I'm a UK peasant with my own house and married. I'm 37. I've watched my income slowly deteriorate despite working very hard. Swallowed up in debt interest and fuel costs. Combined with increasing food prices. The older generation my parents and grandparents have money due to massive shifts in house values which have been paid for by other people's debt. Children today unless they have a massive deposit they won't own a home and will be stuck in perpetual rent. The Empire enriched the Upper Class, a coal miner never benefited.
"Ooh look at Mr fancy pants with his own house" Just joking, regardless whether you're a home owner or not, the struggle in this country is real. I hope things get better for you mate, I hope one day I'll get on the property ladder too. Worked hard my whole life, still not there yet. Should have gone into accounting instead of architecture 🤣
Now take a look at Norway with its Sovereign Wealth Fund. The British government spaffed our oil money up the wall. As for the NHS nearly half the workforce are managers!
The longest suicide note in history as the Tory press styled Michael Foot’s 1981? Manifesto, and widely ridiculed, included plans for…a sovereign wealth fund.
I hear you, but you can't compare a country of 67 million people to Norway that has around 5.5 million. The UK has many people, services and things to spend money on which Norway does not, meaning they could afford over many decades to create a sovereign wealth fund of its current size.
Just like most countries empires, it's the government who get rich not the people. Still lasted over 400 years and I'm proud of that history regardless.
Yep. Britain was asking for massive loans from the United States for decades after WW2. The Nazi's destroyed them that badly even though the Brits were able to hold off the invasion before the US came in.

It's not because they honestly think Britain's opinion matters. It's to hide from their own population that very little governing actually goes on in Westminster. There is a party consensus already as to how the country is to be run, and much of Parliament pure theatre.
Uks problem is we still think we are a major power and have a weight to throw around in the world. It's like a warthog telling lions what the rules of the African plains are going to be.
This is what I am trying to tell people for age. The biggest problem of the UK is that they can’t get over the fact that they aren’t a superpower anymore. The only reason Brits wanted out of EU was because the French and Germans performed better. They couldn’t handle not being no. 1. they never overcome the loss of their beloved empire (slavery and colonialism). They should have sticked by the German and French side. Seriously pathetic. And then they spend all their tax money for a greedy royal family
no that's not the problem, world war II taught the UK it has to change. It did change. But the real problem is freedom, cheap travel and digital economy. The UK is a rentier economy, run by and for landlords and bankers. It had its chance to become a modern diversified knowledge economy in the 1990s and 2000s, and it blew it. Fiscal policy and monetary policy was set up for the benefit of rentiers rather than producers of actual goods and services. Half the population of the country thought the nation was actually getting richer as a result of buy-to-let and bankers' bonuses. Instead, it strangled the real economy. There was a second chance for a major course correction in 2009, after the financial crisis. This went to waste as well, as everybody scrambled to restore the status quo ante. Couple this with a lack of infrastructure investment and a mismatch of immigration levels with new housing stock, and you had a recipe for disaster. The tinderbox was there, Brexit lit the fuse, and here we are.
half right, the Government and the left are also guilty of shorting supply which benefits producers over consumers aka rentier economics. Fuel shortages by the green agenda, Housing shortages because of mass immigration, they are even shorting food supply by setting aside farmland. This is crazy shit.
Well put! I might add that the UK is now a 'ticking timebomb' primed to implode (not explode) sometime in the next 20 years; when it'll fall apart (break up) due to the diametrically opposing visions of the future that England and Scotland want, and have chosen to take. Because of these competing visions, something has to give - and unfortunately that 'something' will be the Union. This is not what I think might happen, but WILL happen, because Scotland wishes to be part of a European Trading Bloc, whereas England does not. Scotland also wants to play a role in shaping a new, more dynamic Europe. But England wants to be alone, and take on the world single handedly, despite being woefully ill-equipped to do so. And what of London? ...well, I believe that its importance in Europe will slowly decline over the same period (the next 20 years) ...in fact this is already beginning to happen now. I don't see London as Europe's no.1 Financial centre by 2040. I don't even see it as the second largest financial centre by then. It will have been overtaken by both Paris, and Amsterdam. All of this is the price of Brexit: and the epic mismanagement of the UK by successive Tory governments who have destroyed our economy, ruined our cities, and affected every aspect of our society and how it functions.

In light of the ongoing global economic crisis, it is crucial for everyone to prioritize investing in diverse sources of income that are not reliant on the government. This includes exploring opportunities in stocks, gold, silver, and digital currencies. Despite the challenging economic situation, it remains a favorable time to consider these investments.
The pathway to substantial returns doesn't solely rely on stocks with significant movements. Instead, it revolves around effectively managing risk relative to reward. By appropriately sizing your positions and capitalizing on your advantage repeatedly, you can progressively work towards achieving your financial goals. This principle applies across various investment approaches, whether it be long-term investing or day trading.
It's often true that people underestimate the importance of financial advisors until they feel the negative effects of emotional decision-making. I remember a few summers ago, after a tough divorce, when I needed a boost for my struggling business. The immigration issue is huge here. I think a majority of the UK citizens would love skilled to see contributing skilled workers come to the country and help improve things. The problem is a significant amount don’t do that. I live in a part of London where somewhere around 60-70% of the residents are Muslims from eastern countries that don’t work and rely on social welfare. They have over 5 kids and claim they’re suffering from overcrowding in their 2 bedroom council flat, so it’s down to the local government to rehouse them AGAIN.
Same here in Sweden mate, that's just how Muslims are unfortunately. I went to Berlin last year and guess what, it's the same bloody thing there as well.

