    Glenn: “I’d rather have you pissed off at me and alive than liking me and dead.”
    Scott Wilson is/was truly phenomenal. We could read all the emotions on Hershel's face as they shot the walkers. He had refused to accept that his loved ones were gone, but he knew it somewhere.
    We were hoping they'd find Sophia before the end of the season. Now we kind of wish they hadn't.
    That last scene is sending a very clear message to us (to the audience), none is safe in the group!

      Can you guys PLEASE consider reacting to the “trailer” of each season before you actually start watching it?
      I’m only asking because for seasons 3 and up
      , the trailers for each season are so hardcore and well put together and the editors always find a way to throw you off and make you think you know what’s gonna happen, and then when you actually watch it, it’s completely different.
      The trailers for each season are so cool and they give you a glimpse into how each season differs from the last. Please please please think about it.
      I would love to see your reaction to the walking dead season 3 trailer before you actually post the reaction to episode 1. And same with every season.

    "I feel like they ended the season." That's because this is the show's first mid season finale. Starting with season 2, the seasons are longer in size, and are divided into 2 halves, you guys just finished 2A and are about to start 2B which is only 6 episode long. We always had to wait months for the next part to start airing. Starting with S3 all the way till S9 every season gets 16 episodes with 8-episode halves each. The final two seasons are even longer and have 3 parts!

    You are so right about Shane being unwilling to shoot walker Sophia! Shane’s line about Rick not being built for this world is so unfounded, because he doesn’t understand that Rick sees things very similarly to how he sees them, especially the walkers. But a good leader is willing to compromise for success of the group where possible, and do the heavy lifting that nobody else wants to do.
    Hershel seeing Rick do that was so important. It means it wasn’t personal. It’s all walkers, whether known or not. Rick is truly a good leader, because he has diplomatic capability, which Shane does not have.

    During my first time watching, THIS was the episode I realized that no one is safe no matter how much plot armor they have. This scene makes me tear up every time-Carol's heartbreaking cries, Carl sobbing his heart out, a distraught and guilt-ridden Rick stepping up to put down Sophia's walker, the expressions of disbelief and shock on the faces of the others. Not to mention the emotional trauma that Hershel and his family were also experiencing. It remains to this day one of the most impactful scenes in the entire series.
    The musical score was also stellar, adding to the poignant heartbreak. Bear McCreary never disappoints. The camera work and editing were also top notch. (As was the acting, of course.)
    Something that sometimes gets overlooked is that Daryl actually saved Carol's life. If he hadn't dropped the shotgun and grabbed her, she would have run right up to her daughter and been bitten. Everyone one else was too far away and frozen in shock. He was the only one who noticed and reacted in time to stop her.
    Side note: I wouldn't say Daryl cared more about Sophia than her mother. It's just that Carol had reached the point where she'd finally lost hope, and she didn't want to be responsible for Daryl risking his life and possibly dying for no reason. But then, as you pointed out, he rekindled her hope (something he probably regrets now, in hindsight), which then made it even worse when Walker Sophia came out of the barn.
    You may know by now, but this episode was actually the mid-season finale, so audiences who watched it in real time had to wait several months for the next episode.

The mother got COVID and due to her age, having difficulty breathing, and needing to be isolated in ICU, I assumed she would be gone soon. My friend gave frequent updates, letting us know when days were better or worse, that they got to chat on facetime, that they were grateful for all the people sending their best wishes. Everything felt so positive and it gave me hope to the point I expected her to get better. That did not happen...and when she died, it definitely hurt more than it would have if her death were expected. In a way, I wish I did not have the hope that built up...

    I've been holding my breath for the reaction to this episode. It had been difficult to not talk about it!!! Finding Sophia as a walker isn't the ending we wanted but it was important for Hershel and his family to witness the group's loss so they could all have the same experience and understand and sympathize with each other. This was the only way everyone on the farm could be unified.

Rob, you get the difference b/t Rick & Shane right away. This episode solidified Rick as the leader for me. Anybody can stir up shit like Shane, with aggression & muscle, but it takes a different type of strength to work through difficult decisions with thought & balance, in the face of danger, tension, etc.

    This episode aired a month after my daughter passed at 11 1/2 years old. She had similar build to Sofia and her hair was the same. As you can imagine this episode hit me hard. But also in a way it was like ripping off a Band-Aid it hurts but its hurts less than facing it slowly. Now for my thoughts on Shane at this stage, I think Shane is what you get when you mix Love with Selfishness. Shane want's Lori and Carl no matter what they want. Everything driving his actions is jealousy and rage because he can't have her.

    The Walking Dead is based off of a long running comic. This was the episode where the comic and the show split. The show still followed the outline in the comics,. In the comics, Sophia never died and she lived to be an adult and have a child of her own. One of the other splits from the comic is with Hershal Green and his family. In the comics, he had like seven or eight children, the youngest being around Carl and Sohpias age.

