  • While the film Avatar paints the brave Humans and Marines of the RDA as the bad guys, we think the truth is far more complicated than most people realize.

Here's the funny thing about Avatar, there's nothing the Navi can do if the RDA just decided to glass the planet from orbit and harvest the minerals afterward.

@Kevin Warburton You need more energy to send a space ship to the next stellar system at 90% of lightspeed than to change the orbit of and asteroid. they just had to dismantle one cargo ship and strip its thruster on an asteroid, actually just a cargo ship throwing random rock from orbit would be enough to cause destruction on scale similar to nuclear weapon.

@n00bMaster69 The mountains float because they're electromagnetic, not because of the atmosphere. Unobtanium is a superconductor which is why the humans want it.

    • @cod6guy12
      @cod6guy12 4 ปีที่แล้ว +179

Anyone who can travel at even a fraction of the speed of light (Like the RDA) is capable of 'glassing' a planet, fly your ship at the target and release a projectile - Then slow down. Atmosphere / Magnetism would not be able to stop the projectile. The atmosphere of Earth couldn't stop the meteor that killed the dinosaurs, a projectile going a fraction of the speed of light would be even more powerful than that. Magnetism wouldn't be a problem either and if it was you could just launch a non-magnetic projectile anyways.
This is actually a big plot hole in any sci-fi work that portrays the use of light-speed travel, a good example being Starwars (Which is why it was weird to see them acknowledge it was possible in The Last Jedi, when Holdo sacrificed herself). Light-speed travel is stupidly easy to weaponize and stupidly hard to defend against. If you are capable of it, you can completely shit on anyone who isn't. This is one of the many reasons why the human race wouldn't stand a chance if a hostile alien species ever attacked us.

Side rant, you think that one day in the future (if we get off this planet) some kind of new ideology will rise? Something like starship troopers (facism with a twist of technocracy, yes like national socialism) or maybe something like the empire (super advanced and alien hating government that has loyal members and a immortal leader to never stray his leadership) because I feel like we might progress to one of those governments, which both are quite enjoyable to live in thinking of their success and prosperity

If you've seen the movie or saw any kinds of mining activities irl you'd know that mining requires clearing the land, sometimes pushing out the native populace, destroying the surrounding environment. And if you think the fictional RDA would wanna pay for those costs, you're just extremely naive.

The biggest problem I had with Avatar wasn’t the Dancing with the wolves in space storyline (although that did make me roll my eyes quite a few times) or the Anti-Humanity theme (it didn’t even feel THAT Anti-Human upon rewatching it, more Human critical then anything) it was the naive idealization of Nature and severe Vilification of Science and Technology, many people have gotten the idea in their heads that Mother Nature is beautiful and fair and that we need to live in Harmony and Balance with her when in reality “Harmony” and “Balance” are Human concepts and Mother Nature is an ugly and mean and hateful bitch who’s only goal is to weed out those she deems “unfit” to survive (and usually they’re the ones who deserve to survive the most), but Technology let’s us spit in her face and say “fuck you bitch! We’re doing what we want from now on.” and this movie pretty much says that we should give that up in favor of going back to living as Hunter-Gatherers who rarely live to 20 and have to have 10+ kids because most of them will die before they reach walking age, fuck that I would rather put up with Climate Change.

      - "(it didn’t even feel THAT Anti-Human upon rewatching it, more Human critical then anything)"
I know right? I'm tired as hell of the "HUmaNiTy bAd!!!" narrative, but Avatar (in the MANY times i've rewatched it) *never* gave me that vibe.
They are made the bad guys, sure, but they're still the most badass depiction of humans i've seen (while still being fairly grounded, which is why i enjoy it), and it doesn't feel like some blatant political message. (they're simply the bad guys of the movie)
Don't even get me started on the second movie though... It took every mistake the first DIDN'T make and doubled down on them... Even forced in an evil white guy (with a good brown assistant) the anti-whites could rub one out to... At least Quaritch was badass and depicted respectfully, and was by no means used as a political or racist statement.
Quaritch is still great though, and his relationship with the wild kid (his son) showed a lot of potential. (and showed some nuance with the kid being scared of an enraged neytiri)
And yeah, the "nature is wonderful" thing has to stop, haha.
I love nature, but nature is chaos. Pure evil, in many cases. These people know nothing about nature.

