    One thing I always loved about Guild Wars is that it basically puts the humans into the role traditionally held by the elves in more traditional high fantasy settings. Humans in GW are the magical elder race that used to rule the world but have been pushed back into just a few surviving enclaves by younger civilizations. The Charr, Asura and Sylvari are expanding, growing and developing their culture while humans are desperately struggling to hold on to past glories. Only the Norn are in a similar position as humans, having to come back from the brink of extinction.

      LoL. Humans are Isekai'd to Tyria, and granted magic by the Gods. Or look at it another way, humanity is the eldritch abomination from the far reaches of lost dimensions, now in Tyria. They even had a mind-bendingly strange and huge city in the form of the entire Orrian subcontinent, with its rings and plateaus and incomprehensible structures.

    • @gogadantes8699

      @@Kalebfenoir My fan theory is that humans arrived in Tyria from a huge space faring station managed by 6 ultra powerful AIs called Dwayna, Dhuum, Lyssa, Abaddon, Balthazar, and Melandru. The space station was facing a catastrophe that forced the AIs to use an experimental portal to transport them and the human residents to a detectable nearby hospitable planet - Tyria. But the magic intensive nature of the world transformed these already sentient and super intelligent AIs into godly beings. And this is how we find out that the humans in GW2 are actually from Earth circa 80,000 AD. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

The only thing is, if they are ever called to service by their Imperator, they MUST comply. They might not be part of the active combat roster of the Legions, but they are still Legion. Iron, Blood, and Ash Legions (the playable Charr) are unique on Tyria in that they have a deep cultural distrust of magic and religion, in a world full of magic and godlike beings. After being burned by the Flame Legion, pun intended, they reject reliance on anything they cannot build or directly control. The Charr don't pray for victory, they call for artillery and air strikes.
    Iron Legion in particular has the most advanced non-magical technology on Tyria, comparable to the late 19th - early 20th century on Earth. They invented guns, tanks, helicopters, submarines, and all manner of other war machines. They fight dragons with flak cannons, kill ghosts with artillery fire, and pioneered industrialized warfare.

    • @justusbladetooth
      @justusbladetooth ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's why I main the charr in GW2, in a world of fantasy creatures, and magic users. They turned to technology as a means of leveling the battlefield; literal and figurative. Especially once the Flame Legion got their fitting ousting.
      As someone who adores the idea of fantastic takes on historical conflict, they scratch an itch that rarely if ever does. I'm a sucker for races that break the fantasy tropes. So like you said, for a race in the setting be primed and roaring for an industrial revolution, and easily outpacing all but the Asura. It's a lovely thing to actually explore and play.

    • @icyknightmare4592
      @icyknightmare4592 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@justusbladetooth If ANet ever decides to expand the lore into the future, Tyria could go places very quickly. The combination of a high magic setting, rapid industrialization, and seemingly endless conflict (much of which is existential total war), could make the 20th Century on earth look slow.
      Assuming the Pact holds together post-EOD, explosive growth is imminent. Especially with the addition of Cantha as a peer competitor to Asuran magical technology.

    I did not ever expect guild wars lore here but I'll take IT. Should of mentioned how even when they beat Ascalon, the king casted the foefire a massive wave of magic flame I guess that basically killed most if not all the invading charr and turned all the Ascalonians into vengeful spirits that still haunt the land to the current day, attacking everyone alive, charr or human. Also they had another army that was going for the human kingdom of Orr, but the grand vizier sunk it into the ocean before they could get there, only for it to be raised centuries later by Zhaitan, the elder dragon of death that basically turned it into a massive ruined zombie kingdom.

    Due to their history, many Charr shun religion. They do not accept any god's authority and quickly anger of Charr worship or manipulation by god-like beings. Charr acknowledge other races' gods as beings of power, but do not see anything as worthy of worship. In the case of the Human Gods, the Charr view deities as beings to fight and strive to kill. At most any reverence is limited only to great heroes of Charr history and their deeds, such as Pyre Fierceshot and Kalla Scorchrazer.

    Very cool summary! I'm playing GW2 and it's great to see a Templin video on it :)
    A point that was overlooked was that worship of the Titans was opposed by a group of female charr rebels and as a result, when the Flame Legion shaman rose to power they denied female charr from being warriors anymore. This was a radical change in their society where females had fought alongside males. The revolt against the Flame Legion was led by female charr and their place in society was restored. In current times, even within the Flame Legion male and female charr are considered equals.