    I’m surprised no one is teasing the next episode, this is a stellar episode but gosh dang the next one is one of my favourites! You get even more epic Rick glaring. Also I feel the silence/inaction at the end of the episode resonates so hard throughout the group, even Shane who called Sophia out as gone had nothing to say, nothing he could do when she was there. I mean at the very least you’d expect something like him taking solace in being right but no the only person capable of doing what is necessary in this moment is Rick and it’s one of my favourite scenes of his!

    I honestly think the main reason Daryl got so invested in Sophia and Carol was because of that story he told Andrea-no one looked for him when he went missing, so when another kid went missing and her mom and everyone were frantic, it got to him emotionally.
    I also think that’s why he blew up at her when she seemed to give up.
    But yeah that scene is such a turning point, damn iconic

    Another great reaction to this great show. This episode is so full of emotions, more dilemmas where everyone has so many reasons to defend their interests or collective interests. While some act deliberately to please, respect and try to stay on good terms with Hershel, like Rick, others use untimeliness with a certain reason too, like Shane. Hershel didn't believe in death, but he thought it was something reversible with regard to zombies, it was difficult for him to disconnect from this attachment and understand something almost supernatural in front of him. And finally, Sophia. I confess that it was a plot twist that caught me, and moved me at the same time.

    I think what’s so impactful about 15:06 is that morning Hershel and his family woke up still having hope that the world would be fixed, that their family could be healed. They all probably knew in their hearts that at least their loved ones wouldn’t come back. But society was still disciplined. It still existed. It was going to be fine. And then….. he was thrown into reality.

    I was waiting to see your take on this episode. It was so heartbreaking the first time I saw it. I always felt like Shane lost it so much because he was already angry about Laurie telling him he'll never be the father. It was a way for him to get back at her and Rick. Carol's reaction is just gut wrenching. I love the actress Melissa McBride. She is so fantastic in this show and just gets better and better.

    You knew instantly that Rick was going to have to shoot Sophia, but there's a deeper reason for why you knew (other than knowing Shane wasn't able to do it). The first scene you ever see in The Walking Dead is Rick shooting a little girl who became a walker, which foreshadows and preps you mentally for Rick & Sophia's scene. It might have not been intentional foreshadowing from the writers, as Madison Lintz withdrew unexpectedly, but it's still brilliant that the writers wove that moment back in. Love your reactions!

    I was REALLY excited for this episode. It's been slow for several episodes and then this one's like BAM! I've heard it argued that this episode is the most important episode in the entire series. As crazy as you think Shane is, that speech, and finding Sophia in there, was important for everyone to hear and see. It woke them up to the reality of the world they're living in. Everyone was trying to emulate life before the apocalypse, but that's not how it is anymore, and thinking it is will get them killed. You may think Shane has lost it, but he's actually just ahead of the curve. He knows how you have to be now, and he needs everyone else to get there.

    • @TheEnigmafan25
      @TheEnigmafan25 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually Shane's way will get you killed as well. You have to think before you do things. Not just act on it. Rick thinks before doing. He thinks of the future. That's how it needs to be. You think of the shelter for future food ammo and the people in yur group. Especially yur family. Lori and Carl are not Shane's responsibility. He needs to back off. Just be the friend the uncle figure. You got to have balance in this world. Not to much of one way or the other. Going to much either way gets you killed. You have to have a balance of both. And think ahead.

    • @michaelbugner7011
      @michaelbugner7011 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheEnigmafan25 im talking about recognizing how the world is and doing what needs to be done. No matter how ugly it is. Things you'd say you'd never do before are things you'll have to do now. I'm trying not to say anything spoilery, but just think ahead to Rick and the group and the things they do.

    • @TheEnigmafan25
      @TheEnigmafan25 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelbugner7011 I didn't say I wouldn't do them. I said both ways to far either way gets you killed. If you don't have balance. You will be nothing but an animal. No morals for anyone around you that yur in control of keeping them all safe and alive. Being touch either way will get all of them killed. You have to think for the future and have balance in keeping some humanity and doing what needs to be done. How is that in anyway saying I won't do some things now that are wrong not do them then. It's not.

    • @michaelbugner7011
      @michaelbugner7011 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheEnigmafan25 I'm not saying you wouldn't do things or one way is completely right. I'm saying Shane and this incident woke them up to what the world is now and that you have to fight to survive. They thought the farm was safe, it isn't. They thought they could live life like they did before. But they can't. They see now that the world is cruel and ugly. The next event that happens also facilitates this debate. I think Shane is wrong for what he wants to do. But if you look ahead further in the series, Rick does something really similar.

