Hello everyone. For those who are interested i would like to tell you the story of soundiata keita, the way it was tolf me by the elders in Guinea when i was a child. I think it can be interesting for those in the Diaspora and if you can share it with your kids, it is a good thing. What i am going to tell you in the legend with the magics behind
Long time ago, the prince of mandé was told that he had to marry a very ugly woman. This woman would give him a child that would be a great ruler. Therefore the prince agreed to marry the princess sogolon the ugly. Songolo gave birth to a a child named soundiata. To the king horror, the child was disabled. I could not walk. The king was very upset and him and his family and other wives would mistreat the poor woman and her child.
One day, soundiata was so angry at the kids that would be mean to his mother that he managed to stand for the first time and cut a huge tree to defend his mothers honor.
Eventually soundiata and his mom left the mandé and soundiata joind the Donzo hunting society. He became a great warrior and worked for another king. Unfortunately his mother died and he had an argument with his king.
By that time, the mandé had become a vassal of the sosso king dome. The weak half brother of soundiata was a puppet in the hands of the feared sorcerer king soumaworo Kanté. Soundiata decided to take back his kingdom and with he created and army. He was joined by the donzo hunting society.
They fought soumaworo but failed every time until a woman gave them the secret to destroy the sorcerer. It was believed that no weapon could hurt or kill the king because of his magics. Only an arrow made with a cock lug could kill him
During the last battle of kirina, soundiata manage to face soumaworo and to hit him with the arrow. To this day, it is said that soumaworo vanished. Some say he became an eagle, other say he became smoke.
After that, soundiata became the king of the prophecy. He initiated the mali kingdom that will become one of the greatest empire of human history and the land of the richest man in the history of mankind "kankan moussa".
It is said that following his win, soundiata created the first law framing "human rights".
Home team story gave the historical view and i wanted to share the legendary side with magic and the epic that is sang by the griot in mandinka culture to this day.
Another side of the story show that soumaworo was to the evil that his depicted in the traditional version of the story. But this is another story.

Honestly I love African folklore from different countries 💕🌌.... I'm going to watch the Soundiata Keita film that was directed by Abel Kouame. He's from the Ivory Coast and makes animated films from an African perspective. I hope in the future someone does more animated and live action films and tv shoes about these historical figures and just about folklore too.

    • @Bonitaymorena
      @Bonitaymorena 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Thanks for posting the full story! I'm so annoyed that Disney twisted the story and tried to mix it with Shakespeare to create their lion king film. But I'm not surprised they would do that.... instead of just making an animated film about actual African folklore.

I love that West African military history is finally getting charted on maps the way Kings and generals do so for European & Middle eastern history.
It really adds visual depths to our military tactics.
I also enjoy that the symbol for Calvary used wasn’t the western sign, but rather based off the artwork from artefacts of the Mali Empire that represented horsemen.

I’m kind of envious of the black diaspora tbh. They are actively trying to reclaim their history, and in the process now famous historians acknowledge at least tiny bits of true African history. I’m on the other hand from the Indian diaspora, indians have absolutely no national consciousness, our history is distorted and we still believe that everything we have was a gift from whites, something Africans debunked immediately after independence

Sundiata is one of my favorite historical figures; first discovered him in high school, where world history focused on the gold-salt trade as an example of how global trade works. In college I took an African Empires class, and since the professor specialized in the Sahel empires, we spent time on Mali as well.
“ In a trice, Sundiata was in the middle of the Sossos like a lion in the
Sheepfold. The Sossos, trampled, under the hooves of his firey charger,
cried out. When he turned to the right, the smiths of Soumaoro fell in
their tens and when he turned to the left, his sword made heads fall as
when someone shakes a tree of ripe fruit. The horsemen of Mema wrought a
frightful slaughter and their long lances pierced flesh like a knife
sunk into a pawpaw”-The Epic of Sundiata Keita, complied by D.T. Niane.

