It blows my mind that this language is distantly related to Cebuano, my language and other languages of the Philippines. Also, Malay and one of the official languages of Madagascar: Magalasy. The Austronesian language family is very widespread.

its getting lost because the damn Spanish language was spread there and the people just started speaking spanish over the centuries... just like how the Hawaiian language is dying and being replaced with pidgin English.

Seems completely live and kicking on the island to me. The locals almost all speak it as their first language.