This kind people from 3rd word bring part of me to shame. That's what kind of problem that I observed also! We need a productive migrant that is patriotic to the nation they came in, and while also have a strong work ethic that could contribute to local community that they lived in and assimilate. For example me, I always american at heart since young so I saw no future at my old country since my work ethics and taste in food and the liking for nice car were different. So after felt like an alien to my home country I came to usa a developed nation with a vision, and still put my ass to work hard to realize the dream I had. And assimilate perfectly with the local instead of making and helping "my people" from old country. The UK's future indeed looks very bleak and there's no-one with the capacity to turn it around. But I'm increasingly reading about similar problems in countries like Canada, New Zealand, Australia or the US where a lot of the problems we face here, such as living costs and housing, are problems in these places. Perhaps emigration is not the panacea people think it is.
This is what I wonder…where are all these people fleeing to. The entire Anglosphere and much of the developed West are plagued by the same problems eg housing, privatisation, employment, rising inequality etc. Some places may be marginally better than others but I can think of none that would justify the investment of time, energy and money required to move countries.

She destroyed a lot of industry outwith the financial jiggery pokery industry and the amount of actual stuff of value produced in Britain plummeted and the amount of destitution outwith the SE simply increased. Simplistic and niave overview especially with regauard to Thatcher, the Current UK Government and the imbalance of UK Tax burden, which falls on the lower classes. Thatcher stole all the Public Utilities including: The Post Office, Water, Rail, Telecomm, Gas and Electricity, she also sold BP oil, National Steel, The power gird, British Leyland, [Cars and Buses] and some smaller British owned banks, to foreign companies. The costs of this is hitting the UK 30 years later, when these companies are taking staggering amounts of money out of the UK, whilst paying no tax on that money, thus further inflating the UK tax burden on the lower classes. The Current Tory government have introduced the most corrupt, cronism based systems for public supply contracts, whilst continuing the privatisation of the NHS and Health services. Brexit is a complete and utter failure. One that was instgated at the behest of the mega-rich ,as the EU introduced the new law that made it illegal to avoid tax by moving money offshore to Tax Havens. The collapse of the UK is closer than people realise. Whole generations of UK voters are completely alienated from the Two party, Fist past the post electorial system. And the Tory Party face complete anyilation at the next election. Urgent change is needed.
"Tax burden, which falls on the lower classes" are you high? Make literally a few seconds of effort to look this up. Most of tax revenues do not come from the "lower classes". Half of the country only generates about 10% of tax revenue, the top 1% percent about 30% of it. You could not be more insanely off the mark if you tried. The top 10% of earners are 60% of our tax revenue is from. It is legit terrifying how insanely deluded you and people like you are, "LETS GET RID OF ALL THESE NASTY RICH PEOPLE" *country proceeds to insantly bankrupt itself as most of income gets on a jet to literally anywhere else*
Agree completely. Very surface level understanding of the UK is shown in this video, if you're gonna do an analysis of this kind, do your homework so you can inform people properly FFS.
This is a retard-level analysis that totally ignores the fundamental weaknesses of the Post-War Consensus. Absurd nationalisation and technocratic mismanagment ruined British prosperity long before Margret Thatcher.

The people who own and run the U.K. also own and run other countries, it’s not unusual for business owners to run down one business in favour of another.
Red Robby, was the typical destroyer of British Industry, don’t forget, our politicians gave away most of our solid manufacturing companies to the E U. Poland was one of the main beneficiaries of our industrial possessions.
The UK still has some of the largest companies in the world. Just because a couple failed motor companies went down hasn't changed the global perception of British brands. Triumph, land rover, Aston Martin, Bentley, rolls Royce etc are all still highly desirable brands
Almost ALL western countries have a population growth well below the minimum 2.4 needed to maintain a population, that's why the west has opened the doors!

I’m naturalised British and spent the majority of my life and my formative years here and I agree- Britain’s best days are behind it. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to get by here and it just isn’t worth it anymore. Inflation is high, cost of living is high, rents and housing affordability are gone, the NHS is crumbling, job opportunities and investments are dwindling and on top of that we’re in a period of the highest tax burden we’ve had in decades. The U.K. is a high tax country and doesn’t provide its citizens the opportunity to thrive. I don’t want to leave, but you’re not getting your value for money when you have to spend nearly half your income on taxes whilst the cost of everything’s keeping on going up. Just isn’t worth it to stay here anymore.

