    I love how you set up the caves for the ancistrus and a large apple snail moves in immediately. (I'm sure it was just a housewarming gift of vacuuming the new cave home. lol)

      I just started breeding them in July, I have commons and albinos. Though, I think the adult male I have is actually a blue eyed lemon, he is an albino with dark eyes. He was sold to me as an albino, so I'm not totally certain. His babies don't seem to carry the dark eyes so far that I've seen.
      Anyhow, they are a lot of fun to breed and seem to just keep breeding as often as they have a chance to!

      when you have enough equipment and you provide good water and good food, ... well in that case it is easy to breed fish, even very easy. You don't have to change water chemistry like KH GH pH with a lot of fish. Just clean water. I breed a lot of fish from south america in hard water...Take your time, and i mean that in 2 ways : put enough time in it, and be patient, and you will be succesfull.

    Hello. I stumbled upon your video. Great information. Just the other day I found some some bristle nose eggs in the cave. I have a 10 gallon tank so I got a sponge filter and a heater. I used the substrate from my 125 gallon (where the eggs were living) the water. Set it up and the added the cave with the pleco who was in the tubes. My water looks cloudy this morning. Should I put a regular filter? I have a aqua clear 30 filter. Also what should I feed the babies once they hatch. I moved them because of the aftican cichlids in my 125 tank. Didn't want them to get eaten.
    Please any suggestions. Thanks in advance for any information.

    Great video as always Rachel. I'm also trying to breed 183s. I have two mature pair and one sub adult in a 29gal and actually just discovered my first culch of eggs. They were sitting right outside of his face so I removed the eggs and placed them in a hang on breeder box with some Almond leaves and Java moss in the breeder box with the eggs. Is there anything else that I can do to help increase the chances that the eggs will successfully hatch out?

    I want to set up a long fin bristlenose breeding tank but locally cannot find any ceramic caves. Would they breed in PVC pipes? Would I need to block off one end of the pipe? I have a pair of peppermint bristle nose plecos housed with ember tetras, one spotted blue eye, cherry shrimp & pest (pond) snails which have been spawning & I've had several batches of fry. Unfortunately the fry never seem to survive. Can you suggest any reasons why this might be?

    I have the albinos. One large male and 4 other juvenile possibly one other male. Will they utilize PVC as caves? It's what I have on hand, just wanted to know if it be worth my wild to use it for them or just buy the more textured caves?

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes pvc is ok, it just has to have a closed end for the male to trap the female

  • @camerazeye7923
    @camerazeye7923 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Rachel. I just had my first batch hatch. What about PVC for caves?

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      pvc is fine, but for breeding plecos it should have a cap, as the male traps the female in the cave to deposit her eggs. If she can swim through, it may delay the breeding process

    • @camerazeye7923
      @camerazeye7923 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They were designed by me and custom fabricated by my husband, who is a gifted welder. They are in 4' modular sections, with stepped design holding 75g on the bottom, 55g in the middle and 20 longs on top. they have leveling feet as well.

    I don’t get sponge filters. I get that they stop fry/small stuff from getting killed but doesn’t that also stop stuff that needs to be filtered, filtered?

    • @MonopolyBag
      @MonopolyBag 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They slowly suck water through the sponge. It will pull out small debris, but primarily the sponges work best for the biological filtration and fine polishing of the water. They will not filter out large debris. You can remove large debris via siphoning. Sponge filters work great but they do not produce a lot of water flow.

    Hi Rachel, how many males can yo keep in one tank I at the moment only have a pair of bristlenose but I find that they are so shy I never see them unless I go looking for them, is this normal, I've only had them for about 3 weeks . Any help would be much appreciated thank you 😊

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally normal. As long as you have at least as many caves/hides for each pleco, you can add more. With a pair, they WILL likely start breeding. Plecos are inherently less visible then midwater swimmers.

    Maybe you'd know....
    Recently... my BN plecos have started dying. They're in a 125g tank. Used to have 9 and I'm now down to just 2.
    They got super bloated and then either died from stress? or some of their anus's actually burst which killed them obviously. I thought maybe it was the higher protein food I was giving the tank (not realizing that algae wafers are high protein), so thought that maybe they were getting super constipated, but then one after the other after the other died even after changing their food and giving them more veggies.
    The 2 remaining ones act totally normal, but so did most of the others until they suddenly got sick and died.
    I can't think of any other fish in the tank developing similar symptoms and dying like that so... /shrugs. I dunno. I haven't noticed signs of parasites like clear poop or anything and when they were first starting to get sick, I did do a parasite food treatment which obviously did nothing since more died anyway.
    Ever experience something like that? If so, clues on what caused it and what you did to prevent it?