      The ethos of Khorne is about violence for the sake of violence, spilling blood for no other reason than to spill blood. Would you recommend Guild Wars? What's it actually like?

    • @GaldirEonai
      @GaldirEonai ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Guild Wars 2 is a fairly typical MMORPG but with some non-traditional mechanics. Outside of endgame PvE there's no sign of the traditional tank-healer-damage trinity anywhere (and they had to build it from the ground up when they added said endgame PvE) and every character is expected to bring their own healing, damage and mitigation. This on one hand makes solo adventuring very easy for basically every class but also means group PvE is often a mess with the most common strategy in dungeons being to lure all the enemies in a room into a corner and then spam whatever AoE abilities you have on them at point-blank range until either your party or the enemy are all dead.
      It does have a lot of great exploration and open-world PvE content, as well as a fairly lively PvP scene with two modes, one being open-world battles using your actual character, the other being team fights where all equipment and stats are equalized to ensure you can't grind your way into overpowered gear and then dominate newbies who haven't had the opportunity to farm for top-tier loot yet...in theory at least, in team PvP it's all about skill and teamwork, not who spent more time and gold to become OP.

    The Charr legions have one of the most interesting lore of all the playable races in GW2. I would like it if you guys covered the history and attitudes of each Charr Legion. Blood for warriors and soldiers, Iron for engineers and smiths, Ash for spies and saboteurs, and Flame for sorcerers and shamans as well as the Olmakhan Charr, the defectors of the Legions who made their own tribe and rejected to ways of the Legions by lining a non-militaristic life and mostly becoming peaceful druids.

    Couple things. The Claw of the Khan-Ur was recovered by a multi racial adventuring party lead by a human. Ascalon was originally charr territory. The humans routed them when they arrived thousands of years previous, and drove them into the blaze ridge mountains, the ancestral home of the flame legion. When they destroyed Ascalon the human king released a wave of magic that turned every human in the nation into a ghost that would attack anything that moved rendering entire sections of the country uninhabitable becoming a constant source of attrition. These problems further compounded when Kralkatorrik rose and corrupted everything his shadow fell on, splitting the nation in half and sapping the charr armies strength further. They, like every other race early on, were beset on all sides by foes that couldn't or wouldn't die. They could no longer afford a war with humanity. That being said, they are still a nation of xenophobic assholes who's ambition causes more problems than it solves.

    The Flame Legion has slowly been reintegrating into Charr society after the dead of its former leader Baelfire and promotion of Efram Greetsglory. after the defeat of the elder dragon Kralkatorrik and the ascension of the Elder Prismatic Dragon and ongoing peace treaties between the other great races of tyria has left the Charr with no real enemies to focus their war culture society on, however doing a festival and High legion peace summit the leader of the Blood Legion Bangar Ruinbringer began to secretly rally charr under xenophobic culture change from peace and fear of the peaceful Elder Prismatic Dragon being turn on them if it Champion's convince her to attack. Banger Ruinbringer would lead his rebel Charr faction calling themselves Frost Legion and later the Dominion to the Elder Dragon Jormag in hopes of subjugating it or making himself it equal as its Champion like Elder Prismatic Dragon did with her Champions leading to a new civil war between the high legions it allies and the frost legion. This plan backfired and Ruinbriger was made to Voice of Jormag its messenger and his top soilder Ryland Steelcatcher was made into Jormag Champion. Ryland with jormag using Ruinbringer to chat with the high legions and its allies to form a fragile truce to kill it rival Primordus the fire elder dragon. The truce was quickly broken when Jormag and Ryland start freezing and consuming the magic from across Tyria to boost Jormag power for the final fight with Primordus before any alternative could be found to stop both dragon from destroying each other and possible the world. IN the end Jormag and Primordus did fight and killed each other, and each of the dragon's champion were free from their influence Ryland was killed in the final battle and Bangar was serious injury from the release of jormag control and the Dominion is believed to scattered to the wind, but time will tell if these series of events will lead the charr to a better more peaceful future or continue an ongoing self-destructive cycle.

      Olmakhan Charr are a Subculture of Charr society that forgo the warlike culture of the high legion for a more peaceful tribal community. Starting as a former Charr warband that was sick of the fighting, war, and revolutions of the charr they flee to the coast of Elona the southern coastal continent of the Tyria Supercontinent landmass. They form culture more in tune with nature and family support system