should I move to london? i have seen the crime on instagram and the immigrants, being 40% white in most places in suburbs around london. I do want to move there mind you simply because meeting young people here is so hard and London is so much easier to do loads more stuff. Mind you, housing costs is not a factor at all for this so keep that in mind.
The UK is in a downward spiral; this is clear to any observer inside or out. I'm thinking of where I could move to already, despite feeling shackled to the UK for various reasons.
Lets get this straight , public debt isnt a problem if you issue your debt in your own currency, i.e. the Uk issues the £, no other country can issue the £, same for the US, NZ etc. So public debt isnt a problem, what is a problem is private debt , which means that more people are leveraged and at risk of default or losing their home because of interest rate hikes, if they lose their home they could lose their job and leave the economy and become dependent on the state, also their assets can be hoovered up by the wealthy. We also have a lot of precarity in the UK, with people living pay slip to pay slip. The UK economy shifted from a manufacturing economy to a services based one which isnt really productive or less productive in my humble opinion, i.e. banking , insurance etc, doesnt fill pot holes or build hospitals , improve infrastructure etc. it just moves peoples and firms money around and speculates (this adds to the UK GDP, but adds no real value to the non finance sector). The UK also sold off many assets to private corps/interests, many not even operating within the UK. We are one of the only countries with fully privatised water and shit in our rivers. We have sold off all our gas storage, we import most of our food and our energy so we are prone to inflationary pressures. All the while the amount of millionaires and billionaires has increased. The economy was designed this way by policy and legislation , it could be turned around but there doesnt seem to be the political will to do so. The issues with an aging population isnt in the fact that the tax base collapses so public services will decline, the UK government could print as many £s as it needs to fund the NHS, it doesnt need back its own IOUS to fund anything , the issue is , are there the real reources available to purchase to move from private to public and is there a productive enough economy to absorb any additional demand from a demography shift from workers to pensioners. The UK govt offers very little in terms of child support, so i dont see anything changing in terms of a demography shift away from where we are heading and as we have absolutely toxified the narrative on immigration , then that will be a hurdle that no political party will countenance as well as the tariff barriers and Brexit so all in all, its bad
One of the most concise, level headed answers to alot of the problems in the uk. Nobody seems to realise this is very intentional and due to alot of gov policy. Massive wealth inequlity. It will balance out one day though, most fictional dysoptian stories forget that. Wealthy always need to generate money from someone. When the mass majority have got none. Whos earning
In the video, the author says that the UK has one of the lowest fertility rates in all of Europe with 1.61. Just went on google to check fertility rates: Italy - 1.3 Spain - 1.4 Poland -1.48 Hungary 1.55 Portugal - 1.36
They also said Scotland has a younger population than the rest of the uk, but is totally wrong, Scotland has the aging population, low immigration and high outward migration.. so many mistakes in this video
The numbers you were giving must be 2020/21 numbers. The UK reported a fertility rate of 1.49 in 2022. Which means in 2024, it’s probably dropped to around 1.42. The original point the video made about the “UK having one of the lowest birth rates in Europe” isn’t factually accurate. But it misses the point that even the healthiest European countries are still doing very poorly.
All of these problems have been exacerbated by grossly over-populating the country "massive public service obligations"? We have the most privatised public realm in the Western world and our state pension is also one of the lowest as is our spending on unemployment. Honestly America we've had quite enough of your way of doing things - your country has tent cities and people sleeping in their cars
You're spot on. The UK fought Napoleon to keep their right to trade with Russia, and that was before Russia had discovered enough fuel to supply the rest of the world.
What has happened is we've had 14 years of Tory rule. Austerity from 2010 meant no investment in public services, the effects of which aren't felt for several years (ie, now) where people become less healthy, struggle to get doctor's appointments under our once world-renowned NHS, public transport cuts meaning commuting to work gets harder, dentist's full to the brim with patients resulting in more hospitalization for those who have had to perform 'DIY dentistry' and end up getting infections, rising cost of living, shortening life expectancy, extremely low state housing scheme meaning thousands on housing waiting lists and many more people becoming homeless, a reduced birth rate because of many of these issues playing a factor in people deciding not to have a family because they simply cannot afford it financially or in terms of security as they grow older. There are probably a few dozen if not a 100 or so more things I could list, but these are basically the big take-aways for any foreign viewer outside the UK. What happens when you elect a government that cuts investment in services and raises taxes? Extreme inequality, the poor get poorer the rich get richer as they sit on their capital (property!) while the government gets so corrupt it gives handouts to it's friends and donors behind their backs while claiming that 'times are hard but vote for us next time and I promise it will get better'. Thank god we have an election on 4th July. It will be an 'Independence Day from the Tories'.
@@ruairievans I agree, I just find it amusing that people have forgotten that it was the previous Labour government that created most of these problems and more besides. Both parties are useless at best.
@poiujnbvcxdswq China is hardly taping off. They have grown into a 20 trillion economy. What they are doing right now is expanding the supply chain into countries like Vietnam and other part of South East Asia. We can actually see the result of that Vietnam actually increased its export by at least 10% over the last two years. Much of Vietnamese products were rebrand, or reassembled part from mainland China. In fact 80% of Vietnamese products were either come as fully assembled goods, or in parts from two countries South Korea and China. China has moved into offshoring some of its less profitable industries into Asia and Africa. Why is China viewed as a threat in the west, it is not just because it is a communist country but more importantly its tech sector is picking up the pace and will challenge the US in not just manufacturing but also tech sector. In contrast India which many in the west viewed as a possible manufacturing hub replacing China is at least 40 years behind.

