After honorably serving his Country in WWII and donating two entire boxing gate purses to Uncle Sam's military establishment for the war cause . The U.S. governments, internal revenue service , hounded Joe Louis for the taxes and interest incurred on those two ,donated purses ,to the point he was forced out of retirement and back into the ring. He donated the entire gates of those two matches to the U.S. military yet was held responsible for taxes on money he never received. The next time you consider freedom and justice in the United States ..remember this !

Amazing, Ezzard defended his title 4 times & lost, understandably to Jersey Joe Walcott on his 5th defense, less than one year after fighting and defeating the Brown Bomber, Joe Louis. Sept. 1950 Ezzard wins the title over Louis, 5 fights later in July 1951, he loses to Joe Walcott...Ezzard Charles, 6 fights in less than a year, what an incredible boxer.

He isn't in prime best mode like he was in the late 30's to late 40's since you can tell he isn't firing his combinations as much and is a bit slower and heavier in general but isn't completely washed up fighter as Joe Louis was the number 1 contender after this fight from his 8 straight wins until Rocky put an end to it.
Ezzard had such class. He wanted to reign as champion in the same fashion as Joe Louis. That's class after a hard fight, hard to do. Salute Ezzard Charles!
It is a true honor to watch these two all time great fighters display their skills against each other. It is true Joe Louis' best days were behind him at this point, but he still displays a champions heart and gives it everything he has in a performance to be proud of against a younger, slicker and quicker Ezzard Charles.

You rarely hear this fight mentioned but this is an incredibly brutal fight. Ezzard Charles took a real beating. As did Joe Louis. For me in some ways when I watch Ezzard Charles I see Evander Holyfield. Their Styles and demeanors are similar. Joe Louis not quite the brown bomber of old here, not as fast and his reflexes have dulled. Unable to really pull the trigger. But he's still game, powerful, and cagey. Ezzard Charles moving giving angles, pop shotting but also standing in there and banging away with Louis being clearly the bigger man. I think this fight is a testament to both of these Great Hall of Fame Fighters. Joe Louis's Grit, determination, and experience versus Ezzard Charles desire, skill, and craftsmanship. Great fight by two of my most favorite fighters of all time thanks for the video.

Never seen this bout before. I knew that EC was supposed to be great, but it's amazing how he shut down Louis's offence in much of this fight. Of course, Louis was past his best, but he still had a lot of wins ahead of him, and he had a big size advantage. He was not shot at this point, but EC often made him look shot due to his effortless elusiveness and sharp punching.
Two great fighters. Joe Louis possibly went on far too long in the ring. However, Ezzard Charles was a superb boxer and athlete. Joe Louis will never be forgotten because he’s recognised by most people as one of the greatest heavyweights that ever fought in the ring.

After a 12 year Heavyweight Champion Reign, Joe Louis stepped for the first time in 12 years a Challenger. 1951 was a sad year. It twas the end of an era. Louis would lose to Charles and soon was taken out as a contender, Chasing Bums around the ring, people he could have knocked out in the 1st round. He finally was Knocked out by Rocky Marciano. And retired, He still owed the IRS 1.5 Million dollars in back taxes. And has he descended into Paranoia, He lost His star power. As more vocal Black Athletes like Muhammad Ali rose up. Louis was criticized for rolling over and not Paying attention to Civil Rights problems because he Was ill Equipped To deal with their Rage and Anger. And while White America Still knew who he was, He was seen as the last of an age. All of his contemporaries had died out. And too many he lived far to long. Joe Louis was a true American Hero, Athlete, And Icon. In an age of tyranny and War. He stood like a beacon of hope to Many suffering And Terrorized by an evil Dictator in Adolf Hitler.
Louis knocked out Primo Carnera, Max Baer, Max Schmeling, Jack Sharkey, James Braddock (The Cinderlla Man.) and Bliiy Conn twice in his prime. 4 former heavyweight Champions and the LHW champion (at a time when not much size seperated most HW's & LHW's. He also knocked out Jersey Joe Walcott, Joe Louis beat plenty of great fighters in his prime, and at least one ATG twice (both against Walcott one very disputed, the other stunning knock out.) when Joe was already past his best days.

