  • The harvest moon festival or Tsukimi is a annual cultural event around Japan. In this video we were invited to join the Shishimai festival by the village of Hanashiro in the south of Okinawa.
The Shishimai is slowly becoming less common on the island and often only seen in larger events or for tourists, so festivals that are truly local are quite a unique experience.
The harvest moon festival is held during the full moon in September each year. The whole town gathers to follow the visa dancers and the Shishimai (dragon dog) through the towns streets and visiting sacred prayer sites along the way.
It is believed that if a child's head is bitten by the Shishimai then that child will be blessed, so many young children are presented to the Shishimai in hopes of having good fortune bestowed upon them as the parade moves through the town.