I live in one of those run down industrial towns in the north of England and life is fine overall, my neighbours are from Portugal and have good jobs and love it here, work with good pay is hard to find in Portugal apparently. I do admittedly live in a good neighbourhood for the area but not particularly wealthy. That said we have lost a lot of engineering/manufacturing firms since the 1980's and you can't escape the feeling of malaise is the best way I can describe it. Retail is hanging on but there is no hustle and bustle anymore (thanks Amazon). I think this guy is right we need to stop all these negative tends while we still have skilled people to do it but the politicians need to start being honest and better quality. Cheap labour won't save us either; we need skilled immigrants in family units from anywhere. We have a lot going for us still but special interests are pulling us and our allies in the "developed" world down. All countries face similar challenges as change speeds up, fighting that change is not the answer and all of Europe in particular not just the EU is at a crossroads as signs of societies strains begin to show.
I live likewise but see a lot of high tech manufacturing in my area. We could help this if we made things easier to set up , gave some cheaper loans , increased tech education and still believed in our originality more.
The analysis about Brexit is entirely correct: the New York Times called it at the time "an act of collective madness". It has already done huge economic, social, political and reputational damage to the UK. However, there are a few things going for the British economy: it has an AI sector at least as big as that of France, it has world leading life sciences and research institutes (its universities are some of the best in the world, not matched by either Germany of France), and its video, gaming and film sector is one of the biggest in the world. The big uncertainty is political leadership. Since 2010 the country has been governed by a succession of shallow, incompetent, corrupt, self-serving and, in the case of Starmer, clueless prime ministers.
I wouldnt use the new york times as my source on europe.divorcing an authoritarian spouse could be the wrong thing to do economically but many people still do it.agree w all else you said.starmer is a sociopath.. so disappointing.
Some of those problems are unique but (declining fertility + mass immigration ) are not unique to the UK. Much of Europe and the USA (slightly different as a settler country) are doing the same. It's incorrect when some people prematurely think mass immigration is the answer to low fertility rates because either way it's simply not proven yet. Nobody knows yet if the positives will outweigh the negatives in the long run.
The reality is that only some countries in Europe suffer from a migrant problem. Mainly because the migrants themselves only want to live in a few European countries and skip the rest.
The problem with the Thatcherite solution to Britain’s issues, is you can only privatise once. There’s not much of a public realm to roll back. The NHS is a red herring, because in the next 20 years, the Boomers will give way to Gen Xers, who are not as numerous. There’s already significant private involvement in education at all levels. The railways, and various public utilities are already in private hands. When Thatcher put through her reforms, it helped that Britain was in relative terms, an equal country. Those are the only favourable poltical circumstances, you can successfully sell such an agenda to the public. But you can’t repeat this, in what is now one of the most unequal nations in the Global North. We have two parties, that see themselves as traumatised victims of the power of organised labour. The Tories blame powerful organised labour for the economic woes of the 70s. Labour blame powerful organised labour for the electoral losses in the 80s. Both parties have a trauma led vested interest, in making sure organised labour, never has that power again. It will restructure the economy and society, to ensure this is the case. Allowing managed decline of UK manufacturing, even to the detriment of national energy security and defence? So be it. Use migrant labour in the short term, to avoid investing in domestic labour long term? So be it. Not replace sold off social housing stock, and as a result, push down housing availability, and therefore increase rents. Whilst making ownership unrealistic, and have levels of homelessness, unseen in western societies? So be it. Britain is locked on for a massive revolution. But the problem with revolutions, is they usually in the complete opposite direction, those wishing for it, hoped for.
The railways and "various utilises" are not in private hands, their in the hands of government established and controlled monopolises and in directly in state hands via nationalised rails(Network Rail, rather important to maybe you know RUNNING A RAILWAY) or the National Grid which fits the description of the former. Same with water companies. State backed monopolies that are as massivly regulated as these are are pretty much in all but name just highly corrupt nationalised sectors. If they were actual private companies like Tesco or Morrisions etc. they'd be able to fail, they'd have competitors and they wouldn't be so fundamentally micro-managed by x new declaration made by the government. Their frankly the worse of both worlds option that politicians got bored with so never felt like actually committing to privatising them fully or nationalising them fully because it was politically hard to do. So you get self-interested people seeking profit for investors without the ability to fail and with the ability to rely end of the day totally on government bailout, all on top of a state enforced monopoly. Calling this situation privatised is such a balloon brained disingenuous insanity, literally none of the fundamental mechanics that make private enterprise better than the state run alternatives are there or at the very least able to properly function.
@@drdeadred851 You sound like a right wing libertarian equivalent of those Marxists, who scream ‘but the USSR wasn’t real socialism’. And likewise you seem to arguing for an idealistic ‘pure’ form of capitalism, that in reality, doesn’t exist. It’s not crony capitalism. Or corporatism. It IS capitalism. Like any other concept, it’s not immune from contradictions and trade offs. Its relationship with the nation state, in all its forms, is a case in point. It despises it, yet needs it at the same time. It still needs the state, to guarantee not only a legal framework, but always to maintain security and defence of that realm. It’s always yearned for ‘limited government’. But capitalism’s defenders have always been vague and ambiguous, about what that entails, when confronted with reality. And the complexities of individuals and societies. If you want to defend capitalism. Fine. That’s your right. But at least take ownership of these trade offs. And stop gaslighting people, with intellectual gymnastics.
10:24 "...the much anticipated trade deal with the United States seen as a key benefit of Brexit took 4 years to materialize it was pretty favorable to the Americans..." Where on earth did you get the idea that there has been any USA+UK trade deal. There hasn't been. There isn't one. You're not talking about the so-called "Statement of Mutual Co-operation on Economic Development and Trade Relations" with Texas, are you? The UK wanted to call it a trade agreement, but it literally says that it is "not an international agreement or treaty and as such does not create legally binding rights or obligations under domestic or international law". Texas does not have the authority to make trade agreements with other countries.
Why would you cite 2019-2021 trade figures, which naturally would be hugely affected by COVID, rather than the newest figures: 2019-2023, which shows nearly £160bn growth in exports? UK exports have more or less continued the trend of export growth pre-Brexit. £575.6bn exported in 2016, £864.5bn exported in 2023.
Because, in my opinion, the video poster has been paid to make a critical video about the UK. His thumbnail is identical to a similar video by "guru" that was posted around the same time and has broadly the same content.
The dependency problem is the least of the UKs pension worries. The UK abolished pensions in the 1990s and replaced them with Money Purchae Schemes (retirement savings, NOT pensions) which means that it will have fully transitioned from a system where the majority of private pensions were generous and provided a comfortable retirement to one where retirement savings are completely inadequate. The impact of this on Demand is going to be massive and cement the UK's decline from a wealthy nation to a middle income country.
Interesting, I'm not an expert in pension structures. But increasing the level of the safety net, having high quality public services and not fearing tax and spend according to all people's means, all seem like steps in the right direction.
