Some eateries aren’t just about the food but the happy memories that the space transports one back to. One such repository of memories for many is Hotel Diana, Udupi, a must-visit on any food lover’s itinerary for its iconic gadbad, vegetable cutlet that’s been on the menu for over 60 years, and as we discovered on this evening outing, the dahi vada, horlicks cake and banana podi too. I was happy to introduce the ‘Boss’ to this South Canara tradition, and also grateful for the opportunity to take my Mum back to some of her cherished memories.

GUDBUD / GADIBIDI AS ORIGINALLY NAMED WAS INVENTED BY KAMATH SIR OF "KAMATHS GADIBIDI "ICE CREAM PARLOUR SITUATED OPPOSITE "HOTEL TRIVENI" BESIDE PRESENT DAY "HOTEL DURGA BHAVAN" (WHICH WAS HOTEL SHEETAL IN THE PAST) WHICH IS NOW LOST TO HISTORY NOW AS IT WAS TAKEN BY "POLAR BEAR" THEN LATER "CTF" OF HANGYO WHICH IS RUNNING TODAY IN THAT PLACE.

Unfortunately, DIana has lost its charm for me after they vacated the old tiled roof building at Diana Circle. They did not have the first floo tlll some time time in late 80's but had a beautiful garden area which is part of my childhood memories. Oh, how I and my cousins used to crave for the Gadibidi ice cram and the cutlets. Yes, it was called Gadibidi ice cream, likely because it was created in a bit of a haste when some guests asked for something special for desert.. They named it Gadbad latter, probably due to the influx of students from north India coming to study in Manipal who did not know the meaning of the local word Gadibidi (haste) and asked for Gadbad. If I recall, Diana was only sort of uniquet restaurant for cutlets and ice cream in Udupi back then, and was popular not just with Udupiites but also students from Manipal who gave a festive ambiance the place on weekends and after watching the rare Hindi or English movies that played at Alankar of Kalpana cinema. So nostalgic!
Being a localite I feel that the quality of diana has been on a downward spiral ever since they shifted from Diana circle to Jodukatte.
I have had multiplr experiences wherein I was served micro waved food.
woodlands though continues to maintain its standard despite being as old as Diana
My aunt used to take us to Diana after a long summer holiday. It was our cue that an summer holiday had come to an end. The place was old with its old world charm . As we entered inside the smell from the kitchen the round metal staircase the cutlet the ice cream gudbud all are seared in memory. When I revisit new Diana the charm isn't there of the old place. 1988 1992 was the years I spent at Manipal doing my engineering. This year with a batch mate of mine, we visiting Manipal for the first time. Hired a rent a car from Mangalore and then roamed around. We too went to Diana - as a matter of fact the waiter who served you, served us. Pure nostalgic. The taste of the masala dosa is still the same. Gadbad / Parfait etc - oh my God - no words to express

Kripal , for gadbad you use the spoon which is earlier we called as Amitabh bacchan spoon , and it's long and it has to reach the bottom of Gadbad glass. Specially it was used in Ideal Ice cream in Mangalore
In late 70s when I was a kid, I used to visit my granny's home for summer vacation. My sweet memory goes back to those olden days.. climbing the spiral staircase of Diana..finding a table for the family and inserting the long spoon deep inside the gudbud glass and relishing the different layers of gudbud icecream by moving the tongue all over the spoon 😀
Thank you Kripal for reminding me my old technique of inserting the spoon deep and enjoying the 'king of icecream '- the Gudbud!! 🙏

Yes mine too. The earliest memories i hv was during early 80s... They used to play Love story songs which was hit back then... It was also only hotel which was serving mouth freshener that time....too😂😂😂

No, that’s gone with the old location. This is a modern building, no staircase, but a lift instead.
Anytime any season we love Diana . Our mr devendra mamu greets all of us with same million volt smile . Cutlet , poori kurma , gadbad is the most favorite items since years . Thanks sir for visiting our udupi . Good to see Aunty along with you . 🥰🥰

Remember visiting Diana for the first time in 1972and eating their gudbud for the first time.They used to serve very tasty Puri Kurma, I still remember the taste...
I had missed the original episode on Diana hotels on FLTV. Looked it up and watched the episode, mesmerized. Hats off to such entrepreneurs like Sr. Mr. Pai, who work relentlessly to establish their brands. How many would even know, that something that we happily chomp & finish today within minutes, could have actually taken years to find customers, at one point. These impactful back stories make these episodes, even more special.

Feeling nostalgic ❤️❤️❤️I have so many memories associated to hotel Diana. their gadbad, vegetable cutlet and dahi wada is my all time favourite. Tomato ketchup which they serve with vegetable cutlet is not readymade they actually prepare and even the ice-creams are made in Diana. As a kid I used to wait for my summer vacations because I would go to Udupi and visit to Diana was a must.❤️❤️❤️ beautiful vlog. Thankyou so much.🙏

Ripe banana Bhajjis are common in Kerala and it’s called Pazham Pori also in the Malay countries ie Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore it’s very popular and known as Pisang Goreng.

Good afternoon dear Kripal 👍 Lovely to see the gorgeous couple together with your Mom 👍👌 Every dish that you ordered be it the Veg Cutlet , Dahi Vada , Bhel , GB IC and Horlicks cake was simply mouth watering 😋😋 Just a couple of days ago on a rainy day in Mumbai we had prepared an assorted Bhajiya . Typically we have Bread Bhajji , Ripe Banana Bhajji , Onion Bhajji , Potato Bhajji and capsicum Bhajji ( in fact we love the Ripe Banana Bhajji and it’s my favourite) . Today I am craving for the Udipi style cutlet . There is a Udipi restaurant closer to my bastion and I am 💯 % going to have it later this evening 😀😀 Sree Mam has come with a clear purpose to savour and relish the GB IC . I have never ever tried the Horlicks cake IC . Not sure if I can find one in Mumbai . That’s a wonderful beverage to finish the meal ( good digestive beverage) . Last Monday visited Mitra samja during my official trip to Udupi and the goli baji I ate there were never eaten before i never taested such goli baji anywhere in South wow so taesty

This glass of the Gadbad looks relatively lighter to the Cream Bowl one. I mean, if one can finish an entire serving, minus any help and that too after having picked on some snacks earlier, it must be! BTW it was a lovely episode.

Diana is not the Diana that i remember everything has changed most of the items are of the menu or available on select days , customer service has come down as well, it's loosing it's iconic stature that was build on years of hard work & exemplary service towards its customers.
