Today we check out my top 3 easy shred licks and how to start shredding in general! With these beginner licks we work on alternate picking, hand synchronization and timing. They serve as a great starting point as we gradually increase the challenge step by step :)
Excellence! Need more basics for playing metal.. Shred! Chugging- is done on up to hiw many strings at once? 3? Pick angle w chugging is it preference? Or a standard application?
Shredding is one of the greatest challenge of my life as of now 🤣. The art of matching the speed of the pick arm with the speed of the left hand is quite challenging and its fun and fulfilling.
I love your videos. I wish I had a teacher like you when I was a teenager just starting out. You explain everything so clearly, and without ever making your viewers feel they're being talked down to or left behind. Thank you for creating so much useful content. It's truly appreciated.
Your comment at 3:30 is exactly what I needed to hear. And see. By pointing out that each pulse starts with a different stroke one-down one-up made perfect sense for me and when I looked at it like that and applied it to the fretboard I started to pick up speed exponentially. Thank you so much for these videos in the Insight that you give us.
Same thing for me! Who knew also to count in 6's across 2 beats for triplets in 4/4 time... somehow it all makes more sense, so glad I found this guy because I'm definitely subscribing
Your Highness, KING BERNTH, as you are the KING of Shredding and beyond comparison in the category of "Teaching" others to SHRED!!! You leave me beyond words, as there is no proper description for someone as tremendously phenomenal as you. Thank you, a million times, on "Thank You". You are the greatest, I can say that with newly learned shredding ability - Thanks so much, from all your fans (and I am certainly one of them). God Bless You!!!!
I've been waiting for somebody to do lessons like this where you show what cord you're hitting, because a lot of the times it's hard to see where people's fingers are going, cuz everybody has their own style I've been playing for 20 years and only in the past five have I been training my pinky . the first arrangement you're doing with the A,B,C with index, ring ,pinky finger. It really helps. Just something simple like using your pinky to do bar chords is a game changer if you are a beginner , my pinky is kind of crooked from an old accident so it just felt better to use my index and ring finger but I wish I could go back in time because it would have made me on a whole nother level right now if I can control my pinky the way I do the rest of my fingers anyway I love this man 🙏 keep up the good work
Just started and its amazing how quick first excercise develop just gotta practice transitions and not rush. Try make as clean abd accurate as poss ! So it begins
thank you for making the notes appear as you go, This is very helpful instead of the fret number, in this way we learn to familiarize the fret board and corresponding note as we go. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this knowledge! I'm trying to learn how to play guitar. I'm not very good right now but I beginning to get a little bit better. It's not easy.
It's been a couple of days and I can't put my guitar down . I improved more than I did in the last.couple of months....I was all over the place biting off way more than I can chew...Thanks I'm not going to mess with anything but these for a few weeks.
Start with a 3 note per string major scale . Work it out in octaves across the fretboard.. then up and down each string. Then two string groups.. that is the key to learning lead playing.
I am stuck at 5 nps and it seems like a brick wall. I can pick way faster than that, and my fret hand can go a lot faster, but if I try both at the same time it is like they just cant sink up. It's like the difference in walking fast and running slow. It seems like two totally different mechanisms. I have plenty of time now tho to work on it. I am going to try to shred in less than a month using nothing but your tutorials and a metronome. I been playing 20 years but this feels like starting from scratch.. I will update you on progress, thanks for the videos!!
I'm with you there man. I've also been playing for 20 years, but I am really trying to get focused on finally learning to shred. I just feel so clumsy when I do a lot of these exercises, so I guess that means I really need to slow things down. I think I am also going to really get serious and start practicing exercises like this every day and see what happens. Obviously what we've been doing for 20 years isn't getting it done :)
Speaking as someone who just discovered shredding in his journey slow and patient wins play it slow look away from your cheat sheet learn it to heart slow then once it's in your heart pick up speed then once you got speed mess around with those notes and enjoy making random licks and music