@@Ryan4Labour Money Purchase is just worth less. Not completely worthless but worth significantly less than the way a real pension works. It means that reliance on the state pension component (which has its own issues) will dramatically increase over the next few years to decades and the long term cost of substandard retirement savings will further fuck an already fucked economy. On top of that you have the way the state pension works which isn't a problem in itself but is an issue due to the way that governments account for them. The way they are set up based on a ponzi system that isnt the smartest way to do it but the UK for all its economic woes is still a long way before it reaches the stage where that becomes an actual problem. But due to the way its accounted for its a problem already, forcing unnecessary rises in retirement age and as the birth rate is significantly below replacement level, requires massive levels of immigration.
I think it's important to note that for issues such as an ageing population, nearly every other western country will face it too. Not just japan and Germany.
Its not even that at this point its glaringly obvious england isnt safe at all and the countrys declining fast, i would put my money on poland since they say its relativly safe from the stats since they have basic policies on borders and invasion J could be wrong though
please use half a braincell and look beyond the propaganda of scapegoating of minority populations such as muslims (and trans folk, immigrants etc.) and blaming them for all the problems in the UK . Muslims make up less than 7% of the UK population and the majority are peaceful, community-oriented people who build businesses and contribute to the economy. The only 'problem' in the UK is the rise of extemist right wingers and genocidal zionists sitting in our government abetting the massacre of black and brown folk in the tens of thousands, but you will never call them extreme since they're white supremacists
As a born-and-bread British citizen, I am utterly devastated and angered at the same time to see my country be turned in to this humongous shitpile because of a government who only cares of expanding their and their mates' wallets and stamping out the working class. If my grandparents were still alive they would march down to Westminster and give them a strong ear full. Incompetent leaders and slack-handling executives has driven the UK into a wormhole that I don't think it can free itself from. Stuck-in-the-mud (or shit) so to say. Not to get too depressive or go on a rant but this country used to be so full of optimism, life and dare I say it, prosperity for growth. For me growing up in the 90's and 00's I had a lot of opportunities, things to work towards and the freedom to go down a specific path in life but now I see kids barely able to sustain going to school and/or college or successfully achieving their goals really gets to me. I have 2 kids of my own and I see it almost daily with their friends at school and their parents struggling to pay for their meals and their tuition fees for university. The people being most affected are the working class and I hold a huge fucking grudge and ever-growing anger towards my government or the people in charge of running the country. I hate them all equally. They are only in the "game" for one thing and that one thing is what we all need - money. But apparently there isn't enough to go around whilst they spend millions or potentially billions on things happening around the world and the rest of us in the UK are left with fuck all. I'd just like to point out to all those who spout nonsense about migration and immigrants, the UK wouldn't of been a powerhouse or an empire without foreign intervention and/or help. It's been this way for literally hundreds and hundreds of years but YES I do agree that the circumstances and the world has changed significantly since then but it still holds true to this day, it's just that migration as it currently stands, is not managed efficiently and/or morally in any way that it needs to be and this will be one of the hardest hitting factors for Why the UK will Lose the 2030's and beyond.
It looked a lot worse in 1979 - very grim indeed. But despite our small size and population, the UK still has a top ten economy on a par with India - with 15 times our population. Don't underestimate us!
We will be fine. The future will likely view this as we now view the 70s. Our global influence won’t really decline so long as we are a nuclear power and our economy will eventually get reworked. We just need to suffer through this bit first.
yes the 30s were a hard time. Though this time the right political path will win and all will be fixed. The traitors who sent down this path that ruined will be punished accordingly.
this! my family is from Bosnia. The Muslims in Bosnia are radical and don't want us Christians long-term, and they've out-populated us. I'm sometimes embarassed to even say that my family is from Bosnia, because everyone immediately thinks I'm a Muslim. I usually say Croatia... I don't want to be associated with them. They have radical groups there.
Wealth tax. Wealth tax. Wealth tax. Fix crumbling infrastructure. Curtail the growing chasm in wealth disparity, with its knock-on effects on the housing market and the growing nature of dependency on the assets of the uber wealthy in everyday life. Put money into practical skill internships and trades. Kick out foreign corporate ownership of our economy, or heavily tax their profits unless their pumped into improvements - transport, land, water. Stop stupid policies like Rwanda which will have no real impact on illegal immigration and predatory traffickers. Build lower and mid rent housing. Audit the education system to help stem the bleeding of teachers from the profession. A wealth tax doesn't make everything possible, but it would be a massive step in the right direction. It is almost universally supported, even amongst the wealthy. Income tax fairly taxes the working, a wealth tax will tax the incomes generated by the assets of the uber wealthy.
Imagine being one of these people who thinks taxing the wealthy will solve all our problems and won’t just cause all the wealthy to leave as they’ll have no reason to stay here and spend money anymore.
@@SuperJibulus A wealth tax would barely make a dent in their yearly incomes. Even when wealth was taxed at 90% here in the U.S. during the postwar era, none of our wealthy left.
Fr, I'm someone who has spent most of my life in nigeria (born in india) and people need to understand just how lucky they are to be born in the UK. Sure, if you have money, then you can live like a king in some third world country, but no country will give you the same opportunities even the lower class get in the UK. (except for the rest of the developed world of course and some parts of china/India/Brazil)
This was a very informative and well-made video. Speaking as a Brit, I'm always hesitant to hear what foreigners think about our political situation, but your analysis seems to be very much on the ball. In honesty though, a lot of the problems you are describing that await the UK can easily be replicated elsewhere in many other European countries (and perhaps America too)-since globally around the world fertility rates are collapsing. Our government and civil service are lazy, and sees immigration as a convenient, effortless method of forestalling the inevitable ageing demographic imbalance and isn't bothering to resort to more common sense alternatives-like automation, mechanisation, or offering to train its own younger people to help sustain its increasingly burdened public services. In addition to that, there is an ideological (bordering on religious) component towards immigration-the idea that we, as a former Empire who colonised the world and washed it pink, have to atone for our sins after centuries of colonialism. That, in addition to factors such as the balance of power in our governance has also changed. No amount of social reforms we, as a nation, could pass would happen in a vacuum-the United Nations and IMF would all pass comment upon it. If we were to take radical steps to reform our economy, it would severely impact and complicate our relationships with other countries in the world. IE: We chose to stop importing cheap labour from India or Pakistan and tried to organise our own workforce, or we tried to limit the amount of real estate that foreign residents were able to hold in our housing market. I don't see our government having the cojones to pull this off-particularly when many people in our government are more beholden to special interests than their own constituents.
As you seem to switch between saying England, Britain and the UK without apparently understanding that they mean different things makes it clear you have limited knowledge or authority to speak on this topic. Example- there was no English Navy after the Act of Union (1707); after this date it is the British Navy.
@@AndyHenderson26 To give a personal annecdote, I went to Ireland with my familly , told my brother in law that the Irish feel different from the English, after a couple hours he told me that he didn't see any difference and he lived in Wales and England for a couple years. Everyone in the British isles is basicallly the same, it's like the Balkan where everyone think they are different but they are basically the same.
