I like to get a 100-300 gallon cow trough and burry it and put dirt in there with a stick sticking out and plant grass around it, I like water holes for the pre rut and rut since that's when they use them

There are still plenty of other things to implement on a property other than food plots. Water holes are great as mentioned here, but also things like early successional habit, that will also provide both food and cover for deer and other wildlife.
Don’t always need a liner. With a good clay base you can hold water all year round as long as you get some rains. Depends on soil. There is other options besides liners to like bentonite clay you can add to your soil

How did you get your water hole to actually hold the run off water? I don’t se me a liner…
