Yaaawwnnn...! Too late to promote this show's oh-so-unique cinematography, after the other aspects of this show has gone downhill. Worse.. Turns out.. The narration-less purpose of your very "channel" makes it quite a juicy case for this platform's ContentID™ scheme, to say the least.
For the confession scene, they deliberately chose a location that was brown, parched, and barren. It's meant to contrast with the green lushness of the rest of the episode in the Tuscan gardens. Brilliant.
Its not one of those shows with seemingly gorgeous visuals at first, but the cinematography is brilliant and plays a huge part in the shows story telling! also best show on tv right now.
I forget the show (for the most part) is even set in New York. It's one of the few shows shot there where you don't really see as much of it as other shows.
1:28 has to be one of the most unexpected shots i've ever seen on TV. I have no idea how they could even come up with that idea and such perfect execution, as reflections can be so tricky to work with
There's a tracking shot from season 3 that I absolutely loved. Kendall is backstage on the talk show after Shiv's letter goes public. As he walks down the hall, it focuses on his face moving from light into darkness, as his mask of happiness slips off into misery. A lot of that scene is Jeremy Strong's acting, but it's brilliantly lit and shot.
YES!!! Also! It beautifully encapsulates what Conner said in that same episode only moments previous about Logan's parenting theory: If you have two dogs fighting, you send them both off to figure out which one is the weakest. Then you punish the weak one in order to establish the hierarchy. That shot (3:20) is a visual representation of the hierarchy under Logan! Kendall is and will always be the top :')
What’s brilliant about this show is the way it captures the moment. The moment of tragedy, the moment of truth, the moment of realisation, the moment of victory. Through witty and sharp dialogues, through that banger music (which brilliantly takes advantage of the scene. Nicholas Britell created some very fine tracks), and through the frames of the camera. The camera almost captures everything in the scene. The frame reveals everything per se. And that’s why Succession is the finest show on Television. I haven’t even started on the storyline and characters. Those are on another level! Writing, music, cinematography, acting, direction, editing. God, everything is perfected (for me). Thank you Marc, for compiling some of the most compelling shots of the show!
I think that without cinematography, writing would not be fully extracted, it would be like just listening to True Detective's dialogue and not feeling that world.
At first I wondered how a show like Succession, that uses quick zooms akin to the Office got approved to shoot on 35mm film. Already it's mad to think they managed to get a green light on shooting a series on 35mm in general. (I want to meet these kind of producers). But, it's so worth it. With each episode, each new location and character arc, the visual language just got better and better. So glad I finally got in on this show.
@@henriquedelben The majority of modern-day television shows don't shoot on film period. The reason being that it's insanely expensive to shoot on film so the producers clearly had a lot of faith in Jesse Armstrong and his vision.

Succession is unique in the sense that it’s entertaining “enough” for the mainstream audience and for it to be a big hit, but it’s also incredibly artistically well made. It has everything I love in a *proper film*, but it also has mass appeal.

Something I love that the writers, directors, and cinematographers have been drilling into us across all 4 seasons- An overarching theme that’s so obvious but never ever explicitly spelled out- These people are miserable. Like, completely miserable, all the time, despite the ungodly amount of money they each control and continue to bring in. Even when something genuinely good happens to any of them- Kendall getting interim CEO, shiv getting offered the role by her dad, Tom and shiv getting engaged, etc- it’s always tainted by the fact that it’s given in an unhealthy way, or they’ve only gotten it because something horrible has happened. The only way they’ve ever dealt with problems is throwing money at them, and so they’ve never really accomplished anything fulfilling. Yet the one thing they want- approval and real love from their father- is the one thing they can’t buy with money. This show is a modern tragedy.