@@Perrirodan1 If the distinction is , as you say, unimportant then What prejudice makes you say “You may as well all be English” rather than “You may as well all be Scottish”?
@@ianyoung6881 Because England is obviously dominating the Isles, and also they speak English, not Scottish, not Welsh, not Irish. All those people were already very similar, then the English came to dominate and leveled out the small differance with the dominance of English culture. The real reason why the people there want to identify with a different adjective to English is because it's chaffing to the fact England dominates them all. But in practical term to a foreigner they are the same. To sum it up it's more a question of feelings and political affairs than geniune difference.
As a Brit, this is all broadly correct. But more recently the SNP (who run Scotland) are going through a major crisis at the moment so Scottish independence very unlikely now compared to 10 years ago
@@NicholasEV1986 But the SNP aren't as left wing anymore. Either they will vote Labour or they will vote Green. Greens support independence but again the votes will be split up due to FPTP.
Aaron, I think what you are missing is that the real split in the UK isn't between Scotland and England, but between London and the relatively impoverished North of England - you picked up on the closure of manufacturing industry in favour of finance and services in LONDON, done to emasculate the trade unions (working classes) it mainly employs rich people, that, the rich/poor divide is really what stymies our economy. Where I live hasn't really got an economy at all, it used to be Coal Mining and Railway Locomotive/vehicle manufacture. The bigotry between classes in England has to be seen to be believed, middle-class Londoners preferring to converse with people from anywhere else in the World but often scared of Northerners. The brexit vote has shored up these divisions, the London middle-classes couldn't understand why we weren't bothered that we would find it difficult to buy a retirement gite in France, it was spoiling their party ....... so they call us names , 'racist' being the main accusation , but we live in one of the most racially mixed societies in the World so how does that work? I guarantee several contributors below just think we are racist plebs, I think Keir Starmer does ........
Many people in the UK still live in the facade that we remain an extremely dominant hard power on the global stage. We're not. We are in a significant decline and chronically lacking in access to public services compared to the "poorer" and the "least economically productive" countries within the EU and Europe as a whole.
Hey, UK Resident here, home owner and married, agree with other comments my wage is slowly being dwindled away due to a constant hike in cost of living.. country is on it knews because for the last 14 years its been run by greedy politicians that profit from their crimes yet we suffer. Rishi Sunaks family personally profited from Covid and many other politicians have stock in phyiser.. imagine that, we’d be arrested for inside trading..
The largest threat to the UK is mass immigration, native population and culture replacement, the very identity of what it is to be English or Scottish etc ..
who opened the flood gates for mass immigration????who kept it going all these years and did nothing about it???? yes i will vote for no government they are all crap and non of them are for the people i seriously find it hard when I see all of them flawed in their plans and lies........
I'd say 1/5 people being a pensioner in the UK can also resemble good health care, allowing people to live for a long time to the point where you are a big statistic.
"The decade ahead could see the UK losing its permanent seat on the UN Security Council." That wouldn't even be possible because the seat is permanent. How this would happen under a scenario where Scotland would leave the union I don't know though.
We lost the 'Great' part of Britain a long time ago, I'm 52 and I've watched the countrys decline since the 80s, and it's a completely different country now, and not in a good way.
This is a great summary of current situation in the UK, however what hasn't been mentioned is how AI will play a role in workforce dynamics. There is a chance that aging population won't matter that much in 10-20 years due to AI taking over the jobs. Obviously there are other dangers that are coming from it, but it's worth considering this factor.
I hope the UK can somehow recover and properly prosper going forward. Clearly the UK has unfathomably potential to be great if put to good hands that is. The options who's supposed to rule is just pathetically weak.
@@recur68 to be honest i don't really think british people have what it takes in terms of war other than intelligence gathering. Whenever they're in a battlefield they just keep swearing and whining.
it will. Fascism will fix it. It fixed Germany. Tis growing fast the media will try hide it but they will fall. it started small in 1920s then blew up hard. the conditions are right again. this time nothing will stop it. 30s that all kicked off. History repeats. Happening all over Europe too.
The people that built this once great nation have died and their culture has gone with them. The british of today are of poor quality in comparison. Speak to the young adults of this nation and you will see that things are to get worse, before they get better. If they get better at all..
haha dont be stupid, the people who built the nation, still run it today - do you think any of this doesnt work in their favour! the house of lords is heridtary, they are very the same ones who built this infrastructure running it. Yes our ancestors who farmed and mined and sewed and worked from toddlers, did their building too, but they were never the ones in power and still arent. thye didnt build these systems, and their descendants are not profiting now. im simplyinging ofcourse, but generally this is true. this mess is just want the rich want, and good job too cos they are the ones doing it. the global rich love the uk, it will quite a global sweetspot post climit change etc
The people ot Britain have voted for short term plans ,voted for a Tory Government who sold of the family silver ,voted for a government who took away long term plans ,an who replaced them with short term idolatry. Which as left the country bankrupt.
the uk voting system is not fair let me explain; we have two major right wing parties really the main one being tories, conservatives, histoically the cons were seen as the only proper party to vote for, sensible and true if you did not vote for them you were seen as an extremeist im talkibg like 1940s-1960s, winston churchill eg was a conservative, a much admired man. these days you got like 5 very popular left wing parties, labour, lib dem, green, and a few more, cos of first past the post, its always swayed towards the right, theres only two big vote getters in the right, with the big boy vote getter being the tories, about 60% of the vote is usually split between the left parties, abour, lib dem, green etc then, then 30% is concentarted on the cons, it was designed this way, to be swayed towards the cons, by the rich. so people have to really really dislike the cons, and HAVE to vote strategically in order to get labour in, the only hope of MP from the left, cos of first past the post, its rigged to be this way., We need weighted voting, and to abolsoish the house of lords. even though weighted voting risks extremeost dangerous parties getting in cos it gives so much more control to the people, the parties we have i.e. tories are so extremem and dangerous, essentially the super rich inherited this house of lords, and the tory party, lie 80% of them went to this school eton only super super rich kids can get into, they know its swayed towards them, so they sold it out, sold the country out, its been downhill since thatcher anyway, milk snatcher, they sung the witch is dead in the streets the day she died they hated that woman so much. Its to say brtian is complex, and political system is shit. my great granddad was working down the mines at 5 years old, we've always been sick with wealth desparity and abuse. nothings changedm, same system built and run by the samer people. they were never stupid the people or the politicans, the rich thye hide but are clever and built the system cleverly, the poor as always suffer. brexit vote was fixed too, they won by half a percent, dodgy
i cant be asked to explain this properly cos probs noone will read it, but thtis is the truth, the system is broken. and it needs to be ficed. tories very very rich are all profiting off underfunding the nhs, they are deliberately destroying it, underfunding schools, breaking everything. they want this pretty country as a tax haven, for the mega rich and us working class [middle class is lies, anyone who workes for a living is working class, middle class lies invented to divide workers] , down the mines once more where this time we will stay