Also, there are a couple of things the movie fails to recognize.
1- They wouldn't need Jake to do anything if the RDA would opt for shaft mining instead of pit mining, which they obviously had the tech to do.
2- Any civilization that has the capacity for near relativistic speeds will likely have the tech to no longer need fossil fuels, like nuclear fusion or at least miniaturized nuclear fission. The Earth and any tech they employ shouldn't be power by fossil fuels which would be costly to ship to Pandora.
3- Early in the movie it mentions that Pandora is smaller than Earth and has less gravity. Although the Na'avi were taller, they should be weaker than an Earth-born human who grew up in stronger gravity.
4- Because of the difficulty of getting support from the Earth, the colonists of Pandora would need the support and friendship from the local population. So, instead of killing them all, the humans would need to learn to coexist so they could survive and would be far more proactive than is even shown in developing their relationship with the local population.
All in all, this movie is simply James Cameron's attempt to rewrite the history of colonization but exposes his own severe lack of understanding of the subject. He deifies primitavism, forgetting that modernity has made his whole career possible. I'm sorry, but I like AC, modern medicine, and streets not reeking of manure.
Humanity is a young race that yearns for greatness. We're just going through our awkward adolescence. We won't always be stuck in this same place. We will advance beyond this.

What if you die or experience brain death while waiting for your new body to be ready? The Avatar bodies must've been injected with some compound to stop the accelerated growth rate, what longterm effects does that have on other bodily systems?

Plus it was only this single tribe that they wanted to leave, it was pure coincidence that the other mining operations destroyed some random spiritual location. The massive tree wasn’t even one of these spiritual locations, it’s just a random tree the tribe decided to make their home in.

Just because a planet can be colonized quickly does not mean it can be terraformed quickly, and on top of that the energy required to purify an atmosphere with too much of a fatal chemical in it is far more than that required to simply dump some new chemicals into a shortage (as if it were that easy to begin with).

@@@charissawilkinson9270 first off, your two comments contradict each other. If it was just so he could walk, he could have completed his mission and gotten the surgery.
That being said, his reasons for betraying his species have multiple possible motivations. There was the romantic relationship with the tall blue hottie; there was his desire to walk again, which he was able to do as a Na'vi, and then there's the motivation for revenge against the establishment for discarding him after he was paralyzed in the service of the military. Each reason individually would be a powerful motivator... put them together and it's no wonder that he chose to do what he did.
But that's all beside the point. The real reason is "white man bad, native good." Hollywood's overarching motivation for everything is politically correct environmentalism and social justice, which they laid on so thick in this movie you needed one of those SCBA's to breath in the movie theatre. It's kinda funny that native Americans would be offended by this movie... James Cameron bathes himself and movie-goers in his racial guilt over the settling (conquest?) of America.

Nations have been destroyed. Nature has been destroyed. All people live in pods (like the one we see Jake in) and spend their time drinking themselves to death. It is an ugly globalist Jewish globohomo dystopia, the kind that real world elites dream of. Not to mention that the protagonist never actually tried to accomplish his job in establishing negotiations about mining with the Navi - he was too busy falling in love. The avatar program was created to try to avoid conflict, not to create it. While he was having the time of his life on the personal level, the time for using negotiation to avoid conflict was being wasted. Imagine if he had instead helped negotiate peaceful co-existence, before things went bad...
Humans did not need to move en mass to the inhospitable Pandora, they just needed ores, and potentially could have traded other goods and services, which would have saved not only lives on both sides, but would have been cheaper than war and thus please even cold hearted bean counters.

@@paulbeen459 Humans in this fictional story could have wiped them out from day one, but didn't, instead investing in schools, and then in the avatar technology, specifically attempting a peaceful co-existence. Humans needed the mineral (in small quantities which could be shipped via expensive interstellar transport), but did not need the planet or it's life.
Since it's fiction, there is no "true" or "false" answer to your assertion. Your assertion is what in the real world would be called a counter-factual, the path one can only speculate upon since it's not the factual path our history followed; in a fictional universe, this 'alternate history' is even more vague - the author could have written in any other way one can name.
But it's more logically consistent with the fictional universe as presented so far, for humans to co-exist with the Navi.
I think that in essence you are saying that if you had written the story, your humans would have wiped our your Navi, and we cannot deny that.

