Although Sting got most of the press and went on to become one of the largest stars in music, I believe Stewart Copeland was the driving force in this band. Those unmistakable beats drove the music of this awesome band. No other drummer could compare during the 80s.
Stewart Copeland is definitely the man. Incredible creativity and amazing ability no matter what the song. Definitely one of the most underrated drummers of all time.
I just got back from their concert in Grand Rapids, Michigan tonight...they played this & they STILL ROCK!!! It was completely amazing; best live show I've ever been to!
i must say when you hear this song on a quality stereo this is one of the finest songs ever recorded. I remember having jbl speakers and sony receiver etc.
Caught them in Germany on this tour. There were so different live. A lot of Energy. And very cool to see all these kids from overseas enjoying the heck out of a great band.
I LOVED this band.. Like was said earlier, I have lost count of the amount of Police tapes I ran out before CDs came along! Keith Moon, Stewart Copeland and John Bonham, three of the best drummers in rock as far as I'm concerned. What an inspiration!
Awesome song. I've always liked this one. I really love how they let it rip at about 2:35 and really show what they're made of!! It sometimes makes me wish I had been old enough to go to a Police concert. I vaguely remember seeing a few of their music videos on tv when I was little. But by the time I knew about them, they had already broken up.
This is by far the best live version of Driven To Tears. On this particular evening they are ON FIRE!!!. 1980; before they sold out to the paradigm of MONEY!!!!!. They were a fastidious bunch. Too bad for all us true FANS. These three where unique!!!.
Brillant, 100% brillant. I remember back in early 07' when they were on television, I turned up the volume and I swear, I dropped a couple of tears. LONG LIVE THE POLICE!!!!!!!!
YESSS. i thought that i was the only one to think so. except for Spirits, nothing beat the albums before. But dont know what you dont know. Sting never lied to himself about his abilities. He is an achievier and should be admired. AND, he acquiesced to Stewart because Stewart was rich, his brother was hooked up big time in the British punk scene and Sting was poor, newly moved to London with a new wife and baby. Thanks to Stewart punking out all Stings MOR songs, Police got their sound.
Totally underated, and i'm saying this about what is effectively a very well selling pop group, their collective talent is simply amazing every member can be an inspiration or idol of any learning musician
I really needed to hear this song (really rough day as a tour guide at the "Fountain of Youth" - no Joke!). Random search brought you up - THANKS!!!! This is by far one of the best recordings I've heard! I've played it like 15 times already. Rock on! I feel MUCH better! Again, Thanks for the cool tune!
Man i'm thankful to have the police and bands like them to look back on for influences, i would be lost musically without, look at the music now a days what that the fuck do we have lol??
@typsypyg Thanks, I'll watch again and watch their feet. :-) Saw Joan Jett in a club in Seattle in 1994. Her manager/producer, Kenny Laguna, sat off to the side of the stage playing sustained notes and chords on a keyboard. He would even applaud after each song, as if he were a member of the audience.
Watch Copeland just shred it !! this is such a powerhouse performance; although both ANDY summers and Sting are both well acclaimed on their respective instruments [and Sting for his vocals and songwriting] Copeland is probably the most acclaimed for his playing being routinely considered one of the greatest drummers in rock music and more recently[ not that recent really] as a film scorer thanks for the post Cheers!
This track/clip is actually from the 80's punk flick, "Urgh! A Music War" It not only featured them but also The Go-Gos, Devo and Joan Jett among others. Great soundtrack! :)
Sting was, and still is, as Copeland admirably put it a c..., but his musical skills, and actually astonishing and original voice were key to the Police's success, of course. To sing at that high pitch, for 10 minutes, let alone for almost an entire world tour is pretty admirable. He's still a c... though!!!!
This is from Stu & Miles Copelands film "Urgh-A Music War" (1982 I believe...although most footage is from '80 and '81, with a few exceptions (Wall of Voodoo for instance)....to correct your 'this is from sometime in the '80s' statement....this performance is date stamped at the beginning on this clip...as well as location..."Frejus (France) August 1980"....this is a VERY early performance of 'Driven to Tears' off of Zenyatta Mondatta!
U just never see three jazz lovers playing a mixture of fusion and punk. At 2:34 Copeland pumped the tempo up to double that of most punk bands did at the time. Stu is a legend.
The Police: What a band should truly be like. Maybe they had fights here and there, but on stage they were the best. Stewart's drum beats wouldn't have as much power without being behind Sting's high, raspy voice and bouncing bass lines, which wouldn't be anything without Andy's catchy, piercing guitar licks and chords, which wouldn't be anything without Stewart's syncopated beats and other-worldly hi-hat rhythms. It's that simple
Totally cool. I think it's his EH Electric Mistriss (Flanger), along with his other toys like a compressor, etc. Not exactly sure what distortion he uses.
That's of course the strongest masterpiece of their work. Summers did a huge music work in the end of the eighties, "The Golden Wire", a strangely unkwnown album, watch around to find this precious thing. Copeland sounds tracks were not that bad too, and Sting... we all know...
Although Sting got most of the press and went on to become one of the largest stars in music, I believe Stewart Copeland was the driving force in this band. Those unmistakable beats drove the music of this awesome band. No other drummer could compare during the 80s.
crazy to think 3 people doing what they love can influence and bring together so many!
Stewert is f'n amazing!! What a frenzy he wipes up on this song, the driving kick and the chorus breaks. Love the guy!!
I once called this the perfect three minute song. I still stand by that. Genius.
The greatest musical poet, the fastest and most complex drummer, and the most melodic, sureal giutarist ever...........arguably THE best band ever!!!!
Mesmerising live performance! Trio on fire * Copeland is GOD here!
Long hail Stewart Copeland
Stewart Stewart Stewart always rules The Police 🤗🤩🤩🤩
This was in Frejus, 1980.08.28.
I was there. After rain and storm, so much energy in this gig!
i must say when you hear this song on a quality stereo this is one of the finest songs ever recorded. I remember having jbl speakers and sony receiver etc.
the greatest powerful live band i´ve ever seen
on video. they about to come back...
yeah!
Stewart copeland was one of those drummers who really never got the credit he definitely deserved seriously
Excellent clip. One of greatest rock trios of all time.
Stewart Copeland, what a drive, groove and timing, no one can play like that...
R G France
This is beyond awesome.
Caught them in Germany on this tour. There were so different live. A lot of Energy. And very cool to see all these kids from overseas enjoying the heck out of a great band.
This song and performance blows away anything new on the radio or touring today.
Superiority. My favorite Police song and a great live performance. Stewart is a God.
Great live version! The Police at their best, as always!
I LOVED this band.. Like was said earlier, I have lost count of the amount of Police tapes I ran out before CDs came along!

