a couple of bikes (no real expensive ones), it makes a difference if I ride my converted road bike (which was once a trekking bike, around 13 kg), a mountain bike or my fat bike (11 cm wide tires have more rolling resistance than 28 mm wide ones on the road bike).
      With the same pedaling power I achieve 18 to 20 kmh with the fat bike, around 23 to 25 with the Mountain bike and 27 to 30 with the road bike.
      With the road bike I can overtake E Bikes (25 kmh) without problems, with the fat bike it's hard work to keep the speed with them at 25 km/h.

    • @BozoTheBear
      @BozoTheBear 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @M570 - wow, a few assumptions there! I'm 67kg, and very fit for an amateur. I've done more than 5000km since March, which is when I got a basic odometer. On flat tracks I can easily cruise at 30kph. There is a nice 3km track in a park where I sometimes do laps - I overtake virtually anybody going up the hill section (or any hill for that matter), but it seems that good bikes have considerably higher easy-cruising speeds - I reckon many people on such bikes do about 30-35kph with only a little effort (I have to work reasonably hard to maintain 30kph). My bike weighs about twice some of these, has wide tires, and cost about $500 (Australian).

    This is literally the main reason why I didn't start triathlon racing back in 2017 when I was seriously considering it. I was training at a YMCA swimming twice a week, running twice a week, and riding an electronic stationary bike. I was broke as hell, so I bought a $150 ''mountain'' bike from walmart, thinking I could use it for outside riding and then maybe rent a bike for my first triathlon (the 2017 Chaparral Lake Sprint Tri). But my first time riding that bike I quit after 10km when I was going WAY slower than the electronic bike normally said I go. I realized then how much of a difference price made, and I knew I didn't have the thousands of dollars to buy a 'real' bike. Four years later and I still can't imagine putting in tens of thousands of Canadian dollars into a hobby. I still swim, run and I finally bought a nicer bike that I use for weekly hour-long rides, and in the Summer to cruise through the beautiful mountain roads in Western Canada. That nicer bike is of course, the Eurobike you guys roasted for 10 minutes.

    • @sensam6155
      @sensam6155 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your bikes really cost 10,000 pounds each, then it would take the average Canadian 20 weeks to be able to afford one if they spent zero money on anything else (assuming median income for full time and taking income tax and sales tax into consideration). That's why I prefer MMA and have been doing that since 2019 instead of triathlon. No matter how much more money you spent on your trunks, gloves and mouthguard, at the end of the day it's YOU vs ME.

    • @simonm1447
      @simonm1447 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Eurobike may be heavy, but it could be improved over the time with some mid class components (the ones they use are pretty basic) for not too much costs to a decent bike for a hobby rider. A set of trekking bike front chain rings (48-38-28) could solve the problem of the low top gear inexpensively.
      A rough steel frame bike may be even an practical advantage (of course it's slower) over a lightweight but more fragile carbon frame for hobby use.

      Id be willing to bet the loss was due to psych reasons. There are plenty of scientific tests showing that bike weight, on road, is of negligible importance, even up hill. Go look them up, the 5% difference in uphill efficiency is more than made up for with his 20% better power output.(just guessing numbers)
      Give Andrew a week to adjust his expectations of that bike, and he would beat them up next time. Id put 1000$ down on that bet.
      Ive ridden bikes that were WAY heavier than my full suspension mountain bike, and the surprise of the weight really messes with your mind. Give him a week to adjust and he would be way way faster. Guaranteed.

    • @Kromaatikse
      @Kromaatikse 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With a comment like that, I had to go looking for what the stock gears actually are on that thing. If I'm reading these right, they're 42/34/24 on the front, 14/16/18/21/24/26/28 on the back. Plugging those into my spreadsheet reveals… *holy crap it really is that bad.*
      I now see why Alex complained about the top gear being too low in the original review - it's only 80 inches, not that it matters on a hill climb. The bottom gear is plenty low for climbing hills, which is the more typical mistake avoided, but they've clearly gone too far the other way. The bottom rear cogs are also the closest together, relatively speaking, which is the opposite of what you want, especially on a low-priced bike aimed at novices. Bearing in mind that double-shifts are nearly impossible due to the bad shifter positioning, I can imagine these gears being extremely annoying to ride on.
      A review I found elsewhere suggested a Shimano Claris crankset with 50/39/30 as a comparison. Dropping that in as a replacement, then deleting the practically redundant 26T rear cog in favour of a 34T granny, yields a much nicer gear sequence. The low gear is then below 24" and the high increases to 95", a perfectly acceptable range for a novice rider, and you get the closer gear ratios in the level-road range rather than in acceleration and climbing ranges.

    • @simonm1447
      @simonm1447 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kromaatikse I guess the gearing is made for hobby cyclists, who typically pedal with half the power at best of a pro cyclist, a hobby cyclist needs relatively low gearing for climbing, a pro not.
      The front chain rings (42/34/24) are the size used for cheap 3 x MTB drivetrains, the other common 3 x standard size is 48/38/28 for touring or trekking bikes. The components used are Tourney ones, stuff usable for occasional use (it's simple, basic stuff but it works within its limits).
      A change of the front chain rings to the touring size would reduce the problem with the low top gear.

    • @Kromaatikse
      @Kromaatikse 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simonm1447 No, the parts they used are *not* from the Tourney groupset - or at least, not all of them. I haven't been able to find *anyone* that makes that particular 14-28T cassette off the shelf (not even Microshift), and the Tourney groupset includes a 12-32T 7-speed option that would be far more suitable, giving gears both higher and lower than the range actually provided; the other Tourney cassette option is a 12-28T which is also more logically constructed (12-14-16-18-21-24-28) than what the Eurobike came with, and still offers a higher gear. The 24-34-42 crankset *could* be a Tourney part, but that doesn't excuse ignorance of the 28-38-48 crankset right next to it in the catalogue, numbers which I recently took *off* my hybrid in favour of a 26-36-48 crankset.
      I happened across a 21-speed mountain bike owned by my landlord's family this week, and counted the teeth on the cogs. It had 44/34/24 on the front and a 14-32T cassette (14-16-18-21-24-28-32) on the back. Perfectly logical for an inexpensive mountain bike, and actually gives a lower bottom gear than the Eurobike does.
      My point is that the Eurobike came with an absolutely atrocious gearset - inexcusably bad, IMHO - which contributes to its poor performance on the road. I also don't buy the argument that novices need lower gears; the Tourney 12-32T cassette and 28-38-48 crankset give a bottom gear only fractionally higher (23.4") than the stock one (22.9"), while increasing the top gear to 107" from 80" and giving plenty of options in between.

    • @simonm1447
      @simonm1447 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kromaatikse at least according to other websites which reviewed the bike (I don't have one of these) it don't has a cassette with a freehub, but a old style freewheel (with the freehub integrated into the cassette) , which is available in different sizes, but also in 14-28 for 7 speed. The derailleurs are also Tourney, I'm not sure where they got the front chain rings with the cranks (probably a riveted set, not bolted) but this is a standard part for a couple of Euros.