These were two superb heavyweight boxers. Joe Louis of course was a legend but by 1950, he was slowing up and struggling against the younger Charles, who was a cagey and skilful boxer with fast hands. A magnificent contest between two wonderful fighters.
Louis was passed his prime and ONLY came back because of the racist people hounding him down for tax money, which Joe Louis didn't actually owe. They were robbing him and betrayed an American hero. Louis was passed it having been champion for 12 years. It's Louis that gets the credit for going 15 rounds against a fresh younger man.
Joe is past his prime here for sure. But Charles is such a good and smart boxer. If he had stayed at light heavy he probably would have been the best ever.
Agreed. He might have been too good for his own good, couldn't get a shot at the title which had he have, would have ruled that division for as long as he liked. Charles was 3 - 0 against Archie Moore at light heavy, too good for Moore. He has to be the best light heavy ever.

Without a doubt Joe Louis was one of the 5 greatest boxers in history, 12 years as world champion from 1937 to 1948 in 25 defenses. By this time in 1950 Ezzard Charles was at the peak of his career and fitness and yet it was still a tough fight for Charles. His only 3 defeats were against Max Schmeling in 1936 (when he was at his peak), 1950 against Charles and 1951 against Rocky Marciano, these last two already at the end of his career.
@@johntate5722 There was also the first fight against Jersey Joe Walcott in 1947 where Louis' split decision victory was hotly contested and in my opinion Walcott clearly won that fight. In the second confrontation in 1948, Louis' victory was clear.
@@claudio5944 Hard to say Walcott won the first one without full footage of the fight. I had to synchronize the radio broadcast of the second fight with the footage and the video leaves out a lot of the action. Rounds where Louis was clearly winning according to the radio did not seem like that at all in the footage because you could only see 20 seconds of the round. It's the same case with the first fight. We simply don't see Louis driving Walcott back, outjabbing him and pushing the action for most of the fight. We just see the short exchanges where Walcott looks good before he starts backing off again. It's interesting how all 3 judges gave him 6-7 rounds and no more. Walcott won half the fight, but that's not good enough to get the championship.
He's balding and looks very worn for mid 36 year old. How many parents back in the day told their kids they were 7 for 4 years or just didn't keep track of birthdays or dobs because they had so many kids records were crap? One can hear the great Don Dunphy In the background calling the play by play on radio... No dead air space.... The greatest announcer the fight game ever had... Sorry we couldn't hear all these fights through him.... Didn't miss a beat.
Joe definitely appears to have lost some quickness and reflexes by this time, but he was still Joe Louis. Charles was one of the great skilled ring masters.

This was an awful fight as Joe Louis was essentially a one-armed puncher with is left. It appeared that his right hand was hurt and only used it for a rare body punch especially in the second half of the fight. He had many opportunities to catch Charles with a hard right to the head. Was this fixed or did Louis have a broken right hand?
When Joe was in hospital due to a nervious breakdown or stress condition Marciano visited the hospital and gave them a brown paper bag full of money and said IOOK AFTER MY FRIEND .rocky trusted cash and helped his friends .great men great men.
I know charles just holding back at the later rounds, he could easily finish louis at that time, but i think charles put so much respect to louis anf that was very kind.
If Charles could've knocked Joe Louis out he would have, Charles fought a well thought out fight, he knew he was much quicker than Joe but respected Joe's punching power and craftiness because Joe did swell and cut him up under one eye, swollen eye, bloody nose. That was a crafty fight but two excellent fighters.
@@aarondigby9859, Ezzard looked up to Louis. After Kid Chocolate, Joe Louis was the man who a young Charles saw as his main inspiration as a young, new boxer. This fight also took place after the Sam Baroudi tragedy. With both of those thoughts in mind, it is fair to believe that in addition to Louis' grit and power, Charles wouldn't be so keen to go searching for a kayo that would have required him to physically punish his idol. Louis was no pushover, and Charles did not really go looking to knock people out with the same intensity as he did against Baurodi and beforehand. He almost hung up his gloves when Sam died.
reflexes go at different times for different fighters...I don't know if punishment and wear and tear speed up that loss of timing and reflexes or not, but age is just a number to fighters: a 30 year old may be rime or past it, it all depends upon how much their reflexes have slowed. One old fighter or another said he could see the punches coming, same as ever, but could no longer get out of the way. Louis here is simply ancient in boxing terms

malc jow In point of fact Carnera _was_ good. If you look at film there is nothing -absolutely nothing - to support the common misconception that he was either slow or clumsy. He was at least as fast and agile as Klitschko or Fury.
They go on about joshuas and furys size but nobody stops to see the MASSIVE ability advantage these smaller heavyweights had. They are just so much more savvy and skillful I highly doubt the size would do anything but make them a big target. I just can’t see in anyworld a milkbag like Fury besting them.
After watching Pro Boxing for over 6 Decades, IMO, Charles was a Good fighter and yes, he did beat the once great HW Champ Joe Louis at this point in his career, just came back for the money because as we all know Joe was in trouble with the IRS! Charles was not one of the greatest Heavy Weights of all time and this is proven when he fought the Great Rocky Marciano, who retired Undefeated! IMO, this was entertainment at best!