They are the preeminent LIVE TRIO;EVER!!!!!!!!!!
Agreed. And Andy's guitar solo kicks butt here vs. the studio one, which is cranking but way too short.
Amazing... Three talented individuals that make such a magical sound... pure joy...
I have to agree (and theoretically, I'm a 60s guy....This will always be one of the most powerful experiences ever. Unsurpassed.
i love how andy's guitar sounds here, especially during the chorus. best version of driven to tears EVER. i can't stop watching it.
Smoking is an Understatement - Sting - The Police - Brought Life to Percusion Ensembles - WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brillant, 100% brillant. I remember back in early 07' when they were on television, I turned up the volume and I swear, I dropped a couple of tears. LONG LIVE THE POLICE!!!!!!!!
Unique drummer

Watching this reminds me of why they are my NUMBER 1 all-time favorite rock band!
Love it...i saw them in 80 & 81 & 82....good times.
Copeland just drives that beat right through that snare! He seems to be literally attacking the set. Just love it!
Totally underated, and i'm saying this about what is effectively a very well selling pop group, their collective talent is simply amazing every member can be an inspiration or idol of any learning musician
Rock in it's rawest...definitely a big highlight of the 80's!
They were amazing Sting is timeless!
I love all of The Police's music I can't get enough of their music
@winterbourne7 I don't know what the hell he does with those drums...but he's just bloody amazing!!!
the police will never be equalled
SAW THEM LIVE! POLICE FOREVER ROCK !
Man I'm thankful for the police and bands like them, for the influences they gave me musically.. What the fuck do we have now a days for music??
Andy Summers,Stewart Copeland and Sting ,What a Trio!
Fantastic version!
These are the only Police I love!!! :-D Thanks for posting...
GREAT song, and they nailed it live!!
Man i'm thankful to have the police and bands like them to look back on for influences, i would be lost musically without, look at the music now a days what that the fuck do we have lol??

Stewart Copeland is amazing !!!! Great Drummer !!!!! And the others guys are not bad...........
19 years old i was there in frejus seems yesterday
One of my favorite drum performances of all time. Besides Rush, has there ever been a better trio? I don't think so.
Stewart Copeland is the man!!!!!!!!!
Andy's solo is pretty great, kind of Jazz-y at the end!
Same. That's what he was going for. He said that we was trying to do a Coltraine like solo. I love it!!
monster version!!!i love the police
They break at 1:30 ..........one of my favorite all time manic inducing parts of any song ever.
Brilliant.
they where just on tour last year. Rumours says they might come out with a new album.
LA MEJOR VERSION DEL TEMA!
I'm not the first one to say this, but they could have left the camera on Copeland.
Go Andy!!!
Stewart Cppeland is fucking boss
This is from Stu & Miles Copelands film "Urgh-A Music War" (1982 I believe...although most footage is from '80 and '81, with a few exceptions (Wall of Voodoo for instance)....to correct your 'this is from sometime in the '80s' statement....this performance is date stamped at the beginning on this clip...as well as location..."Frejus (France) August 1980"....this is a VERY early performance of 'Driven to Tears' off of Zenyatta Mondatta!

lol glass i couldn't adequately add a single thought to your diatribe! accurate to the nth degree
espetacular!
I wasn't even thought about! lol
Old time monsters of rock....
f n awsome
Totally cool. I think it's his EH Electric Mistriss (Flanger), along with his other toys like a compressor, etc. Not exactly sure what distortion he uses.
Sting's shirt is the same one he wears in the "Don't Stand" video!
Stuart Coplan, what an animal.
HUGE !!
That's of course the strongest masterpiece of their work.
Summers did a huge music work in the end of the eighties, "The Golden Wire", a strangely unkwnown album, watch around to find this precious thing. Copeland sounds tracks were not that bad too, and Sting... we all know...
stewarts on form, not too fast either and well recorded, they're fkn brilliant
This is part of the documentary film "Police around the world"