  • @absolutelycurtains6965
    @absolutelycurtains6965 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is my favourite episode of the show. Periodt.
    From the first scene onwards you are completely hooked. Tensions are already strong in the first few minutes of the episode. Shane and Daryl nearly get into a fight when the intro hasn't even started yet. And after that it just never calms down, it's just 40 thrilling minutes of rising tension, of character growth and one great speech after another.
    Carol expressing doubt over whether her daughter is still really out there towards Daryl, angering the latter after he was the only one who spent every day looking for her. Them reconciling later. Dale warning Andrea about Shane, because he was still the first person to realise how messed up that guy has gotten.
    The conflict between Rick and Hershel.
    Rick and Shane.
    Maggie and Hershel.
    Glenn and Maggie, leading of course to Glenn's amazing speech.
    Lori telling Shane that even if he's the biological father, the child will never be his.
    Shane's steady decline over the course of the episode. The conflict between him and Dale, who then provides us with yet another one of his truly inspiring monologues.
    And at this point, we haven't even reached the best part yet. From the minute onwards where Shane arrives at the farm with the guns, the ending of this episode keeps having me on the edge of my seat every single time I watch it. I don't think I have to go through every single thing that happened there, but every second was simply perfect.
    It is also worth noting that, like you said, Rick was the one who ultimately had to clean up after the mess Shane made. Him shooting Sophia is not only that, but it sets up the different roles of Rick and Shane within the group perfectly. Shane depicts himself as the big guy, but most of all he lashes out. Taking out his frustration on everyone, breaking all of Hershel's rules no matter the potential consequences for the group, freeing a whole bunch of walkers to kill them. Of course he was right about the walker situation, but like you pointed out, it's his presentation that shows what kind of person he is.
    In the end however, it was Rick who took responsibility by taking Sophia out. Not only because he felt guilty. It also shows true leadership. Something we don't see from Shane.
    This episode marks an important turning point in the show. On one hand, it ends the lengthy style of the previous episodes, especially the previous three, which focused mostly on dialogue and character development. From this episode on, season 2 gets a whole new atmosphere. The second half of the season is absolutely amazing.
    On the other hand though, and that's the important part, Sophia's death changes everything. Up until this point, despite being a show about the literal end of the world, The Walking Dead hasn't killed many important characters. Sure, we had Amy, which was sad because we saw what Andrea went through afterwards. We had Jim, which was all in all pretty a pretty heartbreaking death. We had Jacqui and Dr Jenner at the end of season 1, and then of course we had Otis who was killed by Shane. But let's face it: We didn't really care much for any of these characters. Sure, a few tears here and there, but we got over it rather quickly. Nothing really important so far.
    Sophia's death is different. And for various reasons.
    First of all, Sophia is a child. That's insane. Many shows, no matter how brutal they might be, seem to collectively agree on children as a line they won't cross. With killing Sophia, who was not only some kid but also a named character and one we kinda cared for a little, The Walking Dead shows us that it can in fact cross the line. And that it will.
    Second of all, though we don't really care much more for Sophia than we did for the previous victims, we care a lot for Carol. That's the part that makes this death so much more tragic to us as viewers than the one's we've been through at this point.
    And lastly, we spent half a season looking for this girl. We had our hopes up, even in the darkest of moments. When we all knew how unlikely it was for Sophia to still be alive at this point, we still didn't want to admit it to ourselves. When Daryl found her doll, we allowed ourselves to be optimistic again. This episode in particular wasn't about the search for Sophia. That's what makes her death sudden and unexpected. And the reveal that this entire time she was not only dead, but stuck in this barn only metres away from the group, was absolutely brutal.
    Sophia's death changes the entire show because it sets up entirely new rules about what we can expect from it. This is the first death that proved to us viewers that The Walking Dead will be merciless.
    Jon Bernthal truly shines in this episode. So do Scott Wilson, Lauren Cohan and Melissa McBride. This is my favourite episode. And this is the point where it's starting to get REALLY good.

    So far Shane showed he was unraveling when:
    1. Otis was murdered
    2. Shane stating Hershel will just have to understand (as if he has the right to give an opinion on someone else's property, about whether they stay or not.
    There's a few more issues coming...

    If you think Sophia's death was a highlight, then wait for season 3. And if you think it can't get any worse, then keep waiting. The show knows how to tear hearts apart.
    You'll notice Shane is just ahead of his time here, ahead of everyone's time. Shane is actually the most important character of the entire series.

    I will never forget when I first saw this episode when it first aired on TV my jaw dropped when Sophia walked out of the barn as a walker. It was the talk of the town at that time. Then years later after I met my wife and we got engaged than married and then when we moved in together in early 2020. That’s when all the lockdowns began so we had so much time to sit down and I told her let’s watch The Walking Dead, and she didn’t want to at first, but finally I was able to convince her. And when we got to this episode, I was able to see her reaction and how her jaw dropped as well and I want to see it again with you guys for the first time it’s still gets to me.