The fight is in the 9 th round and it almost reminds me of the George foreman , Jimmy Young fight . The bigger Foreman stalking the smaller faster Young . With Young suddenly lashing out as Foreman closed in.
Just wanted to add that there was still some of the old Louis in this fight but Charles was extremely quick ! 9 rounds Charles 4 rounds Louis and 1 even.
Joe was absolutely one of the great ones. No doubt. But the Cincinnati Cobra was no piker either. Never got the credit for being a terrific boxer he deserved. One person's opinion, of course.

If you listen 18 months Joe Louis was the undefeated heavyweight championship. He was a very much dangerous fighter in this bout

He also knocked out Jersey Joe Walcott, Joe Louis beat plenty of great fighters in his prime, and at least one ATG twice (both against Walcott one very disputed, the other stunning knock out.) when Joe was already past his best days.

These were two superb heavyweight boxers. Joe Louis of course was a legend but by 1950, he was slowing up and struggling against the younger Charles, who was a cagey and skilful boxer with fast hands. A magnificent contest between two wonderful fighters.
Charles was so much smaller than Louis at 34lbs lighter. There was only a 7 year age gap so Ezzard deserves credit.

Without a doubt Joe Louis was one of the 5 greatest boxers in history, 12 years as world champion from 1937 to 1948 in 25 defenses. By this time in 1950 Ezzard Charles was at the peak of his career and fitness and yet it was still a tough fight for Charles. His only 3 defeats were against Max Schmeling in 1936 (when he was at his peak), 1950 against Charles and 1951 against Rocky Marciano, these last two already at the end of his career.

I had to synchronize the radio broadcast of the second fight with the footage and the video leaves out a lot of the action. Rounds where Louis was clearly winning according to the radio did not seem like that at all in the footage because you could only see 20 seconds of the round.
It's the same case with the first fight. We simply don't see Louis driving Walcott back, outjabbing him and pushing the action for most of the fight. We just see the short exchanges where Walcott looks good before he starts backing off again.
It's interesting how all 3 judges gave him 6-7 rounds and no more. Walcott won half the fight, but that's not good enough to get the championship.

This was an awful fight as Joe Louis was essentially a one-armed puncher with is left. It appeared that his right hand was hurt and only used it for a rare body punch especially in the second half of the fight. He had many opportunities to catch Charles with a hard right to the head. Was this fixed or did Louis have a broken right hand?
When Joe was in hospital due to a nervious breakdown or stress condition Marciano visited the hospital and gave them a brown paper bag full of money and said IOOK AFTER MY FRIEND .rocky trusted cash and helped his friends .great men great men.

I know charles just holding back at the later rounds, he could easily finish louis at that time, but i think charles put so much respect to louis anf that was very kind.
If Charles could've knocked Joe Louis out he would have, Charles fought a well thought out fight, he knew he was much quicker than Joe but respected Joe's punching power and craftiness because Joe did swell and cut him up under one eye, swollen eye, bloody nose. That was a crafty fight but two excellent fighters.
@@aarondigby9859, Ezzard looked up to Louis. After Kid Chocolate, Joe Louis was the man who a young Charles saw as his main inspiration as a young, new boxer. This fight also took place after the Sam Baroudi tragedy. With both of those thoughts in mind, it is fair to believe that in addition to Louis' grit and power, Charles wouldn't be so keen to go searching for a kayo that would have required him to physically punish his idol. Louis was no pushover, and Charles did not really go looking to knock people out with the same intensity as he did against Baurodi and beforehand. He almost hung up his gloves when Sam died.

reflexes go at different times for different fighters...I don't know if punishment and wear and tear speed up that loss of timing and reflexes or not, but age is just a number to fighters: a 30 year old may be rime or past it, it all depends upon how much their reflexes have slowed. One old fighter or another said he could see the punches coming, same as ever, but could no longer get out of the way. Louis here is simply ancient in boxing terms