with cons being 30% of the voyte, probs is, with first past the post only labour or cons can win, cos labour is left it's vote is always split between the 5 parties, all quite sensible. meaning cons always win, unless extreme no vote for them.
I would like to point out that Scotland is not the only British country showing signs of independence. People often don't realise the UK is made up of four countries; England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The whole Island of Ireland used to be apart of the UK, but after fighting for their independence in the 1920s, Britain granted independence to the country. However, the North of Ireland was to remain part of the UK, as in it lived many descendants of English and Scottish colonialists (known collectively as Unionists) who still wished to remain part of Britian. 26 of the 32 Counties of Ireland would form the "Free State" (Later declared the Repbulic of Ireland in 1949), whilst the remaining 6 counties became known as the country of Northern Ireland. However, in recent years there have been increasing signs that Northern Ireland is on path to reunite with the rest of Ireland. In 2022, Sinn Fein, a nationalist party (nationalists being people who wish for Irish reunification) became the largest political party in the Northern Irish Parliament of Stormont for the first time. Additionally, in the 2021 census, it was recorded that there were now more Nationalists than Unionists in Northern Ireland, and there has been a decrease in the amount of people identifying as British and an increase in the amount of people identifying as Irish. Now, all in all, Northern Ireland is not that significant to the UK. With a population of 1.8 million, we make up about 2% of the overall UK population, don't really contribute much to the economy and the loss of landmass will not be a huge blow to the UK. The only real advantage Northern Ireland provides are ports that are slightly closer to the US. Infact, we actually cause the Britian a good bit of trouble, from the violent 30 years conflicts of "The Troubles" from the 1960s-90s, along with the bother we caused in thr aftermath of Brexit, as the UK technically shares a land border with the EU due to the Repbulic of Ireland being an EU member state. However, whether it be Irish Reunification or Scottish independence, whichever one happens first will certainly have a knock on effect to the other. Plus, after the loss of the Empire in the 20th century, the breakup of the UK will truely signal how it is not the once great international power it was. And of course, most important of all, the leaving of Northern Ireland from the Union many lead to the changing of the iconic Union Jack. The Irish government has projected reunification in the next ten years, but whenever it happens, it will probably be felt more than Northern Ireland ever was apart of the Union.
Well, If the UK has these Problems, then what should the Germans say, with their Energy Prices and the highest Taxes on Earth - I am literally am a high paid in this country as a software developer and have struggles
Maybe inform yourself a bit by looking for spending power in Germany and in the UK. You will find that "UK households are on average 8.800 GBP per year worse off than those in Germany or France" as well as "Living standards in UK have lagged behind those in Germany and US for years". You may be paying higher taxes in Germany but therefore you enjoy mostly functioning public services like usually getting a dentist appointment within a day or maximum a week while it can take years in the UK. Or things like the Deutschlandticket where you can use all buses, teams and trains all over Germany for 49 Euro per month or even 34 if you get it as a job ticket, ...
@@yusufe.t7603 I spoke of Germany where I always got an appointment with my dentist within a week and usually on the next day, often even on the same day if I wanted to. This has not changed throughout the past 5 decades for me and I also have not heard of long waiting times of friends and family members, either.
@@jamesn0va I'm glad for you but why would anyone pull out their teeth themselves if what you got was available to everyone? Additional question: Was this part of everybody's NHS coverage or did you pay extra for it? "Do not believe everything the media tells you". I do not rely on one source of media, I follow news from various countries in 4 languages plus I watch "independent" news like this clip, follow podcasts and read news so I think I get a quite balanced view of things. Amongst others, MPs address the problems in the House of Commons again and again. They would not if there were no problems. Besides, my son lives in the West Midlands and was so far not able to even get a first appointment with a dentist there, so he comes over twice a year to visit mine here. Plus, tell me if you think that the video "Massive queue outside new dental practice in the hope of getting NHS dental care" or various others reporting about this "incident" we're exaggerated. If they were not, there is obviously a massive problem with dental care in the UK unless you are willing and able to pay for it on top of your NHS coverage.
Left the UK for Australia in 2001. Every 4 years I go back and its a little bit erm... not as prosperous and happy. The relatives we left there ask us for money.
I rather dislike the statement "the mismanagement of brexit". Brexit was a suicidal concept that could not be "mismanaged" equally as much as one cannot "mismanage" ones flight off the side of a cliff after one has jumped. 2:53 Britain did not "win ww2". The allies did. Britain alone would have been crushed. 3:55 I doubt that. Quality and a bizarre arrogance in the British car manufacturing scene never allowed for a worldwide acceptance. The consistent lack of interest in precision and innovation (though there were a few) as well as proper quality control and most importantly listening to what the people/markets desired meant that other more flexible and innovative nations simply knocked the British car makers out of the way. We won't even talk about the strikes. British made cars were simply axiomatic to failure the moment they left the factory, the cars always took near on last place in any comparison tests with other makers, especially German car makers. The cars were also always slower and often less economical along with much poorer service networks around the world, and cars broke down more often back then meaning "service" was an important support to the respective car makers.
britain would not have "been crushed" on its own in world war 2, they were on there own in world war 2 for about a year, yet i dont think the grand germany navy of cardboard cutouts could have defeated the royal navy
Imagine tjat people outside the country are propagandised to like you are. Yes, brexit has been mismanaged. For a start it hasn't actually happened, and the elites obviously intend to get back in. And remember, you are siding with the elites. Which should tell you everything you need to know.
Yeah, it's overly pessimistic to say Britain would've been 'crushed' - Britain had the largest navy in the world at the time which does rather complicate operation sealion. What I find more likely is an ongoing isolation possibly with very limited operations in the south of Europe in support of local uprisings, a little bit like in the Napoleonic wars, until the Soviet Union got involved, presumably ending with the majority of Europe being communist. That last point is probably a reason to expect the US would get involved anyway
Most students I know are planning to move to places like South Korea and Australia because you just can’t make enough money to live here. Especially in London where all the jobs are
The point about high taxes is exactly 100% wrong. Young people, who might want to start a family, should gladly fork over a large percentage of their paycheck in order to receive high quality health care, day care, education, public services, etc (ref. Scandinavia). It's corporate greed that convinces laymen to fight for low taxes - against their own better interest.
Weak leadership is the issue. At least Margaret Thatcher had a backbone like Winston Churchill did. All of Boris Johnson's bluster was nonsense and he backed down every step of the way. Sunak has proven to be incredibly weak and I have no faith that Kier Starmer will be any better. I don't know what happened to our backbone, I really don't, we have gotten really weak, pathetic, and servile over the decades and our strong spines and strong stoicism is a thing of the past. We don't get stronger leadership, we will continue our decline indefinitely.
No offence mate, but you guys had you're time, you were a superpower in the 18th, 19th and the first half of 20th century, the Americans will start to decline by the end of this century and China will take America's place then after China it might India. That's just how it works.
Many adults were denied the vote in the Referendum, 3 million, sufficient to have changed the outcome; and the problems of Brexit were not "unexpected" but entirely predicted, set out in detail, and ignored.