Hi Bernth, awesome it really sounds good when you play it up to speed! So, let me see if I've got this. First use a metronome when practicing this lesson! When moving through the scale make a smooth transition to the next note, keep pick hand and fret hand synchronized, keep strict timing when playing! Start out slow and gradually increase tempo! When string skipping watch how you end on the up stroke with a slight upward tilt on the pick! And don't let the two string get the best of you. And most of all make her squeal in the end! Great lesson, I can't wait to get started! Thanks Again See you soon, but not to soon! Todd P./USA
I like this guys lessons and its been very helpful in a short period of time like he said i will be practicing excercises lile these the rest of my life and building and working always on timing accuracy and solidarity while increasing speed and getting them as perfect as possible execution is important i definitely like how he explains each lick or riff
Your channel is, for sure, the best source of knowledge that I need at this moment, I'm feeling a little stuck right now. Thank you, very, very much!!!
Love your channel, can we see some more improvising videos and slower shred solos with tabs, also maybe do a riff of the day just a small riff everyday or every two or three days. That way we can build our arsenal of licks and then that will allow us to mix and match riffs to create solos of our own, PLEASE DO THIS!!! This video is exactly what I'm talking about!!! Also (sorry so much lol) give us example solos with these three licks (with tabs) one little solo or riff for each one then combine two then all three in a short riff or solo, that way we can see it applied, thanks Bernth!!! Still leave stuff for the patrons obviously, but give us a little more in the videos!!! If you give us a taste of what being a patron includes you just might get more!!! Appreciate all that you do!!
Your channel rules man! Very well explained information, shared in a ver clean and honest(saying the steps you should follow and the work you need to improve your playing) way. Suscribed!
My difficulties with playing in general could be summed up by the very first position of the lick: the 1-3-4 fingering. My little finger wants to flex into my palm below the fretboard or into the fretboard below the string I am playing. Conversely to what Bernth says, extending my little finger away from the fretboard and importantly above the 3rd finger allows it to feel much more independence. I have the same issue on a descending C-shape arpeggio, when my ring finger plays the third on the D string, my little finger struggles to get to the root on the A string. Similarly, when playing 4-3-1, my little finger struggles to elevate off the strings, and either drags along the higher strings towards the floor, or pulls in towards my third finger. I've obviously tried to analyse what is happening, and do not know how to improve the situation, if I ever will be able to - I'm 46 - but if feels like the root of all my problems is my inability to use my 4th finger for this kind of playing.
Hello Bernth, can you make a video about guitar pedals? What kind of pedal you use in live & studio session, and how tu stack up them correctly. Thanks.😁😁
Tried this for the first time today! Felt really unusual and my and hand cramped up pretty fast. I then tried to use as little pressure as possible to fret. Is this a common feeling when getting into these types of licks?
I really like your videos, its really helpful and easy to understand. Since Ive been working out with my pinky, what pattern(s) would you recommend to strengthen it up?
Thank you BERNTH for your lessons, but I am wondering in right hand exercise. I often have no time for regulary exercise and I can not shreding fast with right hand. Everything depends on regular exercise or I have a some problem ??? )) Thank you once again
Love this channel, very helpful 🤩 What scale are we playing here? I would like to expand the 3rd practice throughout all of the strings but don't know how 🥺
Advice please: some lessons use hammer ons/pull offs, however your alternate picking everything. Is it preference or a different technique? I’m just starting but don’t understand why you would use one or the other. Please help someone
bei 4:28 verstehe ich das richtig das du alle 4 takte zwei upstrokes machst um besser im takt zu sein? aber dan wäre es ja nicht alternating picking oder wie meinst du das? liebe grüsse aus schweiz
Man it's really hard to tell which frets you're moving to without fret dots, wish we had that front on view of you playing the actual scale... good video regardless, thank you for it.

If you’re picking over 5 frets should you use your middle finger or your ring finger on the middle fret? Thanks
Should we use delay reverb or not while we do this shreding practise?

It also helps to count to 6 as Bernth points out. Then the 1 is always a downstroke.
Lick 2 broke the walls down for me trying to get my alternate picking down. The old Paul Gilbert lick. Simple, but holds all the key fundamentals
Looking at this, I'm like 'damn, I *can* learn to shred at 58!' Great lesson from a great teacher...
45 here lol.

You can use directional picking for the second lick, you can gain more speed faster