Just thought I would add for my fellow medieval warfare history buffs who might be wondering how archers checked a cavalry charge... most African archers at the time used poison tipped arrows and Sundiata's were no different. More importantly, everyone knew that the arrows were poisoned. Now imagine riding in, expecting to hit the rear or flank of a formation and then suddenly being faced with dense volley after dense volley of missiles which you knew very well would kill you in minutes if they even grazed your forearm. I imagine you would rear up and check your charge pretty quickly and retreat. Now when you consider the fact that these volleys did indeed land on most of the oncoming cavalry, it's no surprise that they broke and fled

Bro I absolutely love the animations, this reminds me of the kings and generals channel.
I know that this is asking a lot of you but it would be really awesome if you could redo your videos (the one's without animations) and give them animations and clear-cut closed captioning so that I (and other hard-of-hearing/deaf people) can properly understand what you are trying to iterate and illustrate in your videos.

THE FIRST BLACK MANDINGO KING BEFORE THE BATTLE OF KIRINA BETWEEN KEITA AND KANTÉ WAS SAMMOU FOFANA EMPEROR OF GHANA.
To believe our Fofana informants from the circles of Nara, Nioro, Keita and Diéma, the ancestors of the Fofana soninke would be from the town of Oumy created in 104, south of Timbuktu, which they left around the year 211 to settle in the Nema-Oualata-Bassikounou area at Hodh Echargui.
My books ("Before the Empire of Ghana" and "The stakeholders of Kouroukanfouga") tell more about this part of the history of the Fofana.
In my book "Kings and Peoples of the Empire of Ghana", it is said that when the Berbers, founders of the empire of Ghana lost power in 712, a Fofana was designated by the blacks as the first black king of Wagadou. This is why Fofana means "those who were the first blacks to lead". His name was Sammou Fofana. 13 Fofana rulers ruled the Wagadou.
In the time of the Ghana Empire, the Fofana clans were called Fofana Kanindio; those who stayed in the Soninke country became Fofana Boïguillé. The Fofana Guirassy are those who left for Guinea and Senegal. Check out my book "Kings and Peoples of the Empire of Ghana".
After the end of the reign of the black emperors called "Ka", the Wague hunt in 892 the Fofana who ruled the region of Timbuktu; the latter left to settle in Mandé, Bélédougou and also in the country stretching from the Niger river to Bani, where they created the commercial town of Kayaro (Ghiyarou).
At the fall of Wagadou, the Fofana will prevail in Diafounou then in Diallan. It is these animist Fofana who are at the origin of the creation of the kingdom of Mara. See my book "After the Empire of Ghana".
The Fofana later lost the battles against Kaarta and Sosso, the Fofana princes emigrate to Nouga and Kaniogo (mandé), they were called Maraka there; this term has become the name given to all people speaking the Soninke language like the Fofana. Those who went to Guinea to Sansaran and Fouta became the Guirassy, a branch of the Diakhanké. Those who remained in the Sahel became the Kagoro (see our publication on the Kakolo).
The Fofana took part in the battle of Kankegnan which opposed the Mandingo coalition against the Kanté of Sosso by giving 812 warriors. consult my book "The stakeholders of Kouroukanfouga". ( The constitution of Africa)
Kakolo or Kagorotan was the name of an independent region created in 1448, in the south of Kita in Sirakoro, after the explosion of the Mandé. It was founded by three surnames (Kamara, Fofana and Mounra). The Fofana and Kamara were Mandinka; the Mounra spoke the Soninke language. The country was ruled independently for 13 years through their kings: 2 Traore and a Fofana. The struggle between Fofana and Traore led to the destruction of the country. After the breakup of the country of Kakolo, only the Fofana remained; Traore left to the southwest and Camara to the west.

Here''s an interesting thought. The legendary West African musician Salif Keita can prove that he is of the royal dynasty that goes back to Sunjata. He has referred to the equally legendary musician Mory Kante as his griot implying a subordinate caste status. The ruler of the Sosso who was overthrown at Kirina was Soumaoro Kanté. It suggests to me that Mory Kante may possibly have an illustrious pedigree himself. If so it's unfortunate that his ancestors were on the losing side.