I was with you with all your points up until Eywa. A couple of things bugged me about that.
    1. You describe the Na'vi as succumbing to an "alien" intelligence, however, this characterization is misleading. Eywa is, in general terms, an amalgamation of all life on Pandora. In point of fact, she contains large portions of the consciousness of all the Na'vi throughout history. Almost their entire evolutionary history is in Eywa. So it's not an "alien" intelligence, as significant portions of its intellect actually *are* Na'vi. Think of Eywa as an ancestral council of all organisms on Pandora.
You rightly point out that the balance Eywa keeps leads to shorter life expectancy, but the continuity oglf consciousness beyond bodily death for the Na'vi can't be understated in this equation. Even Sigourney Weaver's character essentially downloaded her consciousness into Eywa before death. So while there is a shorter life expectancy, death is not the same on Pandora as it is to an earthling.
Further, you described Eywa as "possibly malevolent," however, this is generally speaking shown to be not the case. For reasons previously mentioned, Eywa is so deeply connected with every life on Pandora that malevolence against the Na'vi is essentially malevolence against itself. The equivalent of an autoimmune disorder.
And importantly, if you understand Pandora as a body, and each organism as a cell, you will understand largely Eywa's perspective towards the people. For the body to maintain itself, occasionally certain cells have to die. Ultimately, examining our own bodies on a cellular level would show a similar apparent callousness and brutality, but every part of the human body is, to the body, precious.
What's more, in Eywa is actually the source of the *solution* to the conflict. The Na'vi have no interest in anything humanity can provide, but the Na'vi are not the ones humanity needs to convince. Eywa is. And humanity has the potential to offer Eywa something that it doesn't have access to itself. *Progeny.*
All life desires to propagate itself. Eywa has maintained equilibrium because it suffuses all the area available to it. But humanity has access to interstellar travel. Allowing the possibility of creating a *new* Eywa, like a child, on another moon. By transplanting over time a number of "seed" populations of Pandoran flora and fauna onto another world, where it could grow and develop into an independent consciousness. Incorporation of technology, as humans use, would open up the options to an interstellar collective, potentially even incorporating humans and earth biota into the fold. Technology would even be capable of being wired in to augmenting Eywa itself, expanding its capacities. Because its electronics would ultimately be extensions of its current body and mind, it would likely see no inherent difference between technical creations and biological ones. Thus allowing it to see the benefits of technical expansion, and then *Eywa itself* would bring technology to the Na'vi, because they are the organisms most suited to.
If humanity had paid enough attention to recognize what Eywa was, ultimately the conflict could be greatly ameliorated. But anthropomorphic bias caused them to negotiate with Pandora's hands rather than its brain.
So I think there's potential there for a highly interesting story, but it is a story that is unlikely ever to be put to film. Because the film creators *also* have an anthropomorphic bias, and do not seem likely to explore the broader implications of the world that they created.

    • @paulzuk1468

See, this kind of long-term thinking would be indicative of a species that truly has matured enough to become an interstellar civilization. Forging a common future with planetary-scale hive minds would benefit humanity immensely in the long term, but all the humans in the movie - and many in these comments - are myopically hyperfocused on the short-term benefits of mining an industrial resource.
And in the shallowest way imaginable, too - remember when Selfridge tries to motivate Grace to do what he wants? Does he argue that unobtainium has immense benefits to human technology and civilization? Does he mention how many great things it enables in medicine, science, manufacturing?
Hell no, he just tells her it's wortha lot of money, and threatens her funding. The movie's RDA has zero long-term vision that extends beyond, literally, the next financial quarter.

Hanlon's Razor states that you should never attribute to malice what can be attributed to stupidity, and in the Avatar universe (not A:TLA) humans weren't evil, just incompetent. Antagonists need not be evil; a touch of incompetence is, when you come to think of it, more than enough to get them into a position where everyone's got their guns aimed at them.
If the Avatar universe was fleshed out such that the Navi were not painted as pure good and humans as pure evil, with incompetence crippling both sides to great extent (Navi resistance to change, humanity's unchecked greed), that would be great.

Agent orange, and the degradation of ecosystems in general, could have set us back centuries in medical science. Who knows what benefits to humanity could be found in the DNA of aliens. "Humanity first" is best achieved by preserving life wherever found, "purging xenos" hurts us much more than it helps, especially if they don't have the capacity to wage war on our home planet.

The very biology of Na'vi is non-logical and questionable. Their planet's gravity is lower, so their muscle and bone structure must be less dense than humans. So it means humans should be stronger and more durable physically per 1 kg of body mass. This applies to all of Pandora's fauna. Also, since gravitation is low, humans must be able to run and jump far better than on Earth. Not to mention that they would be able to fight Na'vi hand to hand more successfully than you might think.

[Their planet's gravity is lower, so their muscle and bone structure must be less dense than humans.]
This is actually a sci-fi storytelling trope, not a natural law. Biological systems will evolve to optimize for survival vs. resource and energy use. Humans lose muscle and bone mass in low gravity because we evolved to conserve resources in the environment on Earth ; But for an organism which has to contend with lower gravity and lots of energy in the system (thanks to Alpha Centauri's two suns plus Polyphemus' radiation rings) muscles are a lot easier to maintain - you can get a lot stronger before you can't find enough nutrients and calories anymore. Radiation would also provide another selection pressure that favored body mass, dense muscles and/or heavy armor.
Hence - extremely strong and dangerous predators, extremely heavily armored herbivores, and very strong humanoid tool users with reinforced skeletons. It's perfectly logical.