Couldn't have put it better. Spot on
half right, the Government and the left are also guilty of shorting supply which benefits producers over consumers aka rentier economics.

The immigration issue is huge here. I think a majority of the UK citizens would love skilled to see contributing skilled workers come to the country and help improve things. The problem is a significant amount don’t do that.

You also didnt mention some of our problems have been exacerbated by political incompetence and some decisions have been made not for economic reasons but political and ideological reasons.
I'd take you comment further, all of our problems are due to incompetence, so much so I believe this is a totally managed and purposeful Decline.
It's not incompetence they are doing it intentionally.

Yeah I moved back from dubai to London in 2018 what a mistake lol its an absoulte volcano of shit and its erupting in front of me 😂
should I move to london? i have seen the crime on instagram and the immigrants, being 40% white in most places in suburbs around london.
Leave then, you clearly don't have the grit to help fix this country. We don't need more self serving, self loathing whingers.
The UK govt offers very little in terms of child support, so i dont see anything changing in terms of a demography shift away from where we are heading and as we have absolutely toxified the narrative on immigration , then that will be a hurdle that no political party will countenance as well as the tariff barriers and Brexit
so all in all, its bad
One of the most concise, level headed answers to alot of the problems in the uk. Nobody seems to realise this is very intentional and due to alot of gov policy. Massive wealth inequlity. It will balance out one day though, most fictional dysoptian stories forget that. Wealthy always need to generate money from someone. When the mass majority have got none. Whos earning
I can understand and agree, from Italy
In the video, the author says that the UK has one of the lowest fertility rates in all of Europe with 1.61. Just went on google to check fertility rates:
Italy - 1.3
Spain - 1.4
Poland -1.48
Hungary 1.55
Portugal - 1.36
Those are 2022 values. Now Italy is 1.2 and Spain is 1.1 and both are declining
This video is full of false allegory and non factuality
Could be lowest if u exclude the immigrants.
All of these problems have been exacerbated by grossly over-populating the country
"massive public service obligations"?
We have the most privatised public realm in the Western world and our state pension is also one of the lowest as is our spending on unemployment. Honestly America we've had quite enough of your way of doing things - your country has tent cities and people sleeping in their cars
You've failed to mention that the sanctions culture has added to the UK inflation.
They went overboard with austerity, but you do remember why they did it in the first place, right?

This is the attitude. We need more people like you and fewer like the pessimists and parasites in this thread.
Mainly because the migrants themselves only want to live in a few European countries and skip the rest.
it will pay off in the long run.....
IF the larger society accepts the descendants of these migrants as British

The pension crisis is so bad I'm actually retired and saving for my two kids ( 33 and 38) its what us useless boomers do..

Fix crumbling infrastructure. Curtail the growing chasm in wealth disparity, with its knock-on effects on the housing market and the growing nature of dependency on the assets of the uber wealthy in everyday life.
Completely agree 👍
It can all be explained by the fact that Britain is led by a non-British prime minister. Occupation
As you seem to switch between saying England, Britain and the UK without apparently understanding that they mean different things makes it clear you have limited knowledge or authority to speak on this topic. Example- there was no English Navy after the Act of Union (1707); after this date it is the British Navy.

“You don’t know though.” You sure don’t. The UK can be voted out by the rest. You have no ‘ultimate’ authority. You really never did.
@@JohnnyinMN But the UK can't be voted out. That's the whole point of having a permanent seat.
@@JohnnyinMNOh goodness the U.K. has veto power as a permanent member yuh dunce.
@@JohnnyinMN Why are you talking with such confidence about stuff you clearly do not know anything about?
UK can loose seat if it crumbles to pieces and ceases to exist. Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales...could gain independance.
Whenever they're in a battlefield they just keep swearing and whining.
it will not recover for a long time.. look at places like Portugal
The demographic situation in Scotland is worse than in the rest of the UK, not better
The U.K. needs a workforce programme where normal people who don't have skill are thought skills to work.
So very very true - back in the 79's I was in all the anti-tory demos - it was a complete waste of time and I've still not forgiven those voters
Canada, Australia,Uk,etc. it’s almost like not caring about the average worker has negative compounding effects? Hmmm
Well, If the UK has these Problems, then what should the Germans say, with their Energy Prices and the highest Taxes on Earth - I am literally am a high paid in this country as a software developer and have struggles
what software do you develop
@celltest7645 i got a next day appointment for a filling replacement 2 weeks ago. Don't believe everything the media tells you
@@jamesn0va I'm glad for you but why would anyone pull out their teeth themselves if what you got was available to everyone?
The last bit sounds like bollocks.

That's just how it works.
don’t forget about Lizz Truss 😂
Many adults were denied the vote in the Referendum, 3 million, sufficient to have changed the outcome; and the problems of Brexit were not "unexpected" but entirely predicted, set out in detail, and ignored.
It’s a shame that incompetent idiot Cameron couldn’t outline tho issues during his so-called campaign for the UK to remain in the EU
